A suggestion to make Supercharging more efficient

Hello Everybody,

I am new here. 6 months ago I haven't heard of Tesla, but ever since I have seen one, I am an enthusiast. I bought some stocks and I am hoping to buy one with the profit :)

I am glad to see that Tesla is taking off and it is nice to see that so many people share my vision of the future.

Having said that, the reason I signed in is because I wanted to make a suggestion.
I love the pictures of the superchargers. They are classy like everything about Tesla, including its CEO.

But I think, if it takes 30 minutes to charge a car, with the increasing volumes of Teslas on the road, 3-4 stalls per station will not be enough. Imagine having millions of Teslas needing charging (and the other electric cars Tesla will sell possibly electricity to), there would be simply too big a lineup at every station.... It would be a shame if this would cause some problems in the future.

This is when I thought that what I would do is to make it a little less fancy, but more efficient. The cars would be parking at a curb, lined up behind each other. The charging cables would be either pulled out of the ground next to the cars, or there would be some simple dispenser line, where you could park next to one, pull out the charger cable and stick it in the car.

The advantage would be that you could charge many more cars simultaneously AND it would be DISPENSABLE, depending on demand.

Genius as Elon Musk is, I am sure he has already thought of this. I just thought I'd draw the attention to the need of expanding the capacity of the Supercharging stations.

I don't know how to edit this. I have mean EXPANDABLE instead of dispensable.

The cords must be fairly short, since they carry so much current, and are quite thick and heavy. TM's plan for handling demand is to add units wherever lineups occur.

Thanks Brian, it was just an idea. I can see the future when every single car will be electric, and we will need a very efficient way of charging them. But by that time they will come up with a solution that will charge a battery in a few minutes.

I'd rather they add more SCs rather than increasing capacity at SCs.

@EvaP - I fail to see the difference to the current setup. Cars are parked parallel and pull a cord out of the station. Millions of Teslas will not be on a road trip at the same time. Over time Tesla will up enough stations by either increase the number of stalls at a location like done at Harris and needed for Gilroy or opening twins station like Darien.
When I grew up how many times did we run out of gas because we couldn't find a gas station? Bottlenecks will go away driven by demand.

Since Tesla knows where the superchargers are and their capacities and it knows the locations of the Model S cars and their charge levels, they could extend the on board navigation software to predict supercharger usage - and project potential wait times for superchargers.

This would be much better than just providing a webcam or indication of which supercharging stations are currently being used - since they actually have the data to predict usage based on the vehicles that are currently on the road, headed to the supercharging station, and likely to stop to get a charge.

The KISS solution is expanding supply until demand is met. Elon says construction, power, maintenance, and rent costs are no obstacle to doing that.

People focus on range, but faster charging and having nearby charging facilities is more important. This also minimizes the waiting in line issue.

An advantage to flywheel power is that they could be spun up by compressed air. Supercharging stations with no wires except to run the compressor. This might be a very fast way to charge up.

If you think people are worried about electricity, try multi-000 rpm flywheels.

Only if one explodes and kills people. Otherwise nobody will worry about it any more than they worry about their gas tanks blowing up.

Whirring flywheels are way cooler than batteries, but it really seems that battery technology is progressing at about the same dismal pace. Not impressive, but Tesla and others will likely stick with the tried and true.

I have rather more than "dismal" faith that many or some of the major laboratory advances already achieved will get into production.
