Like many of you now or at some point in your life, I have a fantasy of owning an stunning, powerful, energy-conscious vehicle. One year out of a new media major, I'm very typically limited in my resources, however presented with this unique opportunity.
I have a variety of software development experience which may enable me to trade development of a kiosk for an '83 Porch 911 electric conversion. But of course, this car is loaded with about a dozen lead-acid batteries and lasts all of 50 miles.
What I'm wondering is if it's possible to upgrade the battery technology to something commercially available and lithium-based, assuming some integration hassle? What would I need to find out about the car to know if that's a viable option?

In short, the answer is yes, but I would recommend joining the Electric Vehicle Discussion List at http://www.evdl.org . There are many people on that list which have done this kind of conversion you are looking at.
Yes this can be done and in fact I have just done it with a Miata EV. You can get CALB Li-FePO4 batteries that would do quite well and cut your battery weight in half. With 200 amp-hr cells I think you will likely push 80 miles with no problem. Good luck and also look at www.evalbum.org
