60 kWh Seattle area to Salem, OR

I'm wanting to take my 60 kWh Tesla S (no dual charger) from the Bellevue area to Salem, Oregon
Looking for hints from anyone whose taken a similar trip. Charging station locations, etc.

I have an 85 kWh an haven't made that trip yet (my parents live in Salem, and I live in Woodinville). The hiccup is charging. I think the Tigard Tesla Service Center lets you charge on their quick charger, but it still takes some time and I don't think you can make it all the way to Tigard without a charging stop. The Burgerville charger would be helpful!

The J1772 stations are simply too slow for a practical trip, unless you wanted to hang out in Portland for 4-6 hours on the way.

I don't know what charging stations would work, but I would recommend trying to find a NEMA 14-50 outlet about half way to Salem. With the distance between Bellevue and Salem about 220 miles, you have to figure about four hours of driving, and enough on-the-road charging to carry you half of that distance. A 30 amp power source will recover 110 miles in around seven hours; a 40 amp power source may take around five hours. So finding a 40 amp power source will mean the difference between an 11 hour trip and a nine hour trip.

There is a KOA in Longview/Castle Rock: I don't know whether they have NEMA 14-50 outlets or whether they would allow you to charge, but it is certainly worth a call.

I recently did a trip from Redmond to Portland and back in a 85kWh car with twin on-board chargers. With good weather conditions, driving exactly at the posted speed limits, having the HVAC system in range mode, I found it took me 67.8kWh of energy to go 189 miles (average of 358 Wh/Mi) which took me into Portland. No rain or water on the road, no wind and sunny skies with temps in the mid 50's, so didn't need to use much HVAC.

To get to Salem, if we say it's about 222 miles from Bellevue, you would need about 80 kWh of energy assuming the 358 Wh/Mi under good conditions. If you have bad conditions, and/or need to run the heat a lot, you might add another 20% to that power total to about 96kWh.

So with the 60kWh car, you would probably want to do a charge somewhere before Portland to pick up at least 15kWh of power. To be safe, you might want to get up to 30kWh of power if conditions were poor so you could get comfortably to Portland. Centralia might be a good stop or finding some campgrounds with 50 amp power available would also be a good option.

Then after your charge you could drive to the Washington Square mall and plug into the Tesla High Power Wall Charger or 14-50 plug and charge at the mall. You can call the Tesla store there ahead and let them know you will be charging there. They will do their best to make sure a plug is available. Since you don't have the twin onboard chargers, you will won't be able to take advantage of the full 70 amps available on the HPWC there but it will still charge at 40amps. They also have a NEMA 14-50 plug available. If your last leg from Portland to Salem is about 50 miles, you would probably want to charge for at least 3 hours or more on the 14-50 plug or the HPWC. You will probably get you about 20 miles of rated range (317Wh/Mi) per hour when plugged into either setup. You could eat some lunch/dinner there and walk around the mall for awhile.

With the 60kWh car and a single on-board charger, you will need to be prepared to spend a couple of hours charging at some points along your trip. You will probably need to put in between 25kWh to 40 kWh of power. Time to do that on a 14-50 would be about 3.8 to 6 hours of charging. If you are on 30 amp chargers, you may be looking at between 5 and 8 hours of charging time for the trip.


I don't think the Washington Square Mall Tesla store has an HWPC for customer use. I could be wrong, but I think they would have offered it to me if they had one. They do have a Roadster HPC, but when I was there a few days ago, they did not have a working adapter for it. They do have a NEMA 14-50 outlet available. The HWPC would be 80 amps, not 70, if they had one.

Also, the Burgerville in Centralia does not have a NEMA 14-50. I believe there is a 30 amp public charger nearby, but that would not be as good for the OP as finding a 14-50 at an RV park.

I charged on the HWPC at the Washington Square Mall in the Tesla Parking space over the President's Day weekend. I spoke with Jessica (I think she's the store manager there) and asked if I could charge on the HWPC, she said most definitely and was very helpful.

The Roadster HPC and the NEMA 14-50 plug are on the right side of the Tesla reserved parking spaces, the HWPC is on the very left side of the Tesla reserved parking spaces. I think the test drive car is usually plugged into the HWPC. The staff at the store is really great. I went to the Tesla store and someone walked back with me to the parking space and moved the test car so I could charge in the HWPC. If anyone wants to use the HWPC and the test drive car is plugged in, call the store and they will come down and unplug it. All the chargers in the Tesla space are available for Tesla owners to use.

@DouglasR, next time you stop by the mall, call them and let them know you'd like to use the HWPC and they will do their best to make sure it's available for you to use.

When I checked the HWPC on my iPhone app while charging, it was only delivering 71amps at 204 volts. The screenshot I took of my Model S iPhone app showed the charge detail of the HWPC as: 40mi/hr 204V 71/72A. That was when the state of my battery had 93 miles of rated range left and the app showed 3 hours and 22 minutes of time remaining for a standard charge level. Probably has something to do with the power available to Tesla by their parking spaces there.

Thanks @blurry. I guess there was a bit of miscommunication. I did call the store, and they were very helpful. Jared came down and met me in the garage, and I plugged in to the Roadster HPC using a borrowed adapter. He did say something about another charger, but when I asked him about an HWPC, he said they were thinking about putting one in, but weren't sure the panel could handle the load. Maybe he was referring to adding one for the parking spots on the right. It might have saved me some time by plugging into the HWPC, but given your description, probably not: the Roadster HPC delivered 70 solid amps and charged at about 40 mph.

