The excitement is really starting to build as we count down the days to our first Model S deliveries. We are ahead of schedule and can’t wait to put our first Reservation Holders behind the wheel! We’ve been looking forward to this day for over three years, and the buzz around the office and the factory is escalating every day.
FIRST DELIVERIES SCHEDULED!
The Tesla Factory will begin customer deliveries on June 22nd!!! We have a great day planned for our employees to celebrate this incredible event and will be webcasting the actual delivery ceremony on teslamotors.com. My heart is racing just thinking about it!
I find myself spending more and more time at the factory lately as we prepare to deliver our first cars. As I walk alongside the assembly line, past the paint booths and through the Plastics Center, I think there are lots of interesting activities going on that you might like to see. I am amazed at how fast our robots can position major sections of the car and how quickly our massive presses can transform huge rolls of aluminum into doors, hoods and battery enclosures.
Several weeks ago I challenged the teams at Deer Creek and Fremont to find a way to share some of these cool activities with our friends and family around the world. I’m happy to say they have met the challenge. Starting with this post, we officially begin a new series called “Inside Tesla.” Every Tuesday from now through the start of Model S deliveries we are going to post a blog with a new video and a collection of images highlighting a segment of the Model S manufacturing process. Be on the lookout, we might also have a few surprises to share along the way :).
EVENTS AND STORE OPENINGS
We will continue to hold Model S events in other areas during the countdown to June 22nd. A few weeks ago we held our “Signature - Four Color” event at Tesla Fashion Island in Newport Beach, California. It was the second time we had four Model S Beta cars, in all four Signature colors, on display at a Tesla Retail Store. It was great! Many thanks to the 9,000 visitors who stopped by to see us throughout the weekend. Given the energy and excitement surrounding these types of events, we thought it would be fun to create an Event Gallery on teslamotors.com to share some of our favorite photos and videos. Check it out and let us know what you think!

One of the most frequent comments I hear at events is “You always do everything on the West Coast. How about doing something on the East Coast?” So, East Coast here we come! This weekend we open our first “new design” store on the East Coast at The Westchester in White Plains, New York. We are bringing four Betas to the opening. This is the first time the “Signature - Four Color” event will be on the East Coast and the first time we’ve assembled four Model S Beta cars at a store opening. I’m looking forward to seeing many of you at the opening.
We haven’t forgotten about our fans north of the border. Last week we launched a five-city Model S Beta tour through Canada. After first stopping in Ottawa and Laval, Quebec, the Signature Red Model S Beta will take up temporary residence in Etobicoke, Ontario this week before moving on to Calgary and Vancouver in June. We hope to see you along the way!
MODEL S UPDATES
I’d like to share a few Model S updates that again underscore how personalized YOUR Model S can be. Model S can be adjusted exactly the way YOU like it.
Regen(erative) braking
One of the engineering advantages that make an EV better than any gas-powered car is regenerative braking. When you take your foot off the Model S accelerator, energy is fed back into the battery, which causes the car to slow down (a similar feel to downshifting with a manual transmission). One of our Firmware engineers wrote a great blog about this technology shortly after the release of our Tesla Roadster. Over the past few years, we have learned that not everyone likes the same amount of Regen. Some owners like a little more resistance, some like a little less. Having less Regen means you will likely get less range, but some people still prefer the feel of their car with less Regen. We listened to your requests and I’m pleased to announce that Model S Regen will be adjustable. You can adjust Regen to suit your driving style.

