Protean Electric makes in-wheel motors for EV's. Is that a better option than to use a motor between two wheels (Tesla Model S)?
Do you think that Tesla Motors will engineer these in-wheel motors for one of their future models? It might lead to more range using the same battery pack.

It could be adventageous in some ways, but increasing the unsprung weight (weight that is not supported by the suspension, like wheels and tires for example) negatively affects ride quality.
