I'm pretty sure that the signature versions will be classics.
Investment tip: Signature should drive their car right to a barn for storage... :)
There were around 1000 Sig MS produced for US. There were about 400 software limited S40 produced.

I think a software limited 40 is just a 60kW car. It won't be any more collectable because it's just a 60. Absolutely no difference.
Agree w/ Sudre_ - there is no collector's advantage to having a 60 kWh model that is software limited to 40 kWh. The only difference between such a car and an "official" 60 kWh model is a software setting. The signatures offer far more to collectors, including some with Elon's physical signature in some vehicles.

The 40's do have unique VINs (eighth digit is a "C"). Only 400-500 Model Ses have that.

Make sure it has 5.6 Vampire load would put it at -2 million miles in 10 years.
But then it wouldn't be a classic without the first software vers.
IMO, the Model S is not a good candidate for collector car status. My reasons are: Tesla manufactured approximately 25K+ MSs in the first year – which is a lot of cars from a collector’s standpoint, Tesla will manufacture the MS for quite a long time (pretty much unchanged), and the MS is bot built not hand built. “If” a Model S were to be anointed, my vote would be for the 2012 Signature Red with white interior. Also, IMO, there is not a single car in that article that has a chance of being a collector car.
If you follow collector cars there is only 1.5 ‘modern’ cars that have ascended to the ranks of collector status. First, the McLaren F1, crafted 1992-1998, 106 built. The F1 was close $900K car at birth and pristine models with low to no miles will now bring $4-5 million. The second is the Ford GT, crafted from 2004-06, 4,038 built. The GTs are starting to ascend, but they will. The GT is a relatively high volume for a collector car and that is why the prices have been slow to rise.
Enzo Era Ferrari cars have been stellar collector cars. The most desirable models have very low production numbers (GTO, SWB, Spiders, TRs, and of course the racing cars). Two exceptions being the F40 and F50. IMO, a most interesting, with rapid appreciation, have been the Mercedes 300SL Gullwing and Roadsters of the 1950’s and these were built in relatively high volumes for a collector car. These have shot up over the last 5 years like a SpaceX rocket.
The Mustang has been a high volume car and early ones have appreciated. But only low volume, hand built ones have really become collector cars (1965 Shelby GT350, 1966 Shelby GT 350, 1966 GT 350 convertible (4), Boss 429, and of course a brace of Shelby and Bud Moore sedans and fastbacks.
I love my Model S but it is what it is – a great car to be driven and enjoyed. Future Teslas will be even better, lighter, faster, improve range. Enjoy - carpe diem.

The 2012 Model S will be a collector car, but likely not the 2013. Only 2250 built in 2012 which will increase conductibility per Petero's comment above.
Collector car, probably not. Classic car, probably not. Game changing car most definitely. Collector and classic cars will be old ice cars that guys want to keep around to remember the good old days. But then I'm a new tech guy, not a collector of old stuff.
