How likely will parking sensors retrofit be?

I'm seriously considering skipping the wait until US versions of MS are finally offered with parking sensors and simply buying a demo car now. Any thoughts on how likely a Tesla-performed retrofit of the sensors is to be made available ? I wouldn't want an aftermarket job.

Car is mostly for my wife (yeah right) and she really wants the sensors.

I was told they definitely will be available as a retrofit, but no sense as to timing. Don't wait. Once you have the car, you'll kick yourself for even considering waiting for parking sensors. I wanted parking sensors, too. Now, it just doesn't seem that important.

Thanks so much. Yeah, a young kid working at the Canoga Park, CA store told me (while he was outside polishing a few MS's that it would definitely be upgradable but he also said he was sure it would be free. There went his credibility right out the window.
My fear is that the wiring harness is absent in current production cars which would clearly complicate matters.

One of the salespeople at the Topanga Canyon store also told me it would probably be available in the next few months, and that he heard retrofit would be available for probably a grand or so more than factory installed. Taken with a grain of salt.

For your info : in Europe, parking sensors are only available as an option if you also have the Tech Package. Apparently , the wiring harness is only installed when you have the Tech Package. Don't understand what one has to do with the other, but we can't select the sensors as an option unless we also take the Tech Package.

I sure hope that my future car will have the harness should I order it with the Tech Pack.

I would have hated waiting for parking sensors. I would like to have them one day, but I won't have regretted the purchase if I don't get to buy a retrofit.

How much do the parking sensors cost on the European version? Might help set expectations on a US price.

Retrofit will be very expensive as you will have to buy new front and rear fascia plus sensors, etc

Check out teslatap.com. there are sevrral aftermarket sensors that look just as good as factory installed. So at least there are viable alternatives and they don't depend on wiring harnesses.

Calabasas, i flagged your post as inappropriate because you used a word that has overtones of racial or ethnic slurs. People might find it offensive as I did. That has no place in the forum.

Unless Tesla has made provisions like installing the harness, etc the cost of retrofitting the sensors will be quite hi. Even with pre-installation, it will cost $$$ to modify the bumpers. I do not understand why Tesla did not did not install them standard in the first place. They could have installed the smart cruise control too. Toyota has all the hardware and they buy it dirt cheap.

Again, Tesla did a wonderful job with Model S version 1.0. Yes, I could have waited for version 3.0, but at my stage of life, it makes no sense to wait. I reserved a Model X Sig as well. By that time, Tesla will add all kinds of features and may be even a 500 mile option.

Tesla and Elon Musk have delivered returns on my investment beyond my expectations. At the risk of being called delusionary, I think the company could be a 10x bagger from here. They have all the basic technology, business model to disrupt the ICE market and do not need disruptive battery tech, though it would help. They could optimize Model S, X and increase range, while cutting prices with economies of scale. $50-$120k is a huge market for profits with 25% margins. Gen III is just icing.

There are ghettos in every cross section of society across all racial, ethnic and geographical borders.. What you inferred from that word is solely your problem.

Whoa there. Whether you disagree or not with David Trushins right to be offended by the comment or not, the fact is he was offended. It's not anyones place to judge his feelings as being valid. A more grown up response is to let him know that no offense was intended and move on. Otherwise, you could be judged as being racially insensitive and this thread will turn into something that doesn't belong on this forum.
BTW, I happen to agree with David's point.

It would certainly be a nice surprise if the wiring has been placed in the bumpers for future expansion. Has anyone w/ tech package tried removing their bumper to find out? :)

I have to agree with Dave. I have NEVER heard it used descriptively as anything other than a pejorative meaning substandard. That is exactly how CK used it. It is always a racial smear. If you intend otherwise, select a word with less linguistic baggage.

That's exactly what I implied and that's exactly what was inferred. The only baggage with that word is the one certain people are carrying around.
There can be no racial undertones to the word by definition! There are Ghettos everywhere in the world in virtually every culture. Tell me this.... which race in this world could be offended by using "Ghetto" as a euphemism for "sub standard"? There isn't one race or even a collection of races in our world that can claim sovereignty over the institution of Ghettos!
My take is that if you're offended, move on. I'm not going to apologize for using a word that I never intended to hurt anyone with especially since its not a curse word of any kind nor is it banned anywhere.
Perhaps an apology from those that are mistakenly offended or over sensitive is in order?
I wouldn't insist on that either because it's the right of those people to be offended.... just don't expect to exercise that right while also insisting that I apologize or abdicate my right to choose my words.
I desired to convey a specific opinion of a certain website's after-market parking sensor mod which is available for purchase and I chose the one word out there that truly conveyed my opinion of the product.
If others don't agree that their parking sensor mod is "Ghetto", say so. But to flag my comment as inappropriate?
That's censorship. I would be curious to hear EM's take on cencorship considering where he grew up and where he chose to live when afforded the chance. And he comes from a place where there are ghettos as well.

Probably time to get this thread back on track.

I personally think that the Steelmate parking sensor is at least as good as the ones on my Cadillacs. The front lights show me obstacles in front as I am facing front and the rear obstacles when I am looking in the rear view mirror or have my head turned to look behind. I don't really need to look at the display for proximity, because I have the camera displaying what's in back.

As far as the wiring harness being in the car, I don't think that's a big deal. For one thing, If you put in the wiring harness, then you may as well put in the sensors. Sensor vendors might change and any wiring might not be the right thing later on. Also, putting in the wiring, although tedious, is not that big a deal for someone who knows what they're doing.

I plan on waiting to see what happens with the 2014's coming out. If they have the sensors, then we will know what, if any, retrofit plans there are. If they don't, then that is a giveaway that retrofit plans are way in the future if ever.

I don't think the wiring harness is there. The guy that did the install didn't find any wiring.

They have planned for sensors and functionality in the software, the question is whether the hardware connections exist in current production vehicles…

Al & Ed's Autosound posted a YouTube of their installation in a MS. the sensors looked as factory oem as it gets. My main concern was the after-market indicator that they must be using inside the car. The video doesn't show what the alert hardware looks like. I really want the visual display like my $30k mini countryman offers

In my opinion, any after market parking sensor solution is going to be second rate because it will not be integrated into the Model S touch screen system. I don't think parking sensors are that important that you need to mess up the clean, integrated feel of the car. But that's just my opinion and aesthetic.

You're absolutely right. Best just to hope that TM will offer the retrofit and update the car's firmware for the on- board display.

I was really concerned about the lack of backup sensors, and it does cause me to be a little more careful when backing up. They kind of made me lazy in my other cars, IMHO. That being said, I am not sure I would spend even $500 putting them on. I just don't know if the value is there and I don't want to have the downtime without the car. I'm the kind that gets all the options, so me saying that is something (just so you know the viewpoint I come from).

I never would have believed anyone saying this on the forum until after a week with the car (and you probably won't believe any of us either.. )
