Does anyone know if a second onboard charger can be installed on the car after purchase? I'm not sure if I need one now, but having the option to upgrade would be nice.
It's supposed to be possible to add one later. It's not known if it will cost the same as it does as an option or not. Note that you only need the second charger if you are getting the HPC (high powered charger). The supercharger bypasses all the built in chargers so you don't need a second on-board charger to use the superchargers.
That's wonderful; I didn't understand that before. Jerry3, you just saved me $1,500. Either I'll be charging at home, overnight, or I'll be supercharging! Now I don't feel so bad about getting the tech package mainly for the headlights!
What about supercharger hardware? Can that too be installed at a later date? Is so, that will be great.
Wouldn't the second charger be helpful for using level 2 chargers?

Of course, once the superchargers are available those wouldn't be needed for the 85kW-h Model S.
Maybe someday. Right now, all the j1772 level 2 chargers I am aware of max out at 30A single phase 240V or 7.2 kWh, so not for now.
However, If you get an adapter to use a Roadster charger, then you need the second charger to use more than 40A.
prash; No. There's no such thing as home Supercharging. And any Supercharge-capable battery needs no additional hardware. So your question doesn't apply.
Per a Tesla Rep (Walter Franck) a few months ago, the supercharging hardware (includes more robust wiring to handle 90 kW and hardware to bypass the on-board chargers) will NOT be upgradeable after the fact. This is only an issue on the 40 kWh and 60 kWh battery packs since all the 85kWh cars will have this hardware included. If you are getting the 60 kWh pack, then you might want to consider adding the supercharging hardware option (assuming pricing is reasonable). With the 40 kWh pack, there will be no option to add the supercharging hardware, so even if you upgrade your battery pack in the future, you would not have supercharge capability.

Only if there are chargers with more than 40 amps (IIRC). Level 2 chargers are 30 amps. Level 3 chargers are higher but there aren't all that many of them around right now.
I think the second charger can be added later, but get confirmation before you commit.

I was talking about the 60kWh. I was hoping that we can purchase and install this hardware on a later date, when we have more information about the supercharger network. This way, I will have more time to get the extra money needed.
As long as the supercharger hardware is less than 3K, I might get it. If it is more, then I may downgrade to 40kWh or (after a taking a few shots) upgrade to 85kWh. Let's see.
I think it's only the second charger that can be added later--and I'm not 100% sure about that. My opinion is that the 85 kWh car is going to have the most value per dollar spent for a variety of reasons.
I finally decided not to add the Supercharger hardware to my 60Kwh car, since I doubt that Tesla will ever expand the network to Louisiana. Placing one in Dallas, however, might put me back on the fence.
There's no reason to put a supercharger in any major city. You want them 100 miles or so from the major cities to get you from one city to the next.
Teoatawki, guess I meant in the direction from Dallas to Louisiana - good catch. It's only 169 miles from where I live to Dallas, and a Supercharger would help get there. Once there, I assume that there would be more of an infrastructure to support getting to other cities within Texas.
