Old car versus new Tesla

I'm curious as to what everybody else is transitioning from and how it affected the ownership experience.

I currently drive a 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid. It's been a great car as far as reliability... no surprises and I'm at 175k miles. But it's so underpowered that it requires a particular habit to remain safe - I have to think and plan at every merge situation on the road because the acceleration is so bad. I have to make sure when turning onto a busy road that I have a ton of room behind me... this car is perpetually floored when not cruising. Things get a little better when its batteries are happy and assisting with power.

I'm going P85+, so the juxtaposition here is going to be comedic.

Keeping the Civic though, if for no other reason than to remove the IRS requirement of a mileage log for a business owner. With two cars, you can declare on personal and one business and forget the log.

Acceleration will not be a problem. You will be able to merge pretty much whenever and wherever you want. You'll never drive your civic again. Happy motoring!

Similar situation: going from 2006 Honda Accord w/ 115k miles that still runs like day 1. I do drive wife's 328xi, but and MS will blow that away.

Well, anything but straight line acceleration of the MS will not be any match to my RS5. Especially on wet or bad roads with the unbeatable quattro. I will miss it in the winter I guess. Same is true for some of the assistance systems, interior quality, etc.

But, the RS5 is a free breathing V8 high rev. using 15 Liters of fuel per 100km, and I decided it will be the last dinosaur of that kind I bought. The MS comes closest to being an acceptable alternative. Still I know that in the RS5 I will drive circles around the MS on the Nordschleife, and yes I will at least try to get to a 9, 8:30 or so in the unmodified MS in a few laps. But then it will be retired right away from the track and I will potentially get a used Caterham for fun.

I have Nissan Altima year 2000 with 143K miles on it. I was planning to move to Mercedes but now have changed mind and will be ordering Tesla in a month or so. I had Honda Accord before. I also have Honda Odyssey for long trips with family and kids. I have a teenager in family who has to learn driving and so am thinking to keep Nissan for sometime and make her learn on Nissan.

Teenagers should learn to drive electric... a used Leaf would be an idea. Best we can do for the environment is to tech our kids that there is an alternative to the stink and noise.

I traded in a 2004 Prius with 36821 mi because I like the ideas and commitment of Tesla. Like Ollie I feared merging onto highways at full stops or slow speeds from short entry ramps. I'm 6'2" so the additional leg room is thoroughly enjoyed. I was one of the first in my area to own the 04 Prius and wanted to experience the "wow you have one of those" moments again. And to be part of the wave that takes the technology and business paradigm to the next level.

Went from Prius to MS. Yes the difference in acceleration experience is comedic. I'm now disappointed when I approach a merge lane and there's no competing traffic. Also I would never use the cruise control in the Prius because I seriously thought the engine would explode trying to maintain 65 mph up a steep hill.

Good car nevertheless.

I sold my 2007 Prius and now have a P85. Wow, what a difference! Now, instead of avoiding becoming a road pancake I can pretty much do whatever I want.

98 Accord with ~250k miles... still thinking about making the plunge on a Model S. Felt the car was out of my price range, but thinking about TCO, it seems more reasonable.

07 Accord Hybrid 60,000 miles. Unlike the Civics, this Model was designed for power over mileage (probably why it never sold too well). No complaints about the Accord, other than gas use. Keeping it for now and maybe for the kids, although that's still a long way off.

Word of warning to those changing over: the new ability to accelerate beyond your previous wildest dreams can be dangerously intoxicating. To wit: at intersections ahead, cars will pull out in front of you because they will not believe anything can reach the intersection they are entering at such a speed. Same thing with cars changing lanes ahead of you. Accelerate, by all means, but watch out for those entering the empty spaces you plan to (rapidly) occupy.

Surprise yourself: don't surprise them.

We replaced a 2005 VW TDI with 90k miles. We have had TDIs since 03, often filling with biodiesel. Great gas mileage too (45-55 mpg). We'd been eyeing electrics and after test driving a few we finally test drove the TMS. Put our deposit down that day and sold the TDI the day after T arrived! If we can, we will never buy an ice car again.

2006 BMW 760i, 125000 miles.
Learned battery car with 2011 and 2012 Nissan Leafs and kept the BMW for road trips.
Went Tesla for the range. Keeping the BMW for road trips until the super charger network gets more built out.

Now I find myself frustrated that I have to drive the BMW next week.

We sold our Lexus 400h, Porsche boxster, classic corvette...I cant remember what they were like..the transition has been so mind blowing, I cant remember what my other cars were like..Im in a fog.. still...Oh yes, the corvette was loud...

@Calover... "can't remember", that's funny. I'm sure the vette was loud; you have to admit that in a parallel universe where Tesla doesn't exist that the new C7 is pretty sweet.

I'm giving up my beloved Lexus GX 470. Had many a good time with the kids in that thing. If the Model S hadn't come along I probably would have kept it forever. It's gonna be nice not giving those greedy SOB's at Exxon any more of my money. They only THINK they have us over a barrel (no pun intended).

I am coming from a 1997 Dodge Viper. While my P85 won't touch in high speed acceleration (8 liter V10), looks, reliability or exclusivity, it will seat 5 and have far superior luxury and MPG! And no more smog checks or 9 quart oil changes. Really looking forward to it.

I am currently trying to sell a 2013 Volvo S60 T6 so I can buy a Model S, is if anyone is looking for a great second car I got one.

2005 Mercedes CLK500 Convertible -- 128K

I gave up my very first car EVER! 1994 Honda Accord. Bought it used in 1997. Unsure about miles as the speedometer broke 10 years ago. Back then too poor to fix the speedometer and by the time I could the car was too old and not worth it. I would have to estimate there was 250,000+ miles on it.
it was a great car and I miss it for the memories but looking forward to making new memories with the Tesla! Never would I have spent this much money on an ICE car!

I've been driving a Mercedes SLK 320 2-seat convertible for the last dozen years. I really have no need for four doors, or even four seats, I can walk to work and I've done 120,000 km (75,000 mi) in 12 years.

So I have absolutely no need for a large, car that's economical to drive.

But the test drive was just so much fun and I can't wait until delivery next month.

The Mercedes will have to go because I just don't have space to keep it.

2000 Mercedes E320 4Matic with 140,000 miles and decided to keep it for winter and an "airport car". It has been very reliable and is great in the snows of Colorado. Tess will stay in a warm garage when the flakes fly.

@dkingsland Like you I have no need, and no love, of anything with more than two doors/two seats but I think I will cave in very soon especially when one of my best friends just place an order and after the parking sensor and folding mirror became available.
