I am a huge Tesla fan - own a Roadster and an S and have an X on order, HOWEVER, unless the Falcon doors become optional, I'm not sure I can open them in my garage. I only have 7' clearance. Does anyone know the open height of the doors?
Hi, Check out the video it will answer a lot of questions. It will open in a standard garage. Check out the one in the picture.
7" clearance over what? A Roadster? An SUV?
I have 7 feet from the garage floor to the garage door when it is open. In other words, if the top of the Falcon door is over 7 feet from the ground, it will hit the garage door in the up position.
7 feet = 210 cm. I don't think that is enough.
From pictures I estimate car height somewhere in range of 70 inch, falcon doors open up half the width of the roof which makes it something close to 25 inch 70+25= 95 = 237.5 cm make it 240cm to make it round number. One foot too much.
I have given this a lot of thought, because I do have the same issue with the garage door, but if the car is backed in, which is likely what I will do, then I should clear my garage door without problems.
The problem is not the door, but the roof. A 7' ceiling seems unusually low, though.
The ceiling is higher but the limiting factor is the height of the garage door and garage door track which obviously must roll up under the ceiling. In my case, the ceiling is a standard 8 feet but with the track, operator and door taken into consideration, the clearance is only 7 feet.
Seems like someone who is near the Model X demo could just take out a measuring tape and measure the open height of the door. This would be a useful spec to have on the Model X website.

Although I don't have a hight issue, I've changed my garage door installation from a track system to a direct drive system. It allows the garage door to be within 6" or less of the ceiling. I've posted about this in other threads. Here is a link to the system I use called a Jackshaft motor by LiftMaster (it mounts on the wall by the garage door):
It may be that the doors do not have to open to full height - if so, then full manual control and also the ability to preset 1 other height (so you don't have to check for clearance each time in the garage) would be helpful.
The Falcon doors open to the same height as a regular SUV lift-gate. No issues in a garage.
The picture on the model X page appears to be a standard 7 foot high garage door.
That pic makes me wonder how the aerodynamics are with the Falcon Wings lifted, ready to stoop.
In the shareholders meeting, Elon stated that the falcon doors will have proximity sensors, so they will stop just short of hitting anything.
I think it's brilliant !! I LOVE the falcon doors :-)