Adjustable Steering
One of the many benefits of driving a Tesla is that almost everything can be adjusted. Even the steering on Model S is adjustable, which allows you to change the resistance required to turn the steering wheel. You’ll be able to choose between Comfort, Standard, and Sport steering.
Personalize your Suspension
As you can see, we’re developing a theme here – personalization. At Tesla, we are thinking differently about the way you connect with your car. Every Tesla customer is different, so we thought everyone should have the option to set his or her preference for suspension and ride height. With Active Air Suspension, a car set a little lower to the ground will reduce aero drag. You may choose to raise the suspension a few inches when faced with pesky speed bumps or very high when loading up the Frunk with groceries and supplies for a summer BBQ.
Range Testing
I’m thrilled to report that range & efficiency testing has been completed on our 85 kWh Model S. We’ve exceeded expectations. Elon and JB just posted a blog explaining recent changes to EPA testing procedures and how they relate to Model S. It’s definitely worth checking out. I think it answers a lot of questions about EV range and efficiency.
These are very exciting times at Tesla and we’re looking forward to sharing them with each and every one of you as we countdown to June 22nd. We can’t wait to make every new owner smile as they jump behind the wheel of the most personalized and fun driving experience they’ve ever had. Be sure to check out “Inside Tesla” every Tuesday and don’t forget to follow us on Facebook and Twitter for the latest updates and news. See you this weekend, East Coast.
Let the countdown begin!!!

Tesla employees celebrate the first customer Model S body
This blog has been updated on May 24, 2012.

A little note for George Blankenship (similarly posted on Facebook without response). From a Tesla enthusiast (I put my deposit down almost 2 years ago!!!)
1. Reservation holders were told we would have opportunities for test drives of the Beta's at dealers in April-May 2012. This obviously has not happened. A call to Tesla 5/8/12 was NOT very enlightening. The best answer given was, "you can defer your reservation." Are you kidding me? I put $40,000.00 down and the answer I get is defer my reservation. NOT IMPRESSED.
2. Interior Center Console. I do NOT like the open center console area. On my 5/8/12 conversation with Tesla, the response I got was Tesla wanted to show off the volume of area in the Model S. This is a shining example of theory and practice. We, in the real world, have to put things somewhere and preferably out of sight. There's nothing like getting a vehicle with a glass roof and expect to leave anything of value in plain view just to have someone break a window. Of course, I will be glad I have all that useless room in the center console area that serves NO purpose whatsoever other than to impress and engineer.
3. Fine details: Still waiting for an update on this delivery process and if it comes at a premium. 4G? Fees, costs? Will the Wi-Fi connect to mobile hotspots on smartphones avoiding extra data plans?
While all the hype is well deserved (and I am excited), Tesla needs to nail down - what are - a few common sense issues.

Awesome! Can't wait to drive one!
George - I must say, I'm blown away! I really appreciate how Tesla Motors is keeping the reservation holders updated on it's progress with the Model S. This is an exciting time. History books will record all of your successes. I am looking forward to taking delivery of my Model S (85Kwh) this Fall. Keep up the good work.

Now we need Canadian pricing and a date for first deliveries...
Gongrat! This is really great news (and on the day of the succsefful SpaceX launch!). You also have a large group of enthusiasts in Europe - any news about when the first Signatures will be delivered to Europe?
Great pic! and looking forward to the Tuesday updates!
Patience will not be bitter :-)
I'm not gonna survive the next month. I don't even have a reservation and the suspense is STILL killing me :P
Who will get the first model!
The steering should have an "auto" mode also making it speed sensitive. More resistance at higher speeds and low resistance for parking etc. It would be just a software change!
Looking good folks!! As usual, exceeding expectations.
Congratulations to all the Tesla Motors team on all the achievements, and on the latest 5-star crash rating! Can't wait until we get some test-drive cars into the showrooms.
Love the personalization ideas. What other treats are you going to announce before we take delivery?
Keep up the great work!
Congrats to everyone at Tesla! Big moment for Telsa and you should all be proud. The Model S will be amazing.
Keep up the good work. Any idea on Canadian pricing yet?
Exciting news on my birthday!!!!
When are we ever going to get a change to test drive one of these? I sent my deposit in over three years ago, but I have a hard time buying a car solely on faith.
Thanks for the information and update. Can't wait to get my hands on the Model S.
Hi:
Happy to see that your sharing more activities with your loyal reservist. We can't wait to get our Model S!! Could you comment on what if any problems there are about keeping the battery system properly charged. I saw on some blog about problems with the battery pack after they where drained completely and not recharged immediately. You never know if these stories are true or someone that has an axe to grind with Tesla.
Dan
Congratulations to all at TESLA! Looking forward to the S...!
I am number 55 on the list. I was number 24 but I was told that there were cars designated for some of the insiders which is fine. I was just wondering what is the estimated delivery date of my vehicle.

