Mexico?

I am considering a Model S for use in Mexico City.

Does anyone know of plans to start sales in Mexico?

In the metropolitan area of Mexico City there are said to be 10 million cars, and a huge luxury car market.

It says in the FAQ section that Tesla does not support the export of cars to other countries.

Is there a way around this?

I know folks who drive their cars from the US and even Canada deep into Mexico. My pops lives in Lake Chappalla(sp?) and his neighbors drive from Canada to there.

Tesla model S warranty only covers cars driven in Canada and USA.

stephan;
Not true. Visits are covered; only "extended stays" are not.

I believe the warranty states specifically that driving or even transporting the car outside Canada or the US voids the warranty. I know of no other car company that has such a provision.

@BrianH - Do you have a reference that only "extended stays" are not covered?

Can't find the link, despite Volkerize.com, but the question was discussed at length, and a response from Tesla clarified that it was dependent on the legislation of the "host" country re insurance, etc., requirements. Phone TM again for clarification, if you want.

Hey Brian are you form mexico?

I think you are referring to language in the Extended Warranty, not the basic factory warranty. The extended warranty on page 3 says:

"This Vehicle ESA does not cover certain parts or any Vehicle damage or malfunction directly or indirectly caused by, due to or resulting from normal wear or deterioration, abuse, misuse, negligence, accident, lack of or improper maintenance, operation, storage or transport, including, but not limited to, any of the following:

  • ...
  • Vehicles that have been transported or driven outside the Tesla North America Warranty Region
  • ...

That was my understanding when I got my car. No Mexico.
I thought that it was due to concerns about the integrity of the electical grid and/or dirty power. That obstacle might be worked out at a later time.

Hi, we're from the future (but not from France).

Please refer all your questions to @johncrab.
