Tesla Motors to Open Colorado Gallery

Prospective customers may test-drive world’s only electric sports car starting Friday at Tesla’s first Rocky Mountain facility.

BOULDER, Colo.–Tesla Motors will open a gallery in Boulder on Friday and offer test drives of the world’s leading electric vehicle throughout the weekend.

Colorado is a strong regional market and strategic base for Tesla, the only automaker producing and selling highway-capable EVs. The centennial state aims to be the most environmentally friendly in the nation, with Gov. Bill Ritter getting accolades as America’s “Greenest Governor.”

US Roadster owners get a $7,500 federal tax credit, and Colorado’s progressive public policy offers additional incentives for residents who buy this year. Coloradans get more benefits if they replace their gas guzzler with an all-electric, zero-emission Roadster – the only car that’s faster than a Porsche 911 and twice as energy efficient as a Toyota Prius.

“Tesla’s newest gallery is a huge coup for those of us who live in and love Colorado,” said Kimbal Musk, a Tesla board member, Internet entrepreneur and restaurant owner in Boulder. “Colorado was the adopted home of turn-of-the-century inventor Nikola Tesla, and it’s great to see that our state is still inspiring visionary change.”

Service Everywhere

Tesla’s Boulder gallery -- 915 Pearl St. in the popular Pearl Street Mall – is the newest regional hub for Tesla’s pioneering mobile service squad. Tesla is the only automaker offering “house calls” so all customers can enjoy hassle-free service without leaving their home or office.

At the heart of Tesla’s commitment to customer service is the team of Tesla Rangers – professional technicians will drive or fly to customers’ homes and perform annual inspections, firmware upgrades and other services. US customers pay $1 per roundtrip mile from the closest service center, with a minimum charge of $100.

Based on vaunted customer service programs from pioneering retailers such as and the Geek Squad, Tesla’s house-call approach is an industry-leading initiative to give customers peace of mind – whether they live in Aspen, Albuquerque or Anchorage. The Boulder facility will be the service hub for customers throughout the Rocky Mountains and Great Plains.

The Most Convenient Car You Can Buy

Tesla has delivered nearly 900 cars, and many owners in Northern climates drive them all winter long. Tesla performed cold-weather testing on a frozen lake in Arvidsjaur, Sweden. Scandinavia is a leading European sales market, and Canadian deliveries start later this year. Electric seat warmers and heating vents thaw drivers on frigid nights. The Roadster can also be fitted with snow tires and chains, and customers may select from two hard-top roof options.

In addition to being four-season friendly, the Roadster consumes no gasoline whatsoever and therefore never requires a time-consuming detour to the pump. Owners simply charge the Roadster overnight from a conventional 120- or 240-volt outlet, and every single morning the car is fully charged – roughly 240 miles of driving.

Customers say never going to a gas station is one of the top benefits of Roadster ownership – even more appealing than the car’s scorching 0-60 acceleration in 3.7 seconds, or its relatively small carbon footprint.

The Roadster requires less routine maintenance than conventional cars. It does not need regular oil changes or exhaust system work. Roadsters have no spark plugs, pistons, hoses, belts or clutches to replace. Zero tailpipe emission means no smog checks. Tesla recommends a standard service and diagnostic inspection once a year or every 12,000 miles – and Rangers can perform anywhere.

About Tesla

Tesla’s goal is to produce increasingly affordable cars to mainstream buyers – relentlessly driving down the cost of EVs. San Carlos, Calif.-based Tesla sells cars online and has delivered nearly 900 Roadsters to customers in North America and Europe. In addition to Boulder, Colorado, Tesla has showrooms in California’s Silicon Valley and Los Angeles, New York, Seattle, London and Munich.

Tesla achieved overall corporate profitability in July, thanks to strong demand for the Roadster. The all-electric sports car is faster than Porsche 911 or Audi R8 yet is six times as efficient as conventional sports cars. With an EPA-estimated range of 244 miles per charge, it costs less than $5 to refuel.