As a reservation holder, will we be contacted by Tesla asking us to pick colors, trim, etc. when its time
I enjoyed the Newport Beach event. The employees are way more informed now than they were months ago.
Can't wait to be able to configure my car! If Mr. Musk can launch into Space, I have faith the car is going to be awesome!
Sweet! Looking forward to receiving #849.
This is really great news! Congratulations to the Tesla team. Looking forward to learn about the first impressions from the first owners soon.
Great news!one question, when can i expect the signature in the netherlands?
Very exciting...I'm still, I guess, a year away (P8901) from getting mine (a good thing, I need to save up), but since watching the Revenge documentary, then learning all about Tesla, I'm sold on the concept. I think the key to mass adoption is to build a car people desire; the fact it's electric, in terms of sales, is academic. I think the S, and eventually the X, do exactly that, great cars, great features, and having compared to other ICE cars in the same bracket, equivalent price.
well done, until now you got 6 start in all categories from me :) - looking forward to next tuesday, cant wait until we see it in europe - please send color samlpes, exterior/interior samples to the stores so we can see the actual colors/fabrics
I drove down from Santa Barbara to participate in the Newport event. I found every interaction, both tech and human, exceptionally accommodating and informative! I am #383 on your list and cleared up all the questions rattling around in my brain...
VERY IMPRESSIVE!
I was assured that the decorative carbon fiber spoiler could be avoided if requested. Please consider it so for me!
I enjoy breakfast at the same place nearly every day. Recently, I met a man there who I think Elon Musk, or a well-versed electrical engineer on the Tesla team, should interview this individual regarding some of the innovations he has installed on his personal prototype electric vehicles. He has four of them. I found him to be very well informed and absolutely dedicated to his logic. I know from experience that most innovator/inventor types would do just about anything to advance their projects but this guy had an extra spark....
Sincerely,
#383
I've been following Tesla Motors from the beginning and I love the company and the cars. Superb engineering and craftsmanship. My middle name is Tesla and if it were in my budget I'd buy a Model S in a heartbeat! For now I'll have to get by with a key chain and coffee cup.
Is there a Tesla dealer/store in the Dallas, TX area?
Great! It's about time to start sharing. I know you're super busy and excited. But as are we the early movers that make the investment :-) Keep pushing and keep us posted!
PS: need to work on your sharing strategy. Login? really? It's 2012 and not 2001 :-)
The features that are adjustable sound great. Will all those (and more) be part of the User Profile? Meaning, will there be "Driver 1 and Driver 2" buttons for seat adjustment, Mirrors, Steering Regen ect?
Looking forward the hearing feedback from new owners. I'll be hoping to get mine towards year end of early 2013.
Great stuff. A family member owns a Camry hybrid and it's obvious how much of the hybrid and EV experience could be improved with some basic adjustability. Yet another trail Tesla is blazing. Can't wait for this fall when my S is ready.
Some clarity on delivery schedule for reservation holder would be great. I have been told to expect my car this year but so far there has not been any communication about this.
Great news!!! I can't wait to hear from the new owners and get their input. Being from the Northeast I have questions about heating the car's interior, cold weather, how an eletric drivetrain works in snow & icy weather and how good batteries hold charges in cold weather. So you can see how much I need to hear good news because I want a Tesla. Then I want to thumb my nose at big oil. Good luck and great job!!! Ed PS. I do own stock in our company so it's not just the car.
Congratulations! Great car and good day for beginning, I know, that is my birthday too!
Great news!
One question though - for "Personalize your Suspension" - does that only apply to cars equipped with the Air suspension option?
Congratulations to all the team members for the excellent job. This car is the beginning of a new category of electric cars. Hopefully it will be a great success.
You, the company and the workers, are writing a new episode of the automobile history.

