Questions About The Model S

Some questions about the Model S......................

1. What would its range be on the Autobahn with the A/C on at 120 MPH?

2. What's its towing capacity?

3. Is the A/C compressor powered by the battery pack or is there an alternator run off the motor for that?

4. How does the heater generate heat? Is the battery pack the basic heat source or something else?

Why is this here, and not in the Model S forum?

3) that doesn't make sense. Everything is powered by battery in Model S. It is BEV. You are asking if there is alternator run off the alternator for that. AC induction motor is basically a big alternator.
4) AFAIK resistive heater & heat pump & residual battery heat when applicable.

1. no A/C needed on the Autobahn - if you sweat it is because you are driving too fast
2. a sports sedan is not a truck - check other offerings
3. A/C runs off electricity and that comes from the main battery. But it is small compared to moving the car. 3 hrs standing in blistering heat and you lose 10-20 rated miles. Done that.
4. Inverter waste heat plus electrical heater. Heating is more energy hungry then A/C, but I haven't tried because it is not that cold in CA.

1) bit difficult to say. We tried to go that fast on Autobahn, however due to the trafic we could sustain that speeds only for a brief moments so our average speed was around 90-100mph (150-160km/h) and range was surprisingly good, definitely more than 200km, more like 300km. We didn't use A/C at that time I think.
2) no towing, but you can buy 3rd party solution for Model S

Air resistance grows in square of speed, so difference between 100mph and 120mph is a lot more than 20% drop in range. Though, if your experience says that 100mph gives you about 190miles I don't think my guestimate is correct either. 120-150miles maybe? A/C effect in that speed is tiny anyway (120mile range at 120mph speed is one hour of driving, IE. maybe 3-6 miles max.)

well, in theory (didn't try that), according to this video he was using around 80kW power for 133mph. So one hour of 80kW is 80kWh (full battery) which means you would go 133 miles (212km).
However these are pretty teoretical conditions I guess. I'd like to see flat road where you can drive one hour with this uninterrupted speed :D
Also in this speed it is difficult to use only regenerative breaking, because you usually need to slow down more rapidly due to the trafic.

Legally probably nowhere, but there are couple of roads here in Finland where you could do that in nighttime, and I bet some of the roads in mid-US where roads are basically planned using a ruler over a map have way longer straights than that. In Western Europe it is hard to find long enough road section that isn't interrupted by city or two. Too crowded.

Please go easy on our (probably) European friend. I have to give the Europeans credit over Americans for using trailers for light duty hauling with their car instead of expecting everyone to own a truck for those occasional jobs. Since most people can't afford more than one vehicle, it means that many Americans end up using their truck as their primary driving car which is horribly inefficient. If more Americans would tow with their cars instead of commuting with a truck we'd waste a whole lot less oil.

Because of the afore mentioned wind resistance, every doubling of speed takes four times as much energy. Therefore, one could logically conclude that your range at 120mph would be 25% of what it would be at 60mph (which is roughly what the rated range was tested at, 62 mph IIRC). For a 60kWh pack rated at 208 miles that would be 52 miles, for an 85kWh rated at 265 it would be 66 miles. But that's all theoretical. YYMV.

You forgot ancillary and rolling resistances from that. Actual wind resistance curve is less radical. IIRC wind becomes dominant only after 50mph or so.

You may not be able to do it legally, but I-70 through Kansas is about as straight and flat as it gets. You could easily get that speed, for that distance as long as you find a time where there are no other cars, and no cops :D

(I have also gotten a good bit of speed in the past on I-35 between Wichita, Kansas and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma)

hmm, ok. But there is no way to find such road here in Europe :)
On Autobahn you can do it legally, but it's difficult to maintain such speed due to the traffic.

However I'd really like to visit US one day...

One hour at 120mph is just 120miles. You can find such empty roads in eastern Finland. I once did a road trip over Finland and one road near Russian border (was Soviet Union back then) had a sign "shop 50km". I thought that's funny until I had driven over a hour past it without seeing any sign of civilization (except that road). There was one mailbox, but no road indicating any house anywhere.

Danger in those roads are basically moose going thru your windshield seeking for closer friendship. Maybe a bear. A bit northern, reindeers.
