Planning California Trip in my New Roadster

I am planning a trip in mid May 2011 from Menlo Park CA to Mendocino CA, then to Eureka CA. After returning to Menlo Park I plan to continue to Santa Monica CA along the coast route. I will then leave the Los Angeles area on I-5 and CA 99 to Merced, and continue to Angeles Camp CA. My Roadster will be delivered the beginning of March so at this time I have no actual experience.

I would appreciate any information about power consumption and charging along any portions of this route.

There are numerous places along 101 (Robobank locations) and at least one on the I-5 route. The backup is RV Campgrounds - bring your own charge cord.

From a planning perspective I use 275Wh/mile and 1Kwh for every 1,000' net elevation gain. This assumes a steady speed of ~ 70 mph, no A/C or other heavy drain.

Along the Northern California coast the charging locations are more scarce. In Hopland there is a Solar living center which has two NEMA 14-50's available. Ukiah has a charging location with another 14-50. I would recommend you have as much charge as you can before you turn off 101 to Mendocino. I've used the Hopland and Ukiah locations. They do not get much use.

The usual way to Mendocino is to turn off 101 at Cloverdale but there is a road from Ukiah to Mendocino so you might consider charging @ Ukiah then heading to the coast.

I've yet to go to Mendocino with my Tesla, but I'm hoping to do that this spring.

Is there a web page with Pacific Cost charging locations shown and available amperage listed?
I want to travel from Seattle to LA along 101 and coastal roads. Then, separately, I will return to Ketchum, Idaho and I'd like a map of charge spots through Nevada, if one exists. Thanks! G.

Thank you, evjc. I'm hearing a lot about campgrounds having AC and I wonder whether any have 220V. Does anyone know what's common in RV parks or car-camp locations?

A good source I've found, particularly for Tesla Roadsters, is the EV Charger News.
They show lots of chargers in the Northwest at http://www.evchargernews.com/regions/ch-tesla-tesla.htm.

Campgrounds usually have a few 14-50's and a bunch of tt-30's

The lingo among RV campgrounds for 220volt outlets with a NEMA 14-50 is "50 amp" hookups. The "30 amp hookups" are only 120 volts, not 240 volts like the "50 amp" ones are.
