Two Teslas - Suggestion for a HPWC with two connectors

Hi Everyone,

Just joined the Tesla family with my Sunset Red P85 a couple of weeks ago.
Everyone here knows how amazing the car is, so I won't go down that road :)

Putting down the deposit for an X for my wife. I'm certain that there will be many of us with two Teslas in the garage.
I'd like to suggest to Tesla a HPWC product with two charging connectors and the necessary software to manage 'smart' charging between two vehicles.

Jeremys the issue here is that one HPWC needs a dedicated 100amp breaker. Most residential power setups do not facilitate enough power nor can you install a 200amp breaker. The only way this would work is if you some how managed to get your state to permit a 200amp breaker on a residential home which is not likely as most of the inside wiring would not be rated for that high of a voltage.

Alternatively you could maybe do some kind of mini supercharger type setup. One that does not use as much power as a supercharger but is powered by a set of dedicated solar panels and independant from the house electrical system.

I am in the same boat. The wife wants a new ride soon but the Gen III we might consider will still need its own charging point. I suppose one could simply install two plugs or two HPWC on separate breakers.

ajamison: my apologies, I didn't explain clearly. I'm actually thinking that the HPWC could measure how much charge the two cars need and either a) split the 100A charge evenly (50A/50A) or distribute the charge based on how much each car needs (70A/30A) for the houses where one car is used more than the other.

I would think for the sake of convenience, as well as failover, you'd want two separate chargers. Two separate chargers allow you to have the cars in different locations if you want that. In addition, if one charger goes bad, you have the other one as backup.

Probably better to just install two 14-50 outlets, or one HPWC and one 14-50. The car controls when to charge and the charge rate, so just program them to start charging at different times during the night if needed to not overload the main service to the house or to take advantage of time of use rates.

There are lots of solutions for this with existing products. "Just two 14-50 outlets" is certainly fine.

But the original note is onto something. If you have two Teslas, with their own charge cable, they may very well charge both at the same time. If you do the manual work needed, you can tell them to charge at different times. But if you do that, and the one scheduled last needs a lot of charge and an early departure, it may not be fully charged in the morning.

Solution: make the two cars talk to each other. Given all the networking technology built into them, that requires no wires -- it just requires a bunch of software. Step 1: owner introduces the two cars to each other. Step 2: after that point, when both are plugged in to charge, they will charge at separate times, or cut back the charge rate to limit the total current. Override if necessary to be fully charged early enough.

(Oh yes, this ties into an earlier request: I don't want to tell the car when to start charging, I want to tell it when to be finished.)

For example, you might have two HPWCs each on a 100 amp circuit, so each could charge at the full 80 amp draw. But they would not draw that both at the same time if you set up the multi-Tesla charge preferences settings to say "don't do that".
