Michelin Primacy

Picked up the new car a couple of weeks ago. I ordered before the price increase when the primacy tire upgrade wasn't an option but my car came with them anyway. Just out of curiosity, what tires are standard and how/why are the Michelin Primacy tires better?

The Primacy tires have lower rolling resistance - good for 3% bump in rated range.

The standard tire is Goodyear Eagles.

Also note that the tread on the Eagles is a high performance all-season, and the tread on the Primacies is a touring all-season. That may also affect which you consider to be better.

I thought the standard was Continentals and the Michelin PS was the P+ tire and for a period was used because the Conty factory couldn't meet demand. When were the Eagles switched to?

Not sure when the standard tires were switched to Goodyear Eagles but car manufacturers contract with a supplier that offers them the best deal. I was informed by a higher up (VP) at Tesla that Michelin did the study to claim the 3% better performance. He said that they are giving the free upgrade to the 85kWh cars only. If you buy the 60kWh you can pay $1900 extra. When they run completely out of Goodyear Eagles all Model S will come standard with Michelin Primacy tires.

I'm not sure how much I believe about a study done by the tire company trying to get the contract to sell all of the tires for a model year. I have been driving Goodyear Eagles on every car I've owned since 1983 and have always gotten more than 90K miles treadlife. I'm getting an 85kwh and don't want the 60K mile tires.

I was researching the Michelin Primacy tire and it is a new tire with no track record. It has a factory warranty of 60K mile treadlife. Goodyear Eagles that are the standard tire have an 80K mile treadlife warranty. My current car came with Goodyear Eagles and has 105500 miles and two of the tires still have enough tread to pass inspection.

I asked if I had to take the tire upgrade and he said that he would hold a set of Goodyears at the Service Center to switch-out for the Michelin Primacys.

Primacy tires are reportedly good in terms of being able to stop short in the rain.

so, goodyears are better than the michelins?

Finalized Aug 13, 2013, delivered Sept 5, 2103 S85 and was given the Primacy, no extra charge.

Only by my own experience. Why does Michelin put such a short tread life warranty on their new tires?

Those are the standard tires for the 21"

The Eagles and Primacy's are on the 19" wheels.

The Primacy's have a Higher UTQG rating for treadwear and traction and also have a lower rolling resistance.

They are also almost double the price of the Eagles on Tire Rack.

Where did you get your info on the treadlife warranties?

Tire Rack says that the eagles have no treadlife warranty, but a workmanship and materials warranty.

The primacy's have a 6 Year/45,000 Mile treadlife warranty and the same workmanship and materials warranty.

The Primacy tires are supposed to stop quickly in the rain. I saw some videos on Michelin's website. Of course they'd say that, wouldn't they? But they cost a lot more per tire than the Goodyear's even on third party discount websites and my dad chimed into the discussion (are dad's ever wrong?)and said he thought they were better.

How are the primacies in winter...or, will winter tires be needed and if so, what?

There are 3 differant Primacy Tires listed

MVX4. STHV All-Season 60k
MXM4. HV All-Season 55k
MXM4. WYZ All-Season 45k

Can't find on Tesla configurator which they are using.

So it may even be lower.

price has nothing to do with tread life the worst tires Ive ever owned were Continental Tires that cost much more than Goodyears and had a blowout at 9k on one tire and the other 3 became slicks by 13k. I ended up in a class action lawsuit.

based on current 85P owners on this forum the 85Ps that came with Continental Tires are all complaining about low treadlife.

Tesla uses the MXM4, W rated, for a tread life warrantee of 6y/45k

The Goodyear Eagle's are RS-A2's V rated, and I do not believe they have a treadlife warranty.

People are definitly complaining about the Conti's. But you cannot compare the Conti's to the Eagles or the primacys. The Conti's are 21" summer tires. The Eagle's and Primacys are 19" all season tires. Summer tires are very sticky and provide better performance, but they don't last.

On the good year I pulled out the paperwork from my glovebox. The 80k on my Goodyear tires are Assurant not Eagles. The Tesla website shows Eagle RS-A2 for standard 19" tires. They are only 50k because they don't know how very high speed rated tires are going to be abused. I always got far more than 50k on Eagle GTs and I'm already 25k over the 80k warranty on the Goodyear Assurants on my Charger R/T.

Vehicles bought or leased equipped with them, and/or eligible Continental tires bought between Jan 1, 2003 and July 14th 2008 where you got less than 30K miles of wear are eligible for a reimbursement.
My Continentals were Selfsealing All-Season Touring tires.

Depending on when the tires were replaced will determine how much you will receive.

I got $60 per tire. And I got screwed on the blowout. If a tire blowout occurs during warranty period good luck trying to collect. Even though it was on the left rear tire they said it must have been a road hazard not their tire. Funny how you can driving straight down a highway and run over something bad enough to turn the rear tire to shreds and not make a mark on the front tire.
