Panasonic IN on battery Gigafactory!

Electronics giant Panasonic Corp. is teaming with Tesla Motors Inc. to build batteries for the American electric car manufacturer.

Panasonic is expected to sign a contract this month to help Tesla construct a plant and produce batteries for its vehicles.

Initial operations at the plant are scheduled to commence in 2017 and become fully operational by 2020. The facility will produce batteries for 500,000 vehicles annually.

Awesome. I'm surprised Panasonic is only expected to invest $200 million of the $5 billion required. I wonder what other partners will be involved.

What does "more then" $200M mean?

Panasonic will invest more from the profits... same as Tesla. It is a gradual ramp up over 4 years.

Let's assume retail price is $150 per kWh and cost is $100 per kWh - so profit $50 kWh ( 30% gross margin )

2017 - 5 GWh = $250M profit... reinvest
2018 - 10 GWh = $500M profit... reinvest
2019 - 20 GWh = $1B profit... reinvest
2020 - 40 GWh = $2B profit...
...and the first GF is from now on is printing money.

And most of this money is spent building more GFs.
Possibly by 2030 they will have a surplus in battery manufacturing capacity for BEV cars.
Then they can build more GFs to build batteries for other things -- no end in sight.

Like Jerome said, "Growth, growth and more growth."

There's nothing quite as exciting as reckless growth!!

You can build more girlfriends?!?

It's interesting to see the MS with Japanese plate in the picture. It's still the LHD model though.

All rong! You don't get to buy and build with profits, unless using them to pay off the loan you got up front to build with. The production equipment etc. too. You may get to buy some of that on time, but basically the whole $5bn must be on the table before production starts.
