Signature performance: spoiler or no spoiler?

I ordered my white signature performance witha spoiler. Now I'm having seconds thoughts. I think I got caught up in the moment (and I had my 18 year old son with me when I decided), but now I'm having second thoughts.
Is the spoiler douchey?
Probably too late to change (142) but thinking about it.
Any thoughts?

Spoiler. It is a @$%# performance!

I also am geting the Pearl White Signature Performance with the spoiler! I think it looks best on the Pearl White personally, gives it some true contrast in MHO. I also went with the dark 21" rims. I can't wait for mine and starting to get annoyed by all those who who I'm getting a Model S asking me, "when are you getting it?"

EDIT: who who = who know

It's supposed to be possible to remove the spoiler without damage by using dental floss. There are varying opinions, but it appears that the spoiler is just ornamental (kind of a check-box item because real sedans have a spoiler). So you can take it off later. I'd suggest not waiting too long though because it's likely that it will come off easy in the first few days but will get progressively harder to do as time goes by.

I'm going to have the Delivery Experience Specialist hand me the spoiler when he delivers the car. I don't think it is "douchey", but I don't think it adds to the look, nor help performance for the majority of driving situations. If I ever sell the car the next owner might want it.

The spoiler looks as if it were glued on to the car, which of course is exactly the case. ;-)

"When will you get your car?" is getting reallllly old.

@Teoatawki, totally is! It's practically a thorn in my side now when people ask. I want the damned thing so bad and I just have to wait. Waiting is so, unAmerican... :D

BYT: Ha! I ordered mine with the dark rims too, but chickened out and changed my order last month to the chrome 21" wheels instead (again, the 18 year old got to me). But, there is something cool about being a bit "understated" while you are blowing the doors off the completion.

I've looked at it in person and decided to remove. It serves no useful purpose and looks out of place with its carbon fiber "race car wannabe" attitude ;)
I think the carbon fiber air diffuser on the back is also being replaced by tesla since it didn't meet their expectations.
That leaves the interior carbon fiber accents which I was fine with.

Tomas, "But, there is something cool about being a bit "understated" while you are blowing the doors off the completion." That is cool, but on the other hand, maybe I watch to many nature shows but, a predator should look like a predator, as it's only fair to let your pray know that they may have bitten off more then they can chew.

Maybe my Model S should also have a black widow double red triangle on the rear to let those that I left behind know they just have been poisoned. At least I will not be since i don't have to smell all that exhaust they just spewed into the atmosphere! ;)

When am I getting it?
Who knows? .... and it's killing me.
I'd like to think that at 142 it should be soon, but I haven't heard a word from the folks at Tesla.
I'm beginning to think that there is some sadistic psychopath at Telsa who is getting perverse pleasure watching us all in these forums trying to figure out when our car will be delivered.

Tomas,

This is just the last 15 minutes before the end of the train ride. Not enough time to do anything and too much time to just wait patiently.

If you want to appear as anonymous as possible, go without the spoiler and the choose the 19" rims instead.
If not, go for the 21" AND the spoiler.
Which color are you going for btw?
I'm aiming for the Performance and always wanted a black car. The carbon fiber spoiler looks like it is not as noticeable on the black (I've not seen it in real life yet though).
On the white Model S it's obviously more visible. Now I'm even debating with myself to go for the white(!) because of the awesome contrast the carbon fiber details make.
Well, since I'm waiting for the European deliveries, I still have some time to decide.
The Model S still has a delicate design and the spoiler is far from "vulgar".

Most important though, don't let anyone else tell you what to do, but go with your gut feeling. I think you will enjoy your car either way.

Spoiler all the way with white. It's really subtle anyway. Why not get it? Great with dark rims. I don't think the spoiler looks bad on any color.

@Tomas - I've ordered Pearl White with dark wheels, but unlike @BYT I'm going with the Tan interior (and carbon fibre) to lighten up the cabin a bit.

I decided NOT to go with the spoiler. It doesn't add anything aerodynamically, and I think looks like an afterthought. I think the white car/dark wheels is a great combination of style and implied power/sportiness, and the spoiler is a bit too "ooh - I'm sporty".

The Model S is a pretty thing, why not spoil her with a Spoiler?

Is it really just glued on? Will it not fall off over time from hot/cold variations and just time? Adhesives never last forever!! A rep once told me (about 4 months ago) it's held on with 2 screws originally drilled into the rear of the trunk.

Yes Ben, some sort of two-sided automotive tape. Which is why it can be fairly easily removed or "reglued".

I asked the reps at Tesla HQ if the spoiler could be hand delivered and the reply was a firm no. If you want it you have to take it with it glued on to the car. So, I decided to take my Pearl White/Black leather with glossy obeche wood and Silver 21" wheels without the spoiler.

Grey with spoiler for me

What evidence do you have for the statement:
"it doesn't add anything aerodynamically"
Given the size of the spoiler, your statement might be a reasonable first guess.
I tried to get the salesman to give me a number for the effect on C_d, but all he could say was "increases the downward force by 70% above 70 mph." He claimed that the engineers said that they hadn't checked the effect on C_d, which is not plausible.

@kpister - check this thread, esp. the last post: http://www.teslamotors.com/forum/forums/rear-spoiler-details

@kpister
That sounds greatly exaggerated.
There's no way it could add 70% down force just based on its size and geometry.
The closest I can think of would be a spoiler on an E39 BMW M5.
The rear spoiler (full length of the trunk, that is larger than on model S) creates about 45kg down force maximum at 150mph.
Model S can't exceed 130mph if it wanted to ;)
There's no useful effect of the spoiler on the model S, just added drag.

BYT, Teo, Thomas;
"Are we there yet?"

"NO! Dammit!"

I tried to get the salesman to give me a number for the effect on C_d, but all he could say was "increases the downward force by 70% above 70 mph."

That sounds big, but unfortunately we don't know what the downforce is initially so can't really tell what it is.

If that statement includes mass, then 70% increase is huge and it will definitely impact range. Does anybody remember if Elon car has one? If it does and downforce impact is that high it could also explain why car&driver road test with that car didn't get nowhere near 300 mile range.

I also have a sig pearl white performance coming. I got the spoiler because I think it looks great on the white. Silver rims and no carbon fiber - went with lacewood. Wanted the white leather but went with black because my wife thought with our 4 boys, the seats would get awful dirty if white.

My opinion, keep the spoiler!

+1

mine = S1092 Pearl White, Sig Perf w/ Wht leather.

Delivery Date e-mail coming soon? When it does, Wiki 2nd post here:

http://www.teslamotorsclub.com/showthread.php/9489-Model-S-Delivery-Upda...

My Tesla specialist confirmed when I was configuring that the spoiler had no effect whatsoever on range or handling.

IF both kpister and Teoatawki are correct (or their Tesla representatives) then it just means that mass is not included in the 70% and there is practically no downforce whatsoever created by aerodynamics of the car.

Michael23,
I agree with your thoughts on color, spoiler, and rims. I'm thinking black roof/no pano. What are you thinking? Thanks!
