Results for Poll of owners - how often will you battery swap

There has been much discussion on the Forums about battery swapping and I think it might be useful to take a pole of current owners on the liklihood of using the service (if you are a reservation holder, please do not respond. I want the poll to capture people who have expierence using and charging the car on a regular basis). The poll should be based on Elon's plan as best we know it so far:

- ~$60-80 per swap, more $ if you dont return the battery.
- swapping is only for quick charge, not range extension (ie 60's get 60's and 85's get 85's)
- swapping only at SC stations (not service centers)

With this plan, how often do you think you would use swapping in 1 year. For comparison purposes, also answer the same question for SC use.

C) 4-10 per year
D) 10-20 per year
E) >20 per year

My answers are zero for swapping and 4-10 for SC.

After we get ~50 or more responses I will tabulate the results. Of course, there are may biases in this type of poll, but I think it will give some rough estimates.

OK, here are the results of the Owners Poll to date (this was done in the owners section and I have unrestricted it for all to see).

While this survey has some inherent bias (note that I deal will large datasets and statitical analysis in my day job), it does look like that for current owners, only a minority (<~25%) will likely use battery swapping as currently understood. However, based on comments this number would go up if battery swap could also extend range (ie 60 to 85 etc). In contrast, supercharging is very popular and this survey suggests that the vast majority of owners will use supercharging.

Thanks to all for participating. If additional owners want add there input, I will continue to update the data. If a reservation holder or non-owner, please indicate this in your post.

If the poll is modified for range extension, giving me a one-week $60x2=$120 'rental' of an 85 with SuperCharging capability, then my answer changes to:

B) 1-3 per year for swapping, 4-10 for SC

1-3 swaps per year and 4-10 Supercharges per year (considerably more swapping if "renting" 85s is an option)

.... although I might swap for a better battery... I have a 85 kWh now but I imagine that it will be a ~60kWh in 10 years... then it would be worth paying $100 to rent a 120 kWh for a trip from time to time. Wonder how long I would get to keep the 120 kWh before I have to pay the difference.

B) 1-3 times/year. I would choose this over supercharging for the LA to vegas trip. Basically, anytime I'm on a solo road trip, I'd supercharge. Anytime I might be inconveniencing friends or pointing out the minor negative of having to wait 30-40 min in Barstow, I would just pay for the swap. Vegas is so expensive, anyway, I always plan on losing money on a trip, anyway.

Road trips are with our motorhome pulling our Jeep behind us.

But I think it is a good Ad campaign for Tesla to be able to do both.

We average two 2000+K road trips per year and will probably swap batteries at our first Tesla Station on the way out & pick up our battery on the way back. (Plan to do most on-trip charging via SC and overnight, but love the option to battery swap if in a hurry for some reason.) It will be nice to have the max range charge option while on the trip without worrying about possible degradation of our battery pack :)

Of course this is all a guess since we haven't been near an SC. We have about 13,600 miles all charging at home overnight (except for a couple of Tesla Store charges.)

I think the keys are time and supercharger accessibility. Zero for now, but in a couple of years, maybe. Superchargers 4-10.

Near zero for battery swap. However, I can see using it to venture out from the supercharger network somewhat over the first couple of years.

I'll use superchargers every 1-2 months in the I-95 and I-85 corridor when that's built out.

I am lucky enough to have a SuperCharger between my office and job locations and I charge there once a week. Last week I was there 3 times. I'm just not important enough to pay $120 to save 40 minutes. I've reached a point in life where slowing down, enjoying the moment, is a good thing. I look forward to charging and chatting with other S owners and learning from their experiences and sharing mine.

All this being said, there might come a time when it's practical to swap and I might do it. Here's my question. Elon said he'd charge the going rate for 15 gallons of gas. If the 85 battery is charged to 270, that means the car is getting 18 mpg. which is a bit below the highway mileage of most luxury cars. If it were based on 25 mpg or 11 gallons or under $50, it might make a difference. It is amusing that I consider this cost because before I got the S, I was paying over $100/tank and got about 400 miles.

A)Zero...I don't need to drive long distances very often, and when I do, I'm never in such a time crunch where I would only have 5 minutes for battery swap, and not 30-60 minutes for a Supercharge.

To be honest, I don't think it's a great investment on the part of Tesla, as I think it is something more to silence critics than a feature that a majority (or even a reasonable number) of Tesla owners will use.

I would never swap my battery for another one unless I was guaranteed that the new one would be as good or better than my current one and I had an unlimited battery warranty.
