The Tesla Powertrain

In Tesla’s advanced electric powertrain, the accelerator pedal commands the inverter to extract DC power from the battery for delivery to the AC induction motor. The motor generates up to 415 Nm of torque that powers the rear wheels by way of a fixed gear reduction. Arranging the drive inverter, motor, and single-
speed gearbox in one tight package achieves unprecedented efficiencies in conductivity and thermal management.
The powertrain, tucked between the rear wheels, uses energy three times more efficiently than a gas-burning engine.
Acceleration
Instant GoUnlike the internal combustion engine with hundreds of moving pieces that spark, pump, belch, and groan, the Tesla motor has only one moving piece: the rotor. As a result, Model S acceleration is instantaneous, like flipping a switch. Hit the accelerator. In 5.6 seconds Model S is traveling 60 miles per hour, without hesitation and without a drop of gasoline.
Driving Dynamics
Agility and GraceThe Model S suspension system was developed for the unique architecture of Model S. It works in harmony with the rigid and light Tesla platform to provide precision handling and optimum comfort. Unencumbered by an engine, the lightweight front suspension optimizes wheel control. The rear multi-link suspension is designed to seamlessly integrate with the powertrain.
Air SuspensionThe optional air suspension automatically responds to speed and road conditions. As Model S accelerates, it lowers the vehicle for optimized aerodynamics and handling. Lower or raise Model S using the touchscreen to unload cargo when parked.
Power SteeringElectronic Power Steering automatically reacts to driving conditions to stay comfortable and responsive at all speeds. The feedback is so precise, you'll feel constantly connected to the road.
Model S sets the bar for electric driving range. Each of the three battery options achieve unprecedented range, the largest delivering 300 miles per charge. Tesla starts with about seven thousand automotive-grade Lithium-ion cells and assembles them into a liquid-cooled battery strategically positioned in the floor of the car. The Model S battery builds on the Tesla Roadster’s pioneering architecture and more than 15 million miles of real world driving.
Far, Farther, Farthest: Model S has three battery range options. The 160 mile battery is standard.
The battery pack does more than store energy. Its structure and position contribute to ride, handling, and aerodynamics.
Charging
Plug In AnywhereModel S comes standard with everything you need to plug into the most common 240-volt outlet, standard 120-volt wall outlets and public stations. Using a high-amperage 240-volt outlet, Model S can be recharged at the rate of 62 miles range per hour. A fifty-percent charge in thirty minutes can be achieved with a Tesla Supercharger.
Ask Tesla owners how long it takes to charge and they'll say just a few moments. Like they do with a cell phone, most Tesla owners plug in at night. By morning, their battery is completely recharged. The touchscreen can be used to create a customized charging schedule that enables you to charge when electricity rates are lower during off-peak hours.

Panoramic Roof
LET THE LIGHT INWhen closed, the panoramic roof appears as a single sheet of lightweight glass, contributing to the unique, streamlined physique of Model S. With one simple swipe on the touchscreen, it opens wide to provide a “top-down” drive experience.
The roof’s infrared coating reduces solar load to 20 percent, making the panoramic roof an option
for owners in all climates.
Charge Port
HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHTScan the streamlined body panels and you’ll discover that Model S lacks a fuel door. Approach the driver’s side taillight holding a connector, press the button, and something surprising happens: a triangle opens to reveal a small charge port. The connectors enable, from one Tesla-designed port, rapid charging as well as charging from 240 volt and 120 volt outlets.
The Key

Know where you’re going, hands free. The touchscreen displays maps in stunning high-resolution detail. Visualize your location in either map or satellite view and overlay weather, traffic, and charging information. For paramount safety, directions are displayed within the instrument cluster to keep the route details within your line of sight.
The world is at your fingertips. With built-in high-speed connectivity, you’ll never be without quick access to restaurant reviews, movie times and other information you spontaneously need on the go.
Model S is in your complete control. The most common controls like temperature and volume are located along the bottom of the screen. Other controls including lights, door locks, and the panoramic roof are easily accessible. The panoramic roof, for example, opens by simply swiping to the opening size you prefer.

Seating
The rear facing child seat option provides seating for seven. Optimized for safety and equipped with 5-point seatbelts, the bucket seats provide a comfortable ride for children under the age of 10. When not in use, the jump seats fold completely flat.
