I signed yesterday and were up to 2400. I sent the link and a message to my friends and family, hopefully a few will sign it. I suggest all of us on the forum do the same!
I think I have signed one of these every month. You read the commits on it at Facebook and almost everyone supports it. It's just not getting to enough people.
Anyone have some spare cash to run a huge ad campaign on Facebook? I don't know why Tesla hasn't done this every time a petition like this has come up.
@sudre its so disorganized and then you have the people who are too lazy to sign it because they think everyone else will sign
Some thoughts: while what you are doing is laudable, even if the petition reaches 100,000 people--there isn't much that the White House can do since this is a state, not federal issue. I don't think there is an easy fix through federal legislation and even if there was--the fix would take a considerable amount of time. On the plus side, there is a way that the readers of this forum can be effective--call your state representative. If you are buying a Tesla, then you are probably someone of influence in your local community (even if you don't know it)--call your representative and lobby them--they are there to serve you. Note, ending the dealership system is unlikely--however, maybe there is a middle ground--EVs can be sold directly by the manufacturer. This way the dealers aren't directly threatened and Tesla can be exempted. There is a good public policy justification for exempting EV cars given that selling and buying an EV car is pioneering and risk decision and weighing a company down with a dealership structure would only discourage EVs. Tesla should work on a 50 state strategy in the state legislatures--otherwise they will be fighting a defensive action across the country. I hope this helps.
@rtb - Congress could easily fix this, since they have the power to regulate interstate commerce, which this is. Of course, Congress doesn't seem able to pass anything these days, so as a practical matter, you are right.
One thing the administration could do, if it had the cojones, would be to have the Justice Department challenge some of these state laws as a burden on interstate commerce. The FTC might also come out against them. But I agree with you that the most likely path to success is local pressure. Kind of hard to outweigh the dealers associations, though.
I think if the carveout was EV only the dealers would have a much harder time fighting this. I agree that Congress could pass a law but think of the other entrenched interests that would weigh in--for example beer distributors, which operate on a system like car dealerships.
but the petition isn't necessarily about getting congress to fix the issue. Small steps its about getting attention on the issue and we can't even muster up 100,00 sigs for a small victory(getting the white house to respond on the issue)
8500... looks like we'll hit 10k before 11 o'clock news (west coast)
+1 from Canada ;-)
I emailed the White House and told Obama to help us with this. You never know!
If we keep up the rate of today, the petition will hit around 75,000...
If there is just 100 more sigs per hour, it'll hit 100,000!
keep it up everyone out there!!!
Wonder if Tesla Stores can post this petition on a screen in the back for visitors to sign?
i know many politicians have tried to throw Tesla under the bus notably Mitt Romney calling tesla a failed company. Has there been any that have publicly supported Tesla I haven't heard President Obama mention Tesla or anyone from his administration for that matter. Thinking about it even further most of the things I read about Tesla the articles usually try to put a negative spin on Tesla's progress as a company.
Calling your state representatives is probably the best thing you can do, in terms of effort to payoff. It really does make a difference, no matter who you are. I've talked to a lot of politicians and they really do take phone calls like this into account.
9500... gonna hit 10,000 before the end of the Stanley Cup post game show!
10,000 sigs by the 11 o'clock news... Awesome!
Anyone giving a count, please mention the time.
