This is the question I have. I saw on the website where you can trade in your car during the financing part of the process. Is this done by a separate company? It would make it easier if trade in values are on par with conventional dealerships than having to try to sell your car by yourself in order to be able to finance a Tesla.
In my opinion you can get more money for your car if you sell it yourself using Ebay. And I am sure that Tesla Motors would prefer it too that you would sell your car yourself.
jeepn30, this makes zero business strategy sense.
What is the footprint / space of a bloated ICE car dealership from last century? It's acres and acres of depressing / weather beaten / oil soaking death.
What is the footprint / space of the future (i.e. Tesla Motors showroom)? It's much smaller -- scaled to JIT deliveries. Additionally, why would the future of the auto industry want to peddle in used poison?
Looked into it.
Tesla is using AutoNation to handle trades.
I went on there site, plugged in my vehicle information,
and received a Kelly Blue Book Apraisal which I found
to provide a reasonable price range for BMW Roadster.
Then asked Tesla Configuration for link to Tesla's
Portal to AutoNation so could get a formal offer
from AutoNation on my car ..., good for 10 days.
Figured that way when the time came price should be
very similar.
Well AutoNation offer (good for 10 days) was for
about 1/3 of the high end Kelly Blue Trade-in Value
provided by there own site and about $5,000 less
than the low end range of Kelly Blue Book Trade-in Value!
I listed the BMW Roadster on Craigslist and had it sold
within a week or two.
Short story is I wouldn't recommend doing a trade-in ...,
unless you just like putting your hard earned money into
other people's pockets.
By the way you don't have to wait until your about to receive your Tesla. Just ask for Tesla's Portal (link) to AutoNation and you can go in plug in your information and find out what there offer will be. Granted, if you like the offer, you will have to do it again when the time comes since offer is only good for 10 days. That said the offer "should" be very similar provide car remains in equivalent condition and miles have not increased dramatically. You don't have to wait to find out ..., ask for the Tesla Portal URL to AutoNation!
their
Yes, AutoNation seems to be allowing itself a large profit margin. Some reported getting good prices, but not many.
+1 on @wonder's experience. AutoNation is acting as a wholesaler so their offers are typically really low (might get lucky with a car that's highly in demand but for my 10 y.o. BMW that wasn't the case).
In my case, the AutoNation offer was about 40% of KBB; I ended up doing a private party sale (Craigslist) and got 97% of KBB (probably would've gotten more if I'd waited, but the convenience of doing an all-cash deal with minimal hassle was worth it).
I too tried AutoNation. I was shocked at how low they try to go. I ended up selling my '04 Acura TL on craigslist for double what AutoNation offered.
Can you email me how I can go to Tesla
Portal to AutoNation?
Thank you.
