Same motor on all MS?

Do all MS have the same motor and the only difference is the invertor on the P85? If so, theoretically a S60 can be tuned to perform faster than a S85 given the S60 has less weight.

S60 is limited by the battery. The bigger the battery the more power you can draw.

Yes and no. Yes, they all have the same motor. No, an S60 cannot be tuned to outperform a P85 because the battery pack cannot deliver the requisite amount of current regardless of the weight differential or inverter.

And S60 does not have less weight than S85 either. Tesla put dummy cells in the S60 battery pack so the car does not have to be certified again.

@stevenmaifert - I thought I'd read somewhere that the performance model came with a beefier inverter and a hand-wound motor...

@carlk - I had read that was the original plan, but believe they scrapped that and did opt for the lighter pack instead.

Unfortunately, I can't find any references to back up either of these claims. Can anyone else verify?

@GeekEV - The performance model does come with a beefier inverter. My point was whether you have the standard inverter or the one that comes with the performance model put in a 60, the battery can't put out enough power to out perform a P85 no matter how you may have that souped up 60 tuned. As for the motor in the P85 being hand wound; I don't have anything on that one way or the other, but I think if it were, it would be mentioned on the Options & Pricing page under the Model S performance column. Everything I've ever heard or read the last two years said same motor with high performance inverter for the P85.

How about the folks that have the S40? Since they have the same battery as the S60, they have the same performance as the S60?

Batteries stores charge or energy. A 60Kwh battery may be discharge in half hour delivering 120Kw or in 7 minutes delivering about 640 HP. Power output of a battery depends on the load. In the case of the MS, the inverter and the limits of the motor. If you don't believe me, put a short circuit with a 22 AWG wire across a nine volt battery and watch what happens.

@ouyeunj The 40s have the same performance as the 60s. Their charge capacity is limited, but output is not.

@July10Models, batteries have "C" ratings that tell us how fast the battery can be safely charged and discharged. Batteries have internal resistance and if you pull power out faster the temperatures go up faster until you burn your batteries up.

Steven has it right. I'd be very surprised if the motors are not identical.

The source of power (battery and drive inverters) distinguish the high power variants.

They pump more max current through the motor resulting in higher horsepower output.

Motors are not identical. P85 has a hand wound motor which allows for the difference between it and normal 85. During the tour and test drive last spring before the first production they showed the station where it is built. They even gave details of how many extra windings are achieved by hand compared to the standard machine wound design. Can't remember the exact number though.

gimp_dad - good to know from your firsthand observation, thanks for this. I am still surprised, but it does show TM is willing to pull out all the stops to maximize performance. An admirable quality of their team.
