Automatic tire pressure maintenance

I believe I read somewhere that the optional air suspension system uses built-in air compressors to regulate ride stiffness, car height, etc. I also know that Model S has a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS). Since tire pressure has a direct impact on energy efficiency, could the air compressors also be used in conjunction with the TPMS to maintain optimal tire pressure at all times? Any thoughts?

How would you get the compressed air into the tires ? It would have to travel throught the axle, hub and rim. Not an easy task I might guess ;)

I guess not, but it can be done. I have seen an old Russian-build military truck with "stalins organ" at the platform which had tire pressure control for all ten tires. 196something design, so the engineering problems have been solved decades ago. Cabin had individual gauges for all of them, all with Cyrillic symbols, and lots of other meters so it was kind of stepping into 1970-era airplane cabin.

I've always wondered if something like this could be used in cars and trucks and work as well as it does for bicycles: http://www.gizmag.com/pumptire-self-inflating-bike-tire/19613/

My son's H1 hummer has thie feature, as do most H1s. You can read the pressure in each tire and adjust it from the cabin via the on board air compressor.
