Brrr…I’m freezing & seeking some hot software updates

I am a happy and satisfied P85+ owner in Norway. I am parking outside my house because I do not have a garage. It’s getting colder these days and I am trying to figure out how to enter a 'warm wonder with a view' in the morning. I have the Tesla iOS App and do turn on the climate system remotely before showering & brewing the coffee in the morning. I have all options like tech- & cold weather package and would like to remotely and pre set times for having a heated and defrosted car in the morning, plugged in- or not.

I like to see a new Tesla-OS and an iOS/App updates offering this:

- Timer optional settings for starting climate system/battery heating
- Timer settings & Remote control for starting defrosting climate front window
- Timer settings & Remote control for starting defrosting back window & mirrors
- Timer settings & Remote control for starting seat heating

The timer setting could have a weekdays and weekend setting too. More suggestions?

Is there any work around to heat the car in the morning without risking someone stealing the car by leaving the key in the car to avoid it to turn off? Can I leave the door open to keep the climate running? That is a contradiction except a bit of heat for happy birds I guess. I could leave a heavy stone in the driver’s seat, fooling the car to believe I am sitting there patiently…:-) . If anyone has defrosting & warming suggestions please let me know.

I have to read the manual a bit more to see if there is something I misunderstood about the Tesla user interface. If not this should be easy for Tesla to program. Please hurry up Tesla staff – I am freezing… :-)

The iOS app has gone a long time without an update, so hopefully we'll see some major changes soon. Those in the US with MC Red cars don't even have the correct car color displayed, which gives you some indication of how long it's been since the last update. This gives me some hope that a major revision is in process rather than simply some incremental tweaks.

I love the app so much. It's probably my favorite aspect of the whole ownership experience.

Anything Tesla does to improve the app is a complete bonus to me.

My car is Red and has displayed the correct color since I picked it up in May - that said, I am anxiously awaiting the 5.0 update (or whatever it will be called) to address such issues as vampire draw and other upgrades to make it more user friendly - that said, I can't wait to drive the car each day and am sorely disappointed when life dictates I must drive my truck - I hope your issue is rectified much sooner - I live in sunny CA so freezing my butt off is not an issue -

You mentioned leaving the door open. The car believes the door is open when you shut it enough for it to stay closed but while it is still slightly open. You will have a small opening for heat to escape but it is very minor. It actually appears closed to the casual observer. I haven't yet done that for heating but it works well for air conditioning. I personally do it to one of the rear doors as then the conditioned air will flow to the back of the car better.

@Michael: Red on the display or in the app? It's silver in the app since the MC red is newer than the most recent iOS version of the app.

If you have the old red, it will be correct in both.

I'm not sure what your problem is. Your car doesn't heat up when you use the app? Or is it that the 10-15 min that the app limits climate control not enough?

No, I do not believe the current climate control is enough. During winter, outdoor parked cars get a good layer of ice all over + snow. I would like to have two things in addition to current functions available:

1. Timer settings in the Tesla OS for pre heating (including Defrosting of front and back windows + mirrors)

2. Remote control from iOS/App of Defrosting of all, including seats.

I do think it is really cool to have a car with everything I need for defrosting/heating already built in to it. The only thing needed is a couple of minor software updates to make it work the way I like. (Timer and iOS/App) I really hope Tesla see that this software update is of MAJOR IMPORTANCE to do to before the winter start in their 2nd biggest market and in US. Even though I understand that my beloved car is born in the warm California, Tesla got the technology and knowledge needed to make it happen.

This could easily be done with a little scripting, the REST API, cron and curl.

@rdrcmatt: Not all of it. The app doesn't allow for defrosting or seat heating at all. You could use it to schedule climate control to correct the ambient temperature, though.

Take a look at VisibleTesla. It's a Java based GUI program that runs on pretty much all computers (that have Java). It performs all the same functions as the iPhone app and the latest versions have added graphing and a scheduling system that allows you to perform actions such as HVAC on/off and Charging on/off based on time of day.

There is also TeslaMS which allows you to control your car from the command line which you can integrate into some kind of scheduling function on your computer.

There are discussion at the Tesla Motors Club Forum for both programs at
VisableTesla
TeslaMS tools for telemetry data visualization

These tools owe a lot to the Tesla Model S REST API which was developed independently from Tesla.

@JohsMC : Am curious. What are you planning for winter tire/wheel set?

Better yet....
A 'Standby' button on the App. You can configure the 'Standby' to your personal preferences. In the morning (or whenever), just press the 'Standby' button and the car gets itself ready for you.
Heat the seats, defrost the windows, control climate, start the Keurig (sorry - Elon keeps forgetting to add that option) - all the settings can be preselected and changed as desired or with the season.

@JohsMC

+1

These are definitely much needed functions that need to be implemented soon.

Come on Tesla Team, winter is coming fast..!!

I believe someone TM said they're really focused on updates for the car software and we shouldn't expect any app updates anytime soon. That was about 2-3 months ago. I think it was a Q&A with Elon. I will try to find it. Anyway, I wouldn't expect an update to the app soon.

If you go with a 3rd party system, remember they can use your login information to get access to lots of other information on your car. Too risky for my liking.

The programs I mentioned above (VisibleTesla, TeslaMS) run on your own computer. They do not interact with any 3rd party servers and directly access only the Tesla servers, just like the phone apps do. They are no less secure than the phone apps. As a mater of fact, source code is available for the above software packages and you can examine them to see if there is anything nefarious going on (something you can't even do with the phone apps)

Scheduled climate control was something Tesla mentioned a long time ago, but they haven't talked about it in a long while.

For winter I belive he got the standard 19" with Nokian hakka R2

I'm getting standard 19" with studded Nokian hakka 7

@Alex K Thanks for the clarification, I was not aware of that. As I am not a programmer, I can't examine the code, but will take your word for it.

I got the Pirelli something because they was the best deal. I will drive carefully and do the Nokia later.
By the way. Thank you for the replies. I tried to install the visible Tesla And the Tesla MS but they are way to be IT complicated for me.

I will wait for Tesla to fix this in FW, SW and AppWare hopefully very soon. Please ask all Tesla people you meet to report a need for:
