To upgrade to 5.8 or stay at 4.5, that is the question

I have 12k miles on my Model S VIN 98xx. It has been flawless and amazing. When the flurry of updates came out a few weeks ago, I held off from updating. The vampire drain doesn't bother me that much and I don't need tethering. It bothers me to no end that Tesla decided to remove the low suspension setting for a "possible" (and improbable) safety issue. Each morning I happily dismiss the offer to upgrade when I get in my car.

So here is my question: how many of you would downgrade all the way to 4.5 if you could? How many of you are happy with the 5.8 software and why?

I am leaning towards waiting until they restore the low uspension option in "January."

Currently have 5.6 and plan on waiting until after my extended road trip where the lower setting is beneficial to total miles! Jan promise of a setting fix is just around the corner.

Have two cars, both upgraded to 5.8. VIN 97XX , S85 and VIN 246XX, P85+.

Have not had any issues whatsoever with the upgrades. Many things work a little better, GPS especially.

The ride height is a non issue. Can't tell a bit of difference. To be honest I never liked having it lower without my permission. Just to much crap dropped on the roads. I find I don't tense up when a tire gator appears out of nowhere laying sideways in the middle of the road.

I prefer riding a little higher and haven't noticed any change in range or ride comfort at all. I would upgrade and move on. It's not a big deal.

I upgraded to 5,8, just assuming it was natural for everyone to do so (had my MS for just 2 months-so, a newbie). However, I have noticed that ever since the upgrade, the GPS has a really hard time recognizing my location near my house. I frequently find my location 1-3 blocks away (just tonight it showed my going 90 degrees different than my real direction). As a result, my home link frequently does not show up. My kids were LOL when they saw my car icon spinning around in my driveway when I was 1/2 mile away.

Didn't you just post this in a different thread? There was a couple responses.

I like the 5.6 and 5.8 because of the highly improved nav and vampire drain. Rated range has dropped. There has been a lot of fuss about the suspension. Most of it relates to us having our rights taken from us. Perhaps I don't have the expertise but most of my driving is freeway and I haven't noticed any difference in the performance or battery efficiency. If I didn't read the boards I wouldn't no the difference. So no complaints here with 5.8

@tchsurg My navigation is perfect and has always been. Perhaps a reboot is in order.

I'm in the same boat as the OP. Still on 4.5, expecting a long road trip in December. With all the talk about the possibility that we may never get the level of lowering back that we had before, I've decided to hold off on accepting the update. I don't expect to be able to do this forever but I think I'll at least wait to see what happens in January.

Don't clutter with dupe posts.

On 5.8 and would not down grade. I like the newer nav function, screen an wiper cleaning, wifi, more accurate range calc, not sure when adj charge limit was added and I'm sure I've missed something. I would like to lower during extended highway driving but I don't do that so often that I couldn't wait till January.

Upgrade is the answer. :)

So the only difference between 5.6 and 5.8 is the changed ride height transitions.

How do I manually start the update? no longer getting the prompt to upgrade and the software version is still the one that came with the car we bought a couple months back.

Oh and the VIN is 21665

It wasn't an issue for me as I rarely drive above 65. If you want the lower level for energy saving, slowing down probably would do a lot more for you.

Be Safe! Upgrade your car and move on!!!

Eliminating vampire drain is alone enough justification. There are many refinements that don't make it into release notes, such as reduced minimum speed for cruise control, smoother cruise control, improved nav, etc. Lowered suspension loss is a minor and temporary issue in my opinion, cured by a few second burst to 98 mph when I am driving a long way. I do care about getting it back, but wouldn't trade back the other new features.

Upgrade.
Map improvements and wifi support are definitely worth it.
Deep sleep mode is also properly implemented now.

PD;
+1
Again.

"To 4.5, or not to 4.5, That is the question.

Whether it is nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of 5.8, or to take arms against a sea of troubles, and by opposing them, end them?"

I could continue, but I think that William S. has pretty well done the research here.

@ Neige
Bite the bullet and install all updates regardless of their anomalies, and stay current.

Or live in the past.

Vqazi, a service center can certainly push the update for you, and customer service should probably be able to push update remotely.

upgrade and move forward from there - not a difficult decision

Also waiting on the vampire loss fix to be properly implemented on the MS60.

Since I feel unconcerned about the low suspension setting I upgraded immediately. I would do it again, too.

Vampire drain is much better as is the navigation. Slacker also seems much, much improved.

Thank you for your hard work, Tesla.

I have a P85 and I have had the update for about a week or so. I travel 180 miles between home in VA in my home in PA. Used to make the 180 miles and have 50-70 mi/charge remaining since the update, I made the trip and the range was 9 mi/remaining. Wh/mi went from normal 331/wh/mi to 416/wh/mi. Also I used to charge to a rated range of 262 now only able to charge to 255. Something with the new algorithm is not right. I am disappointed at this recent update. I do like the updates to the wifi, nav, and radio display. Tesla fix the algorithm or explain how I lost total charge and am now all of a sudden driving at such a higher wh/mi. They temp has been much colder, however last December I made the first long trip and had 50 miles at the end started at 27F and ended 35F.

Map improvements are great. no longer back up to iPhone. Wifi downloads make the OTA process much easiser.

Thank you for the thoughts and advice; while I had heard people extoll and condemn 5.8, it was useful to hear that overall people are happy with the upgrade even if they don't like the suspension changes. Thanks for your opinions.

I'm going to take the plunge and upgrade this weekend.
