Houston

I'm proud to be the 1st Tesla owner in Houston (at least according to this board and Tesla Owners Map).  Where better to showcase the merits of electric cars than the Energy Capital of the World!!

If I'm wrong, I'd love to meet any other owners who are incognito.

Houston Coffee and Cars is coming up again this weekend:

http://www.houstoncoffeeandcars.com/
https://www.facebook.com/coffeeandcars

NEXT GATHERING: MAY 4, 2013 Join us the first Saturday morning of May for our next gathering. From 8:00AM until 10:00AM at Vintage Park.

All are welcome to come by and attend. If you are bringing a Tesla, please try to arrive by 6:30am (!) so you can get a space and we can park together. We are now parking next to:

We Got Your Back Chiropractic - http://wegotyourbackchiropractic.com
110 Vintage Park Blvd. Suite D Building J
Houston, Texas 77070

If you PM me on Tesla Motors Club, I will send you my mobile number (in case you can't find us) and I can try to save you a space if you think you will be a little late. We will likely do the driveout at 9:30am so remember to set your active air suspension to LOW for that.

We hope to see you there! Especially if you have taken delivery of the new RED or have had some tinting or other customization you would like to show us--I know many are considering tint as the hot Houston summer approaches.

I will be there at 6:15 am and try to reserve some spots. However, if you know you will be coming, can you drop me a line and let me know? That way I will know how many spots to reserve. Thanks!

Texas Sales Tax Exemption

I just recently registered my S 60. Before registering my car, I was surprised at how unfriendly Texas is toward BEVs.

After a considerable amount of legal research, I found a Sales Tax exemption that I believe applies to the Model S. I asserted the exemption for my Model S. The exemption was granted, saving me about $5,000 in sales and use tax.

I am offering my services to anyone interested in asserting the exemption on a new registration. I am sorry, but the exemption is not available if you already registered your car. Information is available on my website http://www.shooperlaw.com/TeslaSalesTax.htm

stephen pace: i plan to be at HC&C tomorrow morning, save me a spot!!! I TSLA

shooper: where were you when i went thru hell with the registration process!!! i even paid a $300 penalty because it took so long to get everything they wanted in order to get my S registered. the only good part was at least i was able to claim the sales tax on my tax return and so i was able to get some relief on federal taxes...

@SHooper: If this works, you should post it over on TMC as well. I'm sure any future Texas Tesla owner would want to know about it.

Has anyone in Houston done/considered a speaker upgrade? I was reading on the main forum about people in CA who have done it but curious to see if anyone here has done it.

Ok, so update from 03/21/2013 - that's when our car was damaged- it is still at a service center , waiting for the parts. :( 2 months and counting......

One of these days I may try an Austin to Houston trip, especially when we have a Supercharger enroute. Any recommendations for places to charge in Houston? Is there a HPWC at the Galleria and/or service center? Hotels with charging stations?

I have the Plugshare, Recargo, Chargepoint, and Blink apps.

Thanks.

John Kingman

@John: Yes, the Galleria has a Roadster HPC with a Model S adapter and there is reserved Tesla parking in the Galleria green garage near the Tesla store. There is a Westin there near the store in the mall, and there are tons of other hotels within walking distance of there. If you wanted to stay elsewhere in the city, there are Blink and other chargers everywhere (but you usually have to pay) and eVgo (but you need a monthly membership, so not really Tesla friendly at this point). I have never found a charger in the wild that was greater than 30amps in the city, but I admit I haven't looked very hard. Just use the apps you mentioned and you should be fine. Give me a call when you come in. :-)

Thanks, Stephen. Will do.

NEXT GATHERING: June 1, 2013 Join us the first Saturday morning of June for our next gathering. From 8:00AM until 10:00AM at Vintage Park.

All are welcome to come by and attend. If you are bringing a Tesla, please try to arrive by 6:30am (!) so you can get a space and we can park together. We are now parking next to:

@SHooper, regarding Texas Sales Tax Exepmtion - figure out a way to make it retroactive and I'll give you double or triple! I heard you (or somebody) talking about an exemption at the Tesla Service center about a month ago - I was certainly intrigued, but your conversation was beyond the limits of my prying ears.

