Itinerary Recommendations: Seattle -> SF

If my car comes before Christmas, I'm hoping to drive down to the San Francisco Bay Area from Seattle. Has anyone done this in a Model S (85kWh, single charger)? Can you recommend reasonable places to stop and get a charge, including hotels with chargers? I'd like to do it in three days, if possible, and I won't hit a supercharger until Folsom.

I was thinking that the first day I might be able to make it as far as Eugene or Roseburg, Or., stopping along the way for a few hours to add the necessary miles. So where to stop, and where to stay in Eugene or Roseburg? Etc.

Any help would be appreciated, including pointing me to a more appropriate forum.

I would stop in Woodburn. In the west side of I-5 just south of the outlet mall Elmer's restaurant has an EV charging station. The Owner is a Model S reservation holder as well. You can shop and/or eat while the car charges.

Bonnie1194 at TMC did a blog about the trip and it has some great tips.
It is more than just recommended charging stops. I think it is a must read.

Thanks. I also was directed to Tom Saxton's blog via the NW Tesla Owners group on Google Groups. These are helpful.

However, I'm beginning to regret not getting the twin chargers, as a number of these charging stations are 70A.

Add the second; that can be done.

Echoing Captain_Zap, check out Bonnie1194's blog here: http://www.teslamotorsclub.com/entry.php/2-Roadtrip-Sacramento-ish-CA-to... Lots of good info there as well as ChadS' comments below the blog. Good luck and have fun!

Thanks. I do notice that most of the chargers that she used along the "Tesla Highway" are Roadster chargers. Unfortunately, TM will not sell those adapters except to Roadster owners. I'm not seeing a lot of 70 amp J1772 charge stations (and I don't have the twin chargers to take advantage of them anyway).

I heard that an S owner can buy one for $650. Like DouglasR I will only need it between Seattle and Folsom. Maybe Tesla should have these available at the rosdster chargers so S owners could use them.

The trouble is the HPC network is designed to cope with 2K Roadsters. The MS numbers will swamp that in no time.

It would fill in some of the gaps until the Superchargers are in place.

I would get a roadster adapter if I could. I'd be using it a couple times this month if I had it.

A fair tradeoff would be HPCs at SC stations. 1 per station. Would also function as an overflow when SCs were backed up.

I think it would be great if TM had a program to rent or lend the adapters. We wouldn't need them that often.

Out at our local store, we have a couple roadster chargers, but it's apparent that the with no roadsters in sight and lots of S models in the future, it would be a shame to not use them.

I asked the rep, who offered that we could purchase an adaptor for 700 bucks. My counter was, how about chaining the adapter to the charger? Did not seem to get anywhere with that one.

@jbunn,

What store was that? Do you think he was serious about selling one?

It was in Bellevue, but it was about 4 months ago. I found it ridiculous that Tesla was not making their public roadster chargers upward compatable for the new S.

Look at it this way. In about 2 more weeks there will be more S on the road than roadsters. Every 6 weeks more S will be released than the entire roadster production line.

It's not the S owners that should be purchasing adapters for the roadster chargers at the Tesla stores. It's the roadster chargers that should be adapted to be upwardly compatable.

Dang, I even looked to see if the plugs could be purchased and custom adapters made up, but no dice. Really, the whole "charger" thing is overdone anyway, since the S has the charger onboard. All we really need is a 10 dollar outlet. All these propriatry connectors make this much more difficult than need be.

Many of the 70 amp chargers along the "Tesla Highway" (Vancouver to San Diego) were donated and/or funded by Roadster owners. They are still thinking about upgrading them to HPWCs, but not until they can get HPWCs to work with the Roadster. There is currently a problem with charge stations over 70 amps.

In any event, several kind Roadster owners offered to lend me an adapter. Now I'm trying to find out if I can upgrade to twin chargers after delivery.
