One charger for two Tesla's??

Well I have talked up Tesla and the model s (I have one reserved) so much - then I mentioned to my wife they will be coming out with a model x (crossover with more room than a van)that now she wants the model x! We currently have a toyota sienna (2005)with 169,000 miles. It runs great and now we are going to try to make it last till the model x comes out. So it seems logical that I would need two chargers in my garage. Is there any way to only have one charger with two heads to plug in both cars? If you doubled the amps going two it?? Know its probably not likely but its just a thought.

It would be easier an cost less to have two chargers.

or, if wall space is in short supply, mount a dual NEMA 14-50 and use two UMCs.

A single charger with dual heads would take twice as long to charge both cars, which is a little impractical.

I would suggest either two chargers, or car each car every second night, if the distances you travel allow for it.

I see little need for concurrent charging here. The charge time is pretty short, even for a full charge and I'd say it's highly unlikely you and your spouse would ever need to charge both Teslas at the same time, much less require a full charge. Also, I doubt that you would really want to load your electrical system with that much amperage flow - we'd be talking over 140 amps. With a 300 mile pack (or even 240), you ain't gonna be charging all that often. And when you do, it won't take all that long, in all likelihood. Now if you both had the very slow (and always) recharging Chevy Volt, that would be a different story.

Talking about the future here. Having more than one EV should be the standard case (that's what we all hope, at last). So you want to plug them all into a socket or a charger - you don't want to get up in the middle of the night and switch plugs. Plus, you don't want to leave any EV unplugged if you leave for some longer period of time. As demand rises, I hope we will see a wall charging unit with multiple heads that can do a useful load balancing between all connected EVs and the electric service of your home.

I was thinking along the same line just for general charging... I have a 200 amp 240 volt service. Right now I am probably only using 12 amps on each phase. If the charging system of the future knew that I was on low usage it could up the charge to 30Kw.

I have the HPC for my Roadster, but I rarely run it over 40A. Probably should have just gone with the mobile connector.

I expect I'll simply install a separate NEMA 14-50 for the Model S, assuming it has something comparable to the mobile connector.

Both cars charging at 40A won't tax my electrical system, but I'll probably still schedule them to charge at different times.

I definitely see 2 electric cars in my garage. We do travel 50 to 100 miles a day each (wife and I). Maybe 1 charger would do - just charge every other night for each car. Would always be able to add another charger if needed.

You'll need two chargers on two separate circuits. Having one installed means adding a second one is minimal cost. You could stagger your charge times too so they don't overlap.

My wife and I have two EVs, a RAV4-EV and a Roadster. The chargers for both cars share the same 40A circuit because it is about 80 feet to the panel and we don't have enough capacity for two circuits anyway. We don't find it difficult to alternate charging.

I have a 100 amp breaker on my HPC right now...when the Model S comes out, I'll install a NEMA 14-50 and charge both cars concurrently at 40 amp or under.

Has anyone heard when Tesla will be coming out with an adapter for the 1000's of public charging stations going on-line in California this year and next year. Charging at home is fine for me 90% of the time, but when I travel to So-Cal and a charging station is down (like Newport Beach last week) it can be a real headache....

I was told second quarter of this year. We'll see.