@kjo - I was stranded at work during the rainstorm (medical center area). The water rose quickly around my car and was compelled to drive in through the high water to higher ground. The car drove fine throughout; however, later that night when I needed to go back to work, I found the tail lights on and I couldn't get it out of park (and into drive/reverse). I had it towed to the service center where they told me water had infiltrated the interior through the front end (the floorboard was slightly damp underneath the top carpet pad). The final bill was $4500 (insurance covered) about half of which was diagnostic. They also told me that there was one other car in for flood damage. In my opinion, the car fared poorly in the high water compared to other cars I have driven on Houston's flood-prone streets. On the plus side, my car works fine now; and, it appears replacing affected modular components in an EV is better than chasing electrical issues in an ICE car.

@Weston, did you raise the suspension to "Very High" before going through the water?

don't we need a "Very High and Dry" setting???

@riceuguy & bp - yes I did & yes we do. I saw somewhere on this forum thread, someone posted that early production cars are more sensitive to water. Mine is P01811 - perhaps that is the issue, although no one in the service center mentioned anything of this nature. I would hope the service center corrected the 'sensitivity' issue, if that was possible - I will have to ask next time I speak with them.

so the battery bay was still dry and it was the components that failed? i guess that is something of a good thing. thanks for letting everyone know how this worked for you.

If anyone is around next Wednesday, June 19, 2013 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, MIT Enterprise Forum is having a seminar on "Alternative Fuels: The Future of Transportation":

Federal Reserve Bank
1801 Allen Parkway
Houston, Texas 77019
(free parking at Taft Street Parking lot)

It sounds like they hoped to have a Model S there, but I can't make it. If you are interested in attending, please drop me a line.

If anyone is interested in getting their Tesla Opti-Coated, I highly recommend John Gray of Car Art.

I got my whole car opti-coated.
Opti-Coat pro for all painted and plastic surfaces. Got the rims done too.
Opti-Glass pro is great for the windshield; go over 35mph and never have to use your wipers again.
Opti-Lens pro has UV inhibitors that will prevent your headlights from turning yellow.

His prices can't be beat! $375 if you just need opti-coat pro. $475 if you need pre-polishing too. Compare to $605 at EVS motors.
Why the huge difference in price? John is a weekend detailer who works out of his Garage. EVS has high overhead.

Here's a picture of my Model S after opti-coat.

Very clean and bright

If anyone is interested in getting their windows tinted, I highly recommend the Solar Adaptive Transition SAT tint exclusively at EVS motors. It's the most advanced tint with the highest heat rejection.

I posted this on the Tesla Model S forum but thought they would appreciate it being posted here for fellow Houstonians.

Nice! I still need to get mine tinted. S car go- mine is white too. :). I saw another white one at central market, maybe that was you.

In the past 2 or 3 months I have been seeing new tesla's all over the place! There was on in my neighborhood (Bellaire), one pulled up next to me at a stoplight yesterday on Holcombe,, there are 3 in my parking garage and another two that I see in the rice village/ west u area. Maybe I just wasn't seeing them before, but it's great to see so many around.

I'm still looking for a sound system upgrade if anyone has attempted that in the Houston area.....

There will be another one soon on Birch St in Bellaire - getting blue/tan 85 Tues afternoon!

Never drove one before we picked it up. Not news here, but it really is awesome!

kjo,
That's a lot of Teslas that are around you. I've only seen one in the wild before I got mine. Have yet to see another since. Haven't gotten to the stereo yet, probably last on my mods. Let me know what you do. I want a bit more base and was thinking of putting woofers in the rear seat well.

moorelin,
Congrats! Yes, they are awesome! Nice color combo. I like the tan interior, it contrasts nicely with the black carpet and plastics.

Stopped by the Tesla Gallery this evening--looks like they are in the midst of a test drive event (this weekend and next), so if there are some folks that want a test drive, no doubt one could be arranged. Interestingly one of the two cars they have doesn't have air suspension. I'd be tempted to drive just to see how that feels.

That might have been me at Central Market 'kjo'. I've also seen several in the Village where I live as early as December, and saw another in Montrose last night for the gay pride parade...definitely an upsurge in sightings lately. My new 'Don't Tread on Me' plates have arrived at the dmv, too (still need to pick them up) 'EGO 85' - a nice play on words, I think.

Is there a Houston Coffee and Cars is this weekend 7/6?
I can finally attend so I hope there is.
http://www.houstoncoffeeandcars.com/ still says the next event is June 1st! LOL
John the Opti-coat guy said he'd also like to attend.

Yes, there is. I plan to post later today to remind people to attend.

Houston Coffee and Cars is again this weekend--we only had ONE Tesla at the last event (thanks Jerred!), so we hope to do better this time, despite the holiday weekend. Did you just get your car in the last month or two? Would you like to meet some other owners? Would you like to share your love of Tesla with others? Then come on out!
