Tesla Service Plan vs. Warranty

I have 5 days left to choose a Service Plan. 1) Did all you owners opt for a Service Plan? 2) What plan makes the most sense? 3) Why do I need a Plan if the car is under warranty?

I know should Volkerize - but any quick thoughts would be useful..

You are supposed to take the car in for service every year at $600 visit. If you prepay the service, you save $500 over the four years. Warranty is separate from the service plan. I probably would have bought the service plan if not already negotiating for an overseas assignment where I cannot take the car.

Im still on the fence about this. It seems like this is like a dealer giving you a long term deal on oil changes and tune-ups for the car you buy. Since Tesla is the manufacturer, they are pretty much the only place you can take the car for the recommended service. More than likely I pay for the service plan given that the car is relatively new on the market and not many other options for maintenance.

Would have bought service plan if I could, but not available in Connecticut.

Couldn't afford to pay another 2800.-€ in one go ... So far I am glad cause I don't drive more than 7000 KMer year so I will service the car after 2 years.

Will see how that goes...

The "Service Plan" really needs a better name. All you are doing is pre-paying your annual maintenance to save yourself some money--there are no extra bells and whistles come with it. The extended service plan extends your factory warranty for an additional 4 years/50K miles.

I purchased both.


kback, why is not available here in CT? I am getting my car tomorrow afternoon. Though like luxveritas, I am on the fence, but leaning towards not getting it.

What I hope to find out tomorrow from the service center in Milford, is exactly what am I getting for $600. Everything listed on the "service plan" page like wiper blades and brake pads would only apply if they just so happen to need to be replaced at the time of the annual service. Same thing does for an alignment. Tire rotation is supposed to be done every 5K. So since the service plan is every 12.5K miles, the plan wouldn't cover even a tire rotation. Granted, at the 2 year mark the brake fluid is recommended to be replaced, but brake fluid is cheap and with a power bleeder, it doesn't take very long to do. The only maintenance item I can see costing a bit would be the battery coolant. That though is not recommended until the 4 year mark.

So again, what does the $600 get me?

Per my conversations with Tesla:

- Tire rotations are included in the service plan
- Good for one service per year regardless of miles

If I can get this in writing I will probably get one of the service plans. If I can't get it in writing I may just go with 3 services over 4 years for $1,800 and get my tires rotated locally (90 minutes from service center). Tesla has said maintenance is not required but with a car so expensive I feel like I should do what I have to to keep my peace of mind.

The tire rotation, wheel alignment and wiper blade replacement are done at each annual service. Porsche alignment runs about $400 as a benchmark .
Not sure why Tesla limits the opportunity to sign up for a plan to just 30 days. I would like be able to enroll anytime.

The $400 Porsche alignment is because it's a "Porsche". They use the same alignment machine that any good shop has.

The skill set to do an alignment on a Porsche is the same as any other car.

You will discover you are driving far more than you used to. For pleasure. Annual checkups are required to keep the warranty in force, regardless, AFAIK.

Tire rotation is supposed to happen at 5,000 - 6,000 miles, annual service at 12,500. Is the in between tire rotation included?

Brian H, the annual checkups are only required to keep the warranty valid if you financed through Tesla. My sales rep said Tesla's finance partners are looking to protect their interests since this car is so new and with relatively little history.

Sweetride, I get my car tomorrow but I have already read the owners manual which includes the maintenance for the car. Tire rotation is at every 5,000 miles. Brake fluid change, every 2 years. Battery coolant change, every 4 years. Also they recommend the cabin air filter be changed every 24,000 miles. That is the complete maintenance regiment for the car.

Service Plan doesn't seem logical. I'm going to stop by the showroom tomorrow and ask them to explain the benefits of the service plan vs. simply paying for a tire rotation. I trust the warranty to cover any problems that might appear - and based on this forum, Tesla seems to go above and beyond to correct any defect...

Service plans are available in CT. I got one with my delivery today in Milford.

I used the full 30 days to decide but then went with the 8 years pre-paid service and I'll get the extra 4 years warranty at some point because I want the 8 and 8 coverage. I did not get ranger service.

I still have 1.5 weeks to decide to buy the service plan and am wondering if it's worth it.

According to the site, the service plan includes:

Annual inspection (or every 12,500 miles)
Replacement parts like brake pads and windshield wipers (excluding tires)
24 hour roadside assistance
System monitoring
Remote diagnostics
Hardware upgrades

I'm wondering if we don't buy the service plan then we don't get remote diagnostics and system monitoring. Those are services I would want.

I did not get the service plan because I saw no need for one since not doing annual service has "no effect on warranty". In fact, when I had error messages pop up on my screen, and it wasn't urgent, I e-mailed them through the Teslamotors website, and was surprised to get call back with in hours! When I had some issues with charging in very cold weather, they called me and sent me a new charging cable FedEx next day. Amazingly, they said that they will send a Ranger if it did not fix the problem even though I reminded them that I lived 300 miles away from the nearest service center with a mountain pass that had been closed several times. I even heard Elon Musk admit at a forum in Europe that the service cost should be reduced. The tire rotation/alignment and changing windshield wiper blades shouldn't cost $600! brake pads and brake fluid probably doesn't need changing since brakes are so infrequently used.

