BLACK PAINTED ROOF vs Body Colored Roof vs Panoramic Roof

Did anybody else see that there was a choice to have the roof of your Model S painted black? Go to the design your Model S design studio and pick a color other than black ...then select roof options. I hope that a black roof is a choice or option and not the standard roof!

Yes, it's just a choice. The body color roof and the black roof will probably be the same price.

I'm not sure why anyone would want a black roof on their car, but I guess is some kind of a style statement.

I would like to have panoramic roof. But I need to see the actual thing before I decide. Until then I go for panoramic roof.

Chaiyawut Keereeto: I have seen the panaoramic roof on the alpha and the beta car in person and it is really nice. Now that the panoramic roof is officially listed as an option and not a standard feature I hope it is not priced too high. We got to sit in the back seat of the beta version with a panoramic roof. The back seat head room and leg room were a bit cramped and I fear it may be worse with a solid roof.

@JTSEA I'm in Thailand, so I'm concerned about solar-load transfer. I hope infrared coating is sufficient as they said "reduce solar load to 20%". And I hope it would look premium.

How tall are you, JTSEA? Since you're Caucasian, head room and leg room might be a bit cramped for you. But averagely Asians are not as tall as you, so it might not be a problem. Still have to wait and see though. :)

Tesla rep told me that there will be a sunroof option without purchasing a panorama roof. I know MB, BMW, Audi all have glass sunroof as standard equipment. Panorama option on MB only cost $1000 extra. If Tesla overprices $2000 more than MB's price, I will have to go with the black roof with a sunroof instead of panorama. Let's hope they match the pricing of options similarly to MB and competitors.

By the way, I love the Magic Sky roof technology available on new MBs that's extremly impressive. Tesla should include this neat technology on its Model S panorama glass roof!

@cytek This is electrochromic glass or smart glass. The same technology used in luxury cars' side mirrors to reduce glare.

It's quite interesting to have smart glass as a roof, anyway.

I second that I hope that the black roof is not the standard option. All great comments!

No, it won't be.

There is some evidence that the black roof may be the standard option.

1) The black roof is to the left of a bar separating the other 2 options. This is the same format used to seperate the paint and wheel standard & upgrade options.
2) If I remember correctly the Roadster had a hardtop option and it was more for the body colored one over a black one.

Just an observation...

I want panoramic but if it's cost prohibitive, I'll go with what I hope is that standard painted option to match the car

Get the car in black and the roof will match.

Henry Ford is back.

Any color of black you want ...

Keereeto - I sat in front and back of the beta S. The back seat head and leg room is noticeably compromised for me when sitting in front (seat all the way back). I am 6'4" 210 lbs.

What is the difference in front seat headroom between the sunroof and the standard top?

On Facebook just after the factory open house, a tesla representative responded that their is not a cost difference for the 3 different roof options. I had mentioned to someone in the post that the panoramic roof was an option and the tesla rep replyed that their was no cost difference between the 3.

Capt601, that's some real news. I'll believe it when I see it.

I agree. See oct 10 facebook post by tesla motors. Titled 2012 tesla model s test ride- motor trend. Read down the comments where someone asked "retractable glass panoramic roof (standard equipment"- is that true? Tesla motors responded back in next post " it sure is!"
I don't believe it is true either, but that would be nice cause the options could add up real quick

It looks like the black roof option was removed from the design studio.

The black roof option is available on the signature only (according to design studio).

No, it's still there. But if you select black for paint color, then the black roof option disappears.

Evidently, they use the same color as the black paint option for the black roof option with other colors. So they're not going with matte black or anything like that.

Frankly, if it were me, and I wanted a black roof with a different color body, I would get the body colored roof and then have the roof coated with vinyl. That way the roof can be body colored or black, depending on my mood down the road.

Also, a black roof might limit sale-ability a bit. So it's nice to have the option to remove the vinyl.

Get a white body with a black roof and your look like a police car coming down the highway, just might clear the road in front of you as an added bonus... ;)

@BYT
Nah, it's guaranteed to build a traffic jam in front of you as people slow down to avoid a ticket.

FYI, the guy that posted the "It sure is" comment to the panoramic option on Facebook does not appear to work for or be associated with Tesla Motors. So I'm still counting on spending 2K or so on that option.

Did anyone else notice the new description of the Panoramic Roof on the options page? It now says "manual sunshades and wind buffet INCLUDED." (emphasis added). Previously, they specifically said that there would not be any sunshade. If I'm reading this correctly, this is a nice change by Tesla as I wanted this option but was concerned about sun glare.

Yah, probably cheap to include to address a huge concern for some buyers.

Peter, I missed that, thanks for pointing it out. Remarkable! It's good news for two reasons: For one, it's a very useful addition, and second, it seems to show (once again) that Tesla listens. That's a way to build confidence. :-)

@Volker.Berlin: and second, it seems to show (once again) that Tesla listens

Agreed. Many of us expressed concern about that. I probably would have passed on the pano roof. Now, with the sun shade, it's on my list for sure.

I just hope that TM also "listened" to comments on the betat interior and and will make serious modifications to the design.

The only time I ever close the shade on my sunroof is (oddly enough) when it isextrememly sunny. During the middle of the day in the summer. when the sun is directly above, even with the tinted glass, you can really feel the heat from the sun unless you close the shade. I leave it open (the shade, not the whole sun roof) all other times.

olan;
"directly above"! You must live very close to the Tropic of Cancer. Up here around 49° latitude even in midsummer the sun is well to the south at noon.

Heh.
