I know there are a lot of SuperCharging + Battery posts---so sorry if this is a bit redundant....
I feel that the Battery is a Major component of the electric car....that will hopefully improve in technology in the near term.
And I think that Tesla's "sled" design for the battery location and configuration is the best for handling, repair/access and ultimate trade up to a new battery---hopefully of more modern and powerful design.
Right at the moment Tesla is offering Supercharging options for the 60 & 85Kw configured cars. They are not offering for the 40Kw cars....but I think this is shortsighted as in 3-5 years major advances in battery tech may be acheived...allowing the 40Kw cars to upgrade to 85Kw.
So for those that know---and Tesla Staff....
Can all the Model S cars be "equalized" in terms basic components to allow battery upgrades and supercharging?
Right now are the supercharging builds in the Car of the 60 & 85Kw----exactly the same?
Same wire gauge used, same components used? If not---why not? If not---what is the cost to upgrade the supercharging builds of the 60's to match the 85Kw? So we can upgrade/replace after a few years to an 85Kw or higher capacity battery?
Same questions for the 40Kw purchasers....can we who purchase the 40Kw battery pack have supercharging components and a confirmed and easy upgrade path in the car build for 60 & 85Kw batteries?
Some will say---well if you just will use the S for around town---just get the 40Kw and don't worry about it....but I would certainly like to know that the Model S as a car could be optioned with all the components for larger battery upgrades and supercharging for the future....for a cost that the purchasers can decide weather to upgrade or not.
To those that got the unhappy surprise about supercharging their 60Kw cars for $1K or 2K----how will you feel when/if you want to upgrade to the new 85Kw battery---that you cant---because the components or gauge of wire in the 60Kw will not handle the electrical load of the 85Kw pack.
And for Tesla---imagine how many more 40Kw cars will sell to customers---knowing that for an extra $2-4K (guessing price) they know their 40Kw cars can upgrade to 60+85Kw packs and supercharging as the need arises or they wish to sell their car---showing the purchaser this extra value vs it being a limitation.