1) Free warranty is just like a catastrophic insurance policy which is only activated when something fails.

It's just like you can only access to a free dentist if you have a toothache.

2) Service plans are pre-paid services for maintenance and prevention to avoid being stranded on the road unexpectedly.

It's just like when you pay extra so you can go to the dentist at least yearly so your teeth can be poked and prod to make sure they will hold until next appointment.


It's up to you.

Some prefer #1 to have free warranty and wait until they are stranded on the road because of defects for free repairs.

Some prefer #2 to pay for preventive maintenance service because they want to know the health status of their car well before any part may fail.

The problem is similar to "Why should I pay extra for Premium Sound?"

Some find economic sense for the option others don't!

Take your pick:

1) Free and passively wait or 2) Pay Extra and pro-actively maintain your car.

Either way, you are covered.

I live 13 miles from the service center so I will most likely buy the four year service up front. I will only bring it in once a year however even though I am likely to add more than 12,000 miles per year. I think that is too short of an interval for this type of car....

For me, "hardware upgrades" could be the selling point, depending on what that covers.

"Hardware upgrades" covers whatever parts that you already have.

If you didn't have powered folding mirror before, this hardware upgrade is not free.

My 12 volt battery was fine but they went ahead and replaced it during annual check up.

Others had their 2 FOBs replaced even though they did not fail, but they looked worn out. That's at least $250 a piece (but covered for free if you pre-paid)

Free warranty does not cover wear and tear, so you have to wait until the FOBs fail, not because of look!

I didn't realize that we only had a month to sign up so I missed the deadline but definitely would have purchased it. Now have 28000 miles 2 weeks short of a year. Have paid $600 for 2 services. 1st service did the tire rotation and fixed some minor service bulletin items. All I probably got besides the inspection was new wipers and floor mats. Tire rotations in between are done free. Without doing services they may charge as much as $150 for rotations. 2nd service I again got new wiper blades, fluids changed and a new 12 volt battery. When I spend so much on the car $600 is useful for piece of mind. Could have been $475 had i taken the contract. Also need to offset the potential cost of tire rotations and the possibility of preventative maintenance saving me later inconvenience.


You are mixing the two plans.

The Pre-Paid Service Plan, which is as the name implies, is simple paying up-front for your annual service covers the annual inspection and the replacement of routine wear items, wheel alignment and tire rotation. This is enumerated on the bottom of page two of the agreement.

The poorly named Extended Service Agreement acts like an extended warranty and items like roadside assistance are tied to whether the car is still under warranty (either original or ESA).

Based on the MVPA wording, its not clear to me if the telematics link ever goes away.


@sweetride, The in-between tire rotation does come with the service plan. I got the pre-paid service plan and I'm at 14,500 miles. I got a tire rotation at 6000 and at the annual service.

@hademarco, thanks, I just signed up for 8 years. Still not convinced it's a great value but it is not all that expensive either.

@SilentRunning The price of the ESA started at $2500 then jumped to $4000 with no warning. After flooding Tesla with complaints Tesla offered a 7 day grace period for a buy in. My point is, if you're sure you want it you have nothing to gain by waiting.

I have the service plan and had my 12k service yesterday (at 10 months).

Fluids checked
Complete check of brakes, suspension, etc.
4 week alignment
Tire rotation and pressure check
New wiper blades
New cabin air filter
New fob batteries
New 12v battery (no issues, certainly covered under service plan but maybe not the warranty--do new ICE vehicles have a 12v battery warranty??)
Firmware update (I had not seen 5.9 over the air, so they installed it)
Car wash

I have peace of mind and the knowledge that my daily driver/only car was fully checked.

BTW, had a bunch of service bulletins and issues addressed (steering washers, rear camber bolts, moisture under rear chrome backup light trim, bluetooth microphone replacement, new black key fob covers).

For me the prepaid plan is equivalent to any high end ICE vehicle and well worth it IMHO.

I have seen the laundry lists that some users posted immediately following their annual service plan. Things like alignments, suspension adjustments, bolts, pano roof fixes, torquing of lug nuts, and any number of other updates that have come out recently.

I paid the $1900 for four years and now I don't have to worry about it anymore. If there is an updated part they will install it, it's peace of mind for any buyer should I ever sell the car, and having it makes me feel better.

After $113K it wasn't too much of a stretch to pay for the Service Plan! :)

financially, it is a great deal. Where else today can you get 6.6% per annum risk free?

But only if you are sure you will keep the car for four years. It is not transferable. Also, unlike third-party warranty plans, the unused balance is nonrefundable if you cancel. Use it or lose it. If you have any doubt, don't buy it.

The pre-paid service plan also appears to include tire service every 6250 miles.
