5 Features I'll Miss With My Model S

Here are 5 items I’ll miss with my Model S. I believe each of these is a hardware item and cannot be changed with a software update. Most of us have never spent $100,000 on a car before and expect to have these features as standard equipment or as available options.

Tesla should consider this list as they must broaden the appeal of this wonderful vehicle to those of us who have been enjoying these features.

For what it’s worth, here are my Top 5….

1) Adaptive Cruise Control – Anyone using cruise control in even moderate traffic appreciates this feature. The car senses traffic ahead, slows down, then resumes speed when the road is clear. The driver doesn’t have to do a thing.

2) Folding Rear View Mirrors – This topic has many posts elsewhere. This car is already wide and with another 9 inches for the mirrors, we’re just asking for them to get hit by garage doors or shopping carts. Does Tesla really think we’re going to get out of the car to fold in the mirrors?

3) Parking Sensors – Saves our bumpers from dings and scratches by giving an audible and/or visible signal on the proximity of an obstruction.

4) Heated Steering Wheel – As winter approaches here I appreciate a rapidly heated steering wheel when I get into the car.

5) Cooled Seats – And when summer comes around again, I’d like to be able to cool my seat.

Front parking sensor

Rear cam guide lines in reverse

Auto adjusting steering wheel and seat on exit

Auto adjusting seats and mirrors on entry depending on driver

That's all I need. The rest I can give up.

The only item I really, really miss is the parking sensors, front & rear. It really comes in handy with my Lexus LS430, and I'm very nervous with my Model S, because I have no feel for the clearances around the car. The rest are minor issues that I can easily do without.

Heads up Display.

Love this feature on my 530i and find it's a great safety feature. Regularly shows speed and nav directions in the glass - never have to take your eyes off the road.

This is going to sound strange, but I miss the auto sound leveling. As quiet as the Model S is when I go from in town to the highway I have to adjust the volume. Never had to in my previous car.

+1 on the parking sensors front and rear camera notwithstanding, guide lines on the camera image.
+1 on the cooled seats. Australian summers can be brutal - up to 40 degrees Centigrade some days.
+1 on folding rear mirrors - standard on my Merc B class, controls for which are being used in the S already.
+1 on the fold away steering wheel, Lexus has had this from the get go of that marque. Great feature especially for the older and less flexible among us who make up a large part of the demographic buying/able to afford, this car.
Maybe all the above on the version 1.5? Hopefully available on the international versions which have not been homologated as yet. (I am in Australia and we get our cars July August next year).

yea, all that are great features, especially front parking sensors or at least rear cam guide lines in reverse (it shouldn't be problem to make with some future software update)

I have a bare bones Subaru Baja, so I have nothing to miss.

As an owner of a vehicle that has park distance control and camera guide lines, I'm amazed how bad I am backing up or parallel parking in a car that doesn't have these features. It's like I just got my driver's license.

So when I get my Model S - I'll feel 16 again!

Quick guide, works with any car:

Line up about 1 yd/meter from front car, a bit ahead.
Back until your rear wheels line up with his, then cut sharply (full) in towards curb
When front wheels reach the same line-up spot cut the other way sharply (full)
Arrive perfectly positioned, in one step!

The nose of your car will just miss the tail of the other. Get used to that; it's part of the magic.

Heated seats without leather requirement.
Heated side mirrors without heated seats requirement. (same circuitry)
Parking sensors would be nice (in case that curb stone is a bit higher than I estimated and car doesn't go over it)

Model S is as wide as a X5, every inch helps in urban driving - my vote too on electrically folding rear view mirror and frontal sensors (or even better for bird view surround cameras, even Nissan has this!)

All above plus soft close doors!

I would rather have a longer drive distance than to pull off the battery with convenience items.

Not sure I understand. The only thing besides driving that uses a significant amount of power from the battery is the AC, and you can leave that off if you want.

Uncompromised EV = Model S? Surely under a reasonable assumption on range, one would expect the modern conveniences of similar cars such as Audi Merc BMW etc in Tesla?

Apparently >20,000 reservation holders and owners don't find the lack of those features a problem. At least, not enough to keep them from buying the car.

@tesla.mrspaghet...anything to get rid of oil, not necessarily not wanting the luxuries that come with much cheaper cars and which many will fit as aftermarket. Look at sofauthors cci - yes Tesla says it is designing something. Heck they designed a whole car from the ground up! How long does it take? Should already be on the options list and park sensors are a no brainier at the cost of these items, especially in the tech package. As for reversing lines on the camera, hey they have been standard for ages.
Tesla has resources to develop superchargers, but thes items are to enhance "the best car in the world".

Hmmm... electrically folding mirrors - or the ability to drive long distances conveniently and for free. I'll take the SuperChargers, thanks.

It is quite possible that they do not have resources to make every item into list themselves (yet anyway), and reliable supplier from outside is hard to get and that is only reason those are not yet standard or options.

Remember that they just started to manufacture the car, this year Model S is version 1.0, and everybody knows that 1.0 of anything is going to lack some features compared to next version of that same product. Not everything will be in yet. Getting car early has a price tag attached, and I'm not talking about the money.

Heh. If you want an Audi with 300 mi BEV capacity, at their current prices, complain to Audi that they have their priorities wrong.

Yeah some of those things are cool, but most are a bunch of shit shots in the every-escalating cars.
I don't need any of that because the Model is the ultimate in cool.

No need to get all huffy, guys.

He's just suggesting some improvements they might be saving for those of us waiting a couple years. ;)

Or next quarter. Elon says there'll be a buncha optional upgrades available to retrofit. And new variants. Swap for a Perf cabriolet?

It'd be awesome to see what these options are!

As botha a Tesla shareholder and P85 reservation holder, it's in our interest to see Tesla succeed in the long-run as a viable car company instead of a one-shot wonder with Model S.

Model S is an excellent car and I can't wait to get mine! But guess what, notwithstanding every other car company is 2-3 years behind Model S development; but competition is coming (has anyone seen the touch screen on the upcoming Porsche 918!? It's a concept, but it'll be mainstream in all Porsches within 3-5 years).

Do all the nay-sayers on imporving a wonderful car and car company say no to continuously bettering Tesla's competitors? Anyone remember the history and the lesson of Honda NSX (how awesome it's 20 years ago at its release, until the Germans and the Italians catch up).

The 918, to be sold in beginning 9/18, limited to 918 units, for about $918K, is a street/track race toy. Hybrid, about as good as hybridization gets. 2 passengers.

Just imagine the next Panamera with a Model S like EV with similar performance and all the current Porsche equipments at a similar price...

Horrible thought. Completely different, very cluttered design.