Great news on the customization! Speaking of customization, will there be an option for heated seats and/or steering wheel? The steering wheel especially is nice in the colder climates!
I've already sent an email about this and gotten an ambiguous answer, but when are the test drives for people with reservations? I am order #7739 and am expecting delivery next March. When I signed the reservation, I was notified that there would a test drive sometime in summer if we had reserved. I am booking my summer vacations right now and would like to know when the approximate date for the Pacific Northwest test drive so that I can book accordingly. Thanks!
Mr. Malibu should be the official Tesla spokesperson.. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Mr-Malibu-Fan-Page/218979679989
Way to go Tesla Motors!!!! For a company to take an idea and turn into reality is impressive but you (TM) have gone far an above your vision of an electric car.
The Model S embodies the performance of a Roadster and delivers it in such a well thought out manner. The Model S is not a beautiful car but its stunning!!! Thanks for the birthday gift.
So excited. I work in Palo Alto, California, one block from the Tesla Headquaters. I see the Tesla employees driving around in the Model S all the time. They look amazing!! Can't wait to take delivery of mine, and get on the road.
When do we get to test-drive the car and have an approximate delivery date? I reserved a car 4 (FOUR) years ago and upgraded to a Signature. Tesla has a lot of my money, so I'd like to test drive it, pick out the way I want it, and get a date by which I should have it.
Richard Zitrin
From now on Tesla Tuesday is the day of the week to look out for!
It would be nice to have a clear answer to when reservation holders will get a test drive especially since we were supposed to be doing this some time ago.
I have to agree with SteveNR - I put my reservation in quite some time ago & I have yet to be contacted about putting in my color preferences, upgrades, options, etc. I would also like to drive a car before I spend almost $100K.
I was surprised to find that I have received better response and concern from Toyota for a $500 deposit on a Prius than from the Tesla corp. regarding this car.
So how many reservation holders have gotten "THE CALL"?
Can't wait!!! If I order one in Hong Kong now (May, 2012), when can I expect the delivery?!
Response to emarcotti:
I have questions about heating the car's interior, cold weather, how an eletric drivetrain works in snow & icy weather and how good batteries hold charges in cold weather.
My Roadster experience: seat heaters work well, as does heater. Fabulous traction on snow and ice (I park my Jag when it snows, and it also purports to have traction control) -- not much for deep snow of course, but stunningly good traction on snow and ice. batteries have a fuild to protect from extremes of heat and cold, so you lose some charge to run the fluid (keep car plugged in when parked), and charge seems to hold well. Vehicles are well thought-out, well dsigned, and well engineered. Do not fear snow or cold....
A couple of things:
@DMETZLER
(1)I am in the Dallas area, and there are no stores in Dallas. In fact, it is illegal to have a store in the state of Texas as Texas law prevents a manufacturer for owning a dealership in the state. What you will have, is the places like the Galleria in Houston having a display store, but they are forbidden to take orders, discuss pricing, or actually sell the car. There will be a Dallas service location once the launch has occurred, but there will be no sales locations.
(2) I have seen the Beta in Houston and understand many of the concerns here, in terms of test driving, etc. I also understand the needs for many to actually hands-on discover if their model-s will be akin to their BMW-5 or their E-class. I too, am curious. However, the main crux here is the technology. I am absolutely certain that this is not going to have the feel or drive of a Chrysler 300 or a Chevy Cruze (no offense to those marquee vehicles - simply a comparison) but I am also optimistic that it will rival the aforementioned Euro models. I am satisfied that the interior is unique and comfortable. I am driving a pickup now (just the way things worked out here in Texas) and the difference in being 6 feet off the ground and 4 feet is going to be a bit of a change. But it "is" very comfortable.
(3) Also, we should keep in mind that this is more of a rolling technology than a rolling vehicle. Sure, it is going to be taxed tagged and titled as a car, but it truly is a different animal altogether. You cannot drive to El Paso with it (from Dallas) as you can my Pickup, you cannot tow a boat (or really should consider that plan and its sanity prior to trying) and you shouldn't be tossing mulch in the boot. Again, it's just not that kind of vehicle. It is a commuter device and a hotspot and a regenerative braking system and has 6000+ Dewalt-type batteries in it, etc. etc.
Finally, I have picked out my color, wheels, interior, and accessories (getting the third row seat for my wife's kids, getting the tech package for my wife's husband, and the middle range battery - don't need any bigger) and have been constantly in touch with my Ownership Experience Advocate in Palo Alto almost weekly.
This is none other than exciting, and am waiting to have them deliver it to my door as part of their ownership experience plan. Oh, and I am planning to have a delivery party this fall when it arrives.
Regards