On my trip to California and back, I stopped at six Roadster stations. The fastest I got was 50 mph, and most charged at around 40 mph. I think that most commercial circuits are 208 volts as opposed to 240.

Thanks for all your feedback/info! Until we get the supercharger her in the Pacific Northwest it's going to take some patience on longer trips. I've scoped out a J1772 in Ridgefield where I might grab a bite to eat and some possible shopping. Will definitely check on the 14-50 at the campground.

@epley. I also live in Woodinville and my in-laws are in Salem. So this will be of interest to you.

If/when Tesla releases the rumored CHAdeMO adapter, travelling in WA and OR will be a piece of cake for owners of 60's and 85's.

Half of my trip completed! Did Woodinville to Salem today.
Two charging stops, once in Castle Rock for 2 hours 15 minutes to eat a lunch and once at the Tesla store in Tigard, OR Washington Square for an hour. Traveled 251 miles using 77.5 Kwh energy at 309 kWh/mi. Traveled at 62 mi/hr on cruise control with avg temp at 55 degrees. Not bad, but can't wait for the supercharger!


Where in Castle Rock did you charge? If it was at that KoA or somewhere else that is not already listed, you might want to add it to Recargo or one of the other apps.

Cascade Select Market. It's a CHAdeMO and J1772 charger & it's already on Recargo.

Did you have to call the service center in Tigard ahead?

When I stopped at Tigard, I did call, partly because I was driving around in the wrong garage. Jared directed me to the right place, came down to meet me, and offered to move one of their cars if it was blocking the charger. However, the garage is open all the time, so you don't need to call (and I didn't on the return trip).

Finished my Woodinville, WA to Salem, OR road trip. 251 miles each way. I averaged 309 wh/mi on the way down and 336 wh/mi on the way back. I think the higher number was a result of the rain and about 10 degrees cooler weather. I only found 2 places that had the higher charging rates (240V and 40 Amps). One was at the Cascade Select Market in Castle Rock, and the other at the Tesla store in Tigard, OR. The charging spot was open and I added about an hours worth of charge to get to my final destination. I had difficulty finding the Tesla spots in the parking garage. When coming off the freeway exiting into Washington square the first parking garage is not the correct one, go past it to the next garage (it's a smaller looking garage, but it's more underground. Enter the garage and turn right & you will see the big Tesla sign). No need to call the store unless its being used by their test drive vehicle.
What I learned during the drive was that I could comfortably drive about 80% of the Ideal miles, and breaking the charging stops up to about 1/3 and 2/3 of the trip in case the chargers were in use and I could go to the next location without worry.
I did check out the Gee Creek rest stop, they had several chargers where I got 240 V and 30 amps resulting in 24 mi/ hr charge. This is one stop before the Country cafe in Ridgefield (going north). This charger is also 240 V, 30 amps. Wendy's in Centralia also gave the same charge. I parked here for at least three hours while my wife and I shopped the outlets and grabbed a bite to eat. The Wendy's is across the street from Burgerville which has the dedicated Tesla Roadster charger. I was out of luck here since I didn't have the coveted converter. I did stop and and talk to them in hope that they might have a converter but no luck!
In conclusion, it's totally doable if you're not in a hurry. A 4 hour trip becomes at least 7 to 8 hours. I can't wait for the rumored supercharger in Centralia, I figure this will reduce the trip time to about 4 1/2 hours!

The easy way to get the correct garage at the Washington Mall in Portland: There are two garages north and south of Nordstrom, only one has a stop sign on the circular road, that is the correct entrance, enter and turn right. Always open, well lighted.

Sure would be nice for Tesla to make the adapter for the quick chargers that are now installed up and down I-5 as a part of the "electric highway" available to its customers in the US soon. The special adapter called a CHAdeMO is to be provided as standard equipment with the release of the Tesla S this year in Japan. It would be nice if the adapter were made available, especially to those of us in the NW as soon as possible. Having that would make it reasonable to use my 60 kw auto get back and forth to the airport at highway speeds, instead of having to crawl along, use my energy conservation mode, and still have to spend a lot of time at one of the slow chargers.

@Kvanderson55. It was tough to see all the CHAdeMO connections right next to the J1772's with 240V and 30 amps and not be able to use them! If and when they do develop a CHADdeMO adapter, I believe you would need the supercharger option (which you most likely have as an early 60)

I have a 60KW and frequently make the run to Portland.
My S has the single charger and requires over seven hours on the 14/50 at the WA Mall in Portland. I arrrive early and leave it all day. My clients help me get around the city.

There are three options there, one high power for twin chargers,(Note the demo car is usually on it) one 40amp 14/50 next to the Roadster charger. The garage is well lighted and the TESLA area is defined only Tesla. It is open to us 24/7

I have about 20 miles left on arrival and I orginate from Raft Island in Gig Harbor. About 10 miles to I5 from there.

There is a charger across the street from Burgervill at the Wendys
(expect 20 miles in an hour on this charger) that may give you a boost. It is easier to access as it is just off I5 to the left.
The one further south is in a grocery parking lot well off the freeway. I normally drive 60/70.

Anyway you cut it you will be pushing the limits here For Salem.
Make sure you have a 40amp and some time for teh trip home!
Suggest we Washingtonians press TESLA for a supercharger in Centralia. That will allow us plenty of range. I think we have enough S inventory to put a little pressure on Freemont right now and I know they are looking for places.
