Just curious if there is much of an education involved. Also, some valet stations have multiple attendants so I'm wandering if you teach 1 guy, the other guy who retrieves your car may be confused.
On a related note- if you open up the fob, there is a sticker with a frequency # and what I assume is a code. Should you remove the sticker and keep the info in a safe place?thisis of course a rhetorical question.
No, I told the valet my insurance won't let him drive it. So I self parked in the valet section.

I figure the next time I have to valet, I will just pull out a $5.00 bill and a $10.00 bill, and tell the valet... If you park my car, you get the $5. If I park my car, you get the $10. Then let them decide...
Yup, gave the key to the car wash attendant to wash the car, put the key inside, and watched as they pulled the car onto the wash ramp. Closed the door, car locked up like a vault, and wouldn't open WITH THE KEY INSIDE. No help from Ownership experience or local Service facility, couldn't get the doors to unlock. Blocked the car wash for two hours until a second key showed up to unlock the doors.
The last time I gave the valet key to a parking attendant was with a rental car at a famous restaurant in Detroit. After dinner, when the car return the trunk had been bashed open--missing spare, and the radio was missing. (depan) I like both your ideas and will likely use both.

That's horrible terry and Kevin! Did tesla say what happened? Are they fixing it? Where was the key?
Key was in the door panel next to the door handle. I was told this should not happen. If the key's in the car, it should not lock. A software update is coming, so I'm told, to prevent this from happening in the future. The suggestion was to stay in the car if you want it washed!
But there are times when I want to leave a key in a locked car. Could be configurable I guess. See also extensive discussion on Rod and Barbara's Lessons Learned thread.
Has anyone at Tesla considered a "valet" key? One that detunes the throttle response (esp in performance models), isn't capable of unlocking the frunk, etc?

I valeted the car within an hour of receiving it and have done so several times since. Never had an issue....I just let them know its electric (so they understand the no engine noise). I point out the "gear shift" and that there is no "start button". It drives like a normal car, so I'm confident the attendants at the places I frequent can competently handle the task of driving it. I have not had any issues with the fob getting locked inside (thankfully....sorry Terry & Kevin), but I will now emphasize the notion of NOT leaving the fob inside the car.
BTW- I like the ideas above about valet settings and the example of instructions that can be posted on the display screen while in "valet mode". T
he idea/concern of dropping the car off with one valet attendant (who has been given instructions) and then a different, uninformed attendant being tasked to retrieve the car has crossed my mind. So far that hasn't been a problem, as there has been a heightened level of interest in the car so the attendants take an interest in and talk about it amongst themselves.
The final purchase documents that I signed stated that the key fob should never be left in the vehicle.

I've asked Tesla ownership experience if they can build something into the mobile app that will allow owners to open their car from the app directly if there's a FOB issue, attendant issue, etc. They are looking into it, as there should be some level of secure communication between the app and the car to check other systems as well. Tesla states that the car SHOULD NOT LOCK if the key is left inside. The newest Software update may also contain increased range for the antennas to recognize the FOB anywhere in the car. There are apparently some BLIND spots in the car, according to engineering.
Part of the problem is accountability. The venue/restaurant just "fobs" it off on the sub-contractor if the valet trashes the car. The valet is individually not bonded or insured or flush, and just does a disappearing act, and gets another (identical?) job elsewhere.
Without the chance to have 'fun' with the cars, the job is mind-numbing, and there are many decades of in-group acceptance of 'bad boy' behaviour when out of sight and supervision.
A perfect application for autonomous cars, in communication with a central parking garage computer!
Thanks Captain_Zap for pointing out the disclosure for never leave a key fob in the vehicle.
However, cheapo Prius does not need such a disclosure because it uses technology to make that an impossibility.
I hope kgmd's report of future engineering fix will be the answer.
We have a Prius and we can definitely lock the fob in the car. There are times when I want to keep one key in the car. Shouldn't do that in a Tesla S though because it drains the fob battery.
Need valet mode.... Make the car act like a Hugo.... Unit will beep an flash valet mode. No radio No trunk or frunk Also adds a geo fence of 5 miles? Also display instructions so they can park. Like press park and just get of car with fob. Doors and Windows close and lock If they leave key in car it honks horn and does not lock car...
Last hotel stay valet refused to take the key. Instead, he said I could self park and keep the key. I guess he knew something about the Model S.
Yes! Last Saturday we escaped our school event and decided to go the Bel Air Hotel in Southern California. When I pulled up to the valet, I asked, “are you familiar with this car?” Yes, Mr. Musk and his close friends visit us often. I handed him my fob and off we went. I did notice a Roadster parked and being charged.
Upon my return, the car had travelled less than a 100 feet and was safe and sound.
Just once - had a lunch meeting at the Lion & Compass a few weeks ago. Not the first Model S the valet had ever seen, but the only one that day. Kept checking my phone to see where it was, tho! :-)

No way, I see how some of them drive. I never valeted my Chevy either. Aside from being worried about how they drive, for me personally, valeting my car would be like handing a stranger the keys to my house. I just can't do it.
Yes, in the city (NYC), i just tip a little extra to park it upfront myself, but I actually did go through a car wash. Specifically showed them how to put car in N, and explicitly told them NOT to leave the keys in the car...worked fine...had my iphone app ready to open car just in case though...