Greetings from your no. 1 Aussie ticket holder. Great news about the USA delivery schedule. Has work on the right hand drive version commenced? Are you planning on delivering to all right hand drive countries around the same time? What is the Australian ETA?
The customization options are excellent! I would like to add support to one of the earlier comments re speed sensitive steering. I have it on my 5 series BMW - small steering wheel turn at slow speeds equals bigger wheel turn and the opposite at high speeds - and it is a wonderful innovation.
Keep up the great work guys. Please provide pricing and delivery data for your reservation holders in the antipodes as soon as you can.
It would be nice if you could give reservation estimates.
Perhaps something like 1-100 by June 30.
101-200 by July 15, etc.
I am #203 and my paperwork says September. I was told that Tesla didn't want to disappoint by not meeting a date, but a more realistic estimate (that you hope to meet) would be better. We've waited this long, and if you gave a real expected delivery date, and then missed by a week or two, I think we would understand. It would also help us plan!
This is great but when do we get to test drive, pick out exactly what we want, and hear from our Tesla rep about timing? I reserved a car four years ago, and now I'm up for a Signature, so it's understandable that I'd like to know what your schedule is for ME, and hear from you folks about that.
Thanks.
Richard Zitrin
Hi George,
Great blog entry! I look forward to the Tuesday updates.
Now that Elon has announced on twitter than the crash testing is complete, perhaps in one of your updates you can discuss this in more detail. I would be interested in learning whether 5-star ratings were achieved in all categories.
Larry
Very nice...Now we need Europe pricing and a date for first deliveries...
Thanks for the update!
@STEVENR - I couldn't agree more. There are couple of things bother me too besides what you pointed out:
1. Is that I am looking to get the black exterior with black leather interior; however, seeing the beta prototype in DC - I was told the headliner only comes in tan. This is ridiculous that you can't choose gray or black or some other darker color. The beta prototype I saw in DC probably had many people go through it because it clearly showed dirt/stains in the tan headliner that covers the entire top, and perimeter of the doors/windows.
2. The other issue was the chrome accents (interior door handle/rear trunk floor pad) on the car felt cheap - it was more of a plastic-like and showed way too many finger prints. I know these maybe nothing to many and I am being picky; however, for a luxury type car - the amount we are paying for it - it just seems that they did cut corners on things that most cars have down.
I really hope that they will have these resolved - but doubt it since it is already in production as is. I am #8460 so maybe by next year they might.
TL;DR - The headliner is only in tan and chrome accents seem cheap/plastic-like.
RE: WiFi
-> It is my understanding (after discussing this option with my Ownership Experience Advocate and the individuals at the Houston showroom) that you have the option of using a dongle-type adapter - like a verizon or AT&T brand - and stick it in one of the four USB ports in the car to power it. Your car becomes an instant hotspot. It is also my understanding that you may attach an iPhone and activate its personal hotspot function to act as the wireless receiver. Whether data will stream down the wire into the USB port or will be accessible via wi-fi (which again, makes your device a mobile hotspot) was unclear.
What was clear to me, is that the actual touch screen will NOT be able to duplicate the iPhone touch screen (as a remote screen) - which would be pretty sweet, considering all the trouble I (and many of you) have gone through to make my iPhone tailored to my needs.
WJ
Regeneration during coast: Glad to hear it, could not agree more. Needs to be like coasting in an old IC Engine vehicle. When your foot is on the brake (at least lightly) you should regen then.
Adjustable Steering: The resistance turning the steering wheel should be proportional to the current/power in the electric power steering directing the wheels. A step steering resistance change (regardless of wheel EPS power/torque) isn't going to be like a hydraulic setup (power assist). It would take a bit of fiddling to get it right. Keep up the good work!

