Said GM's Reuss after winning the Detroit Auto Show Car of the Year award for the Cadillac ATS and speaking on the Chevy Volt:
"We'll get there," Reuss said. "We will see the day when we have an affordable electric car that offers 300 miles of range with all the comfort and utility of a conventional vehicle. We're talking about a transformation here. And transformation takes time."

I guess the only thing that saves that quote from being downright silly is the word affordable...

@sandman;

Yes! affordable is the key here. an $80,000 car is just not within reach of Joe car buyer with a family, mortgage, etc. Yes Model S is an amazing feat but if price were no object it could have been done years ago if there were as many eleventy zillionairs as there are average Joe car buyers that were willing to buy the technology.

Good news is, it is beginning to happen but let's face it BEV's are still plagued by current battery tech. and energy density problems that need to be overcome. The next generation battery tech. will likely be as expensive if not more so than L-Ion so the Model ?? of the future will probably be just as cost prohibitive when it hits the market. Even a HUGE breakthrough tomorrow in battery energy density would take decades to reach the economy of scale needed to become affordable to the masses.

There is no money in building such a car from the manufacturers standpoint if only a handful of people can afford it. It took many years before ICE's were affordable enough to become more than toys for the wealthy and for the supporting infrastructure to develop. The BEV we all seek could probably be built tomorrow but might cost well well into six figures perhaps seven.

I wish it could happen faster and in some ways it is but it is indeed lonely and often a painful wait living on the bleeding edge waiting for the other shoe to drop.
