Very cool...for 1988. Really, I don't think I've ever dreaded having to actually open my door. I'm all for whizzbang gadgets, but I'm already sufficiently concerned re. my retracting door handles malfunctioning. Heaven forbid an entire door seizes! LOL
A bit simpler than Falcon doors for the X and look at the access!!!
Cool, but as kyleket states, the door handles are probably complicated enough.
Besides, the battery pack is going to make it complicated on the MS.....
I think it was the Road and Track review that said there's a "special place in Hell reserved for whoever designed the door handles"
OK, start the comments about "how am I going to up the door with a foot of snow on the ground???"
@shop, indeed, not just snow, how about uneven ground, I could just imagine some rock on the ground scratch the hell out of the doors.
If you watch closely, the door actually goes inside a contained compartment under the car. No possible contact with what is under the car. And it seems to follow its own footprint, so shouldn't hit anything like snow on side of the vehicle.
Hopefully there is an emergency release so the door drops.
Kinda cool, but can't imagine the mechanical problems you may incur.
It would seem to make more sense in an SUV chassis so you have more ground clearance.
Why on Earth do they demonstrate this in a wide open driveway?! Maybe show how it's great when parked in a super tight spot? Nevertheless, this seems like a genuinely bad idea...
They claim it takes less lateral space than sliding doors, as the double-hinge allows it to lift almost straight up at the height of the car body.
Very cool!! I like it. Thanks for sharing this.
A pps from the designers web site.
i still think it is cool. Something for Gen3?

They did show a tight space side by side and the woman walked to it and got in. There was no way she could have with a normal door space without serious door banging.