I live in Arizona, you never want black seats or leather seats in the summer heat here. An option for cloth seats which are NOT black is necessary.
Hi,
I'm #3248 and plan on getting the full monte 300mile performance with all the trimmings.. (been saving my pennies).. basically everything except the rear passenger seats.
As I believe Tesla plans to build the 300mile cars first, how will the orders be filed if those in the queue before me want a smaller battery?
upgrade or interchange from a 160 to a 230 or 300 battery if desire?
Now, when can we expect RIGHT HAND DRIVE vehicles? Specifically, landed here in Australia. Our local rep said that a Tesla store was opening in the Spring (your Autumn).
I second the request for a centre console for security if for no other reason. The empty space is otherwise wasted.
Otherwise, the news is exciting and i can't wait to get my hands on my sig #9, Australia!!!
It is wonderful that delivery of Model S is ahead of schedule, and now even projected range is improved. However, I think the lack of communication regarding delay of test drives is inconsistent with Tesla's stated goals of "ownership experience." Reservation holders have shown they are serious by providing a deposit, and I think all that is expected from everyone is information.
Whatever the reason for delay, it is the silence on this that makes it worse, and it is time for Tesla to acknowledge and unapologetically own it.
regards,
Cameron Jordan
Greetings,
I continue to receive differing dates on potential deliveries from the Newport Beach team...my reservation number is RN143207 and I am sequence number 5850....can you give me a realistic delivery date to plan towards ?
Warmest thanks,
Jim Quandt
I am the owner of serial #0000000001, as well as Roadster #00000016!
I'm so excited and delighted with everything Tesla does. I have 100% faith they will get any an all issues worked out and delight us--like they did with the Roadster.
George above: don't worry about the small details like the 4G or center console..... think big: Elon and his team are providing all of us with the future.... today!
Congrats to the team!!!
@jason calacanis!
when will trest drives become possible?
is leasing an option?
JH
Many higher end cars now come with option of ventilated as well as heated seats. Would love it if the Model S has a cooled seat option, sure makes driving in Hot-Atlanta more comfortable. Oh yes, when can we expect a showroom/ store here?
I'm preparing my garage for TESLA.

Hey!
Its late pm in Europe already!
Where's the Tuesday post?
Think global!
I have to say IMHO there is some Koolaid drinking going on here. At the last dealer event I attended in Menlo Park I was told that I would get a call around July to configure my car to be delivered in September. Today I used the online configuration tool and realized that unless I order the most expensive battery option, my car won't even go into production until the end of 2012. I emailed Tesla and was told that I shouldn't expect delivery of my car until sometime in 2013 because there were "thousands of people ahead of me and they were only going to make 5,000 in 2012." But I'm number 4,079. The email response I received was also quite defensive and condescending. Overall, I've seen a video of robots. I've seen the car parked in a dealership. I got a quick ride and some snacks at the factory. I read today the cars will start shipping June 22. But the reality is that I made a big deposit and I have no idea when I will be receiving my car in 2013. So why is everyone bubbling about the great customer experience?
One more rant: The world's most technically advanced car with a touchscreen interface should include turn-by-turn voice navigation as standard. My iPhone has a $29.00 app that does the same thing, but Tesla requires the purchase of a $3,750 package just to get the navigation feature.
Please make dials for the operation of the climate control. I can't buy a car that I have to take my eyes off the road to turn the temperature up or down. I am constantly adjusting the temperature as most people do in their car. A dial that is in a familiar spot that you can recognize by touch and without looking at is the only safe way to do that. It might even make that enormous screen blend in a little better.
Great Job setting up the test drive program.
Congrats!
Cameron Jordan
I would like to know if you have an owner’s manual in the works and if you are going to post it on line?
the car is not available in malaysia... really wan to have it... since can't...
i bought TSLA shares :)
Way to go guys...
Hi, I'm just to sign in for TESLA ,I like you design and technology with EV car. Now I living in Bangkok, Thailand. Very impressive for your design and look for further for you to settle the Brand in South East Asia. That's the Big Market of Compact & Sedan Car.
