Recharge without stopping

Ok, you are driving down the highway and your range is approaching zero. You pull up beside a consenting truck and an arm comes out of the right front quarter panel and attaches a tow line to the rear of the truck. You then let out some tow line as you fall in behind the truck and then just take your foot off the accelerator and the charge flows. When you approach 80%, reel in the tow line as you pull up beside the truck and the arm removes the tow line and off you go with a full charge.

Cross country in an electric car without stopping. Bet that has never been done. Who is going to do it first?

Do you plan to pee in a bottle? Or is there another arm that comes out of the truck for that?

I can't imagine the driver of the truck being happy to provide full regen on a Tesla for over an hour.

Pee in a bottle? How did Charles Lindbergh do it? How did Steve Fossett do it?

As far as the truck "being happy", I would guess that a consenting truck would be compensated.

Charles Lindbergh apparently peed into a funnel that ran out of the cockpit. (Not while in the station, presumably). We could add this to the prioritized upgrade list, I suppose.

Having fun here.....yes, but it really would be possible to drive a Model S across the country without stopping. That would put you in the record book.

Yah, that wouldn't be dangerous or anything... and probably violates one or more laws.

Well, all military aircraft can be refueled in flight mitigating the need to stop. The only reason a military aircraft lands is for crew rest or they have reached their destination.
I retired from the Air Force and once flew non-stop from Guam to NJ. It was something like a 16 hour flight. We got refueled over Hawaii.

So it is possible for the above scenario to happen if both the car and a truck is so equipped.

I know this is about an ICE car, but if anyone here has seen the movie Gumball Rally, there is a scene where they drive a Ferrari Daytona onto a truck while underway on the highway, and refueled it.

Sure - and in the same way you could bike cross country without stopping in a few days. New record.

I feel sorry for the truck, whose fuel economy is going to "tank." There is never a free ride, and in this case you would using the truck's gas or diesel to recharge the Model S thru regen... Many more inefficiencies and losses than needed. Not a cost efficient or good idea IMO.

strip the drive train out of any car and tow it along, would be more efficient than dragging regen

How about a super charger on a truck? Don't have to stop, just drive up the platform of the truck and let it carry your car for half an hour.

Might be a good case for inductive charging if it is ever going to take off.

Yeah, a supercharger on a truck would do it. Only problem is that it does not exist.

What I suggest is something that a couple of red neck cowboys could go out and do today.

Qcom is working on a recharge that you just drive over and do not have to stop. Qualcomm has been working on the charger for some time, the HALO may be ready any day. Never doubt TECH.

So basically, you use a truck as an "external range extender": an ICE that charges your battery while you drive. Doesn't sound so record-breaking if you put it like that, imho.

better for TM to install solar panels on the roof that charge. Ford C-Max is apparently introducing a car to do just that.

I would vote for rescue trucks that can come to your side from say AAA, or TESLA and plug in to dump dc current and enough kwh to get to a supercharger, or home. This could be for those that make the mistake of not allowing for weather or overestimating range etc. They could basically be a battery to battery transfer of energy just on a large scale. Sure would be better than calling for a tow.

The amount of power that you could get from solar panels that would fit on the Model S, even under ideal conditions, would be woefully inadequate to power the car.

Swap the battery on the truck. Faster. No need for the high intensity of the super charger. Charge the spare battery at 30 kw and it will be ready for the next swap. Only problem is the truck needs to drive across the country too. As for toileting, outhouse on the truck...

You can't charge and have the car in gear. Seems pretty dumb to me. How much fuel is this electric hauling truck using while following along connected to a charging cable for 45 min to an hour? The 90 sec battery swap is still a far better or practical idea.
