Given that next to driving, the AC seems to be the biggest drain on power, I'm curious how much power the car uses for AC when not driving. Anyone have any idea of this in terms of WH? I would assume it's about the same for all sizes of cars?
I don't know how much power the A/C draws, but this will give you a sense of how using it affects range at different temperatures.
On one of the forums, someone posted he ran the A/C all day at a car show and used 7 miles of range. That comes to like 5 cents an hour.... very efficient.
When I'm sat at the lights with A/C on I see about a 3KW draw, but it varies significantly. That would be about 6 times higher than @rdalcanto reports above. Obviously depends on outside temp and target temp. The 3KW number was with an outside temp of 87deg and a target interior temp of 75 deg, not long after setting off so the A/C was working hard.
Where are you seeing your draw? If I'm in D with creep on and my foot on the brake pedal, I see the Orange bar up a little on speedometer. Sitting here in Park it is horizontal, and total energy since last charge isn't changing and I've been parked waiting for my wife in 85 degree temps with AC set at 68 for at least 10 minutes.
I was stuck in a full on traffic jam on I-40 in New Mexico and sat for 45 min. with the AC on full blast and only lost two miles of rated range. Then I turned off the entire car, AC and everything for 15 minutes and lost an additional 12 miles when I turned the car back on. So, I'm of the opinion that the AC uses very little compared with the useage to turn the car on and get the batteries cooled or heated.
