Elon takes on Virginia ... tweets for help

Elon just tweeted a few hours ago that Virginia DMV denied Tesla a dealer license! This is really bad for the people of virginia. Let's get organized and write to the DMV Commissioner, Governor and CC your Congressman and Senators. Other ideas? please post widely on FB/Twitter as well.

I live in Virginia --- this is a hotbed of old school tards.

You should see the old building NADA occupies --- the design fits in well with their outlook.

I'm not an attorney, but it seems to me that because many states require retailers to collect sales tax if they have a physical presence in their state, Tesla should refuse to collect sales tax in states that will not allow them to be there. The states with these dealership laws will stand to lose a substantial amount of tax revenue when Tesla customers purchase the cars on-line or in other states. Am I way off on this idea?

Good idea for things other than cars. Most states (maybe all) collect sales tax as part of the registration process. Without paying the sales tax no license plates.

@zjmo2
I believe Virginia collects Sales and Use Tax on vehicle sales for any vehicle being titled in Virginia (unless exempt, i.e. military personnel) regardless of where the seller is located.

I am not sure what is behind this position from Virginia. However, it is kind of silly. The store ("dealership") in question was going to be located in Tysons Corner, which is right off the beltway in he DC metro area. There already is a Tesla store in downtown DC (17 miles from Tysons Corner, VA). There is also a Tesla service center in Rockville, Maryland, across the bridge from Tysons Corner (19 miles away).

I wouldn't be surprised if Tesla opened a store in the Bethesda, MD area (one of the wealthiest areas in the country), within 10 miles of where Virginia turned down the Tesla dealership.
