Floor Mats Stink

I must say that I love my Model S and have really had no issues. The minor ones I have my ranger has a plan and the fix is on its way......but.....I must say, I spent 92,000 on a car and the floor mats that the car comes with are crap. On top of the crap floor mats, they don't even give you floor mats for the back seat. Tesla, come on.....I think I could have my 11 year old daughter make me a better set of mats than what come with the car. What gives...92k and CRAP floor mats???

I emailed weathertech as well and they said they're in production and they should be released soon.

wdazew: Floor mats are on the floor and then continue up the firewall. The firewall is almost vertical on the passenger side. The floor mat is curling off the top of the firewall. Then slowly, assisted by the effects of gravity, it get lower and lower until the top of the mat touches the floor.

One good thing is the driver side firewall is not quite as steep. So my mat is not curling there. If it did the carpet could interfere with the accelerator and break peddles. And right now Tesla does not need a recall because of floor mats.

Still no word from service center on it's replacement. For right now I broke a paint stick in half. Wedged between plastic of 17" console and carpet. Other end hold my carpet up. It's high enough that it's not visible.... Just a temporary patch... until Tesla replaces the mat.

I see the images and description of the premium floor mats on the TM website, but I have two questions, hope someone here knows:
1. I see the driver's side mat has two metal grommets, why? The car does not have the anchor hooks to take advantage of the grommets.
2. So the rear floor mats also have the Tesla logo? The image on the website shows the logo only on the two front mats, but then the front mats overlap the rear mat, so I just don't know if the logo is hidden under the overlapped portion.

thanks,

My Honda Accord came with two sets of floor mats: one all-weather and the other carpeted. We've only used the all-weather mats until the MS arrived. The carpeted Honda mats are now in the MS!

I scooted the passenger side mat so that the edge overlapped the seam in the carpet under the dash - and was able to wedge the top edge of the carpet so that it isn't floating free. That should be a usable workaround until the Tesla mats arrive (hopefully any day now).

The driver's side is also curling up on the top - but the pedals stop it - so that's not a problem.

I can't recall buying a car that came with mats - I seem to recall buying the mats package on my last few cars. The mats that come with the Model S are usable - though I'm looking forward to the higher quality mats!

I would love to have nicer mats, but am a little leery of spending right now as I'm expecting to get hit out of the blue with a sudden requirement to drop a few thousand on a service plan within a 30 day window. I really hope Tesla gets all this worked out so people taking delivery in the future can roll all these add-ons into the financing. Mats, winter wheels/tires, service plan, 3G... it adds up quick. I don't begrudge Tesla its right to nickel and dime us like every other manufacturer, but many of us Model S buyers are already stretching like h3ll and spending way more on a car than we otherwise would.

I figure if I trash the carpet replacing it in ten years will probably would cost about as much as a couple of sets of these premium mats you all are discussing.

Duct tape!

The car is not advertised to come with any floor mats, and if you want nice Tesla ones, you'll have to buy them seperately from http://shop.teslamotors.com/collections/model-s-functional (the mats are out of stock again, and the product page is unavialable right now).

I don't like it either, but it's a pretty common practice.

I see the cheaper temporary mats that are included at delivery as a courtesy.

The premium mats are not available to order with the car configuration probably because they knew that they would not have enough available.

Just a follow-up on @Velo1's comment above:

1. I see the driver's side mat has two metal grommets, why? The car does not have the anchor hooks to take advantage of the grommets.

Good point. I hadn't noticed before, but the floor in the Models does not have anything to attach the floor mat to. Why the metal grommets in the premium mats? Do the mats come with some sort of fastener that you attach to the floor?

ah, thanks for the explanations. I will buy some premium mats too, then. Is there a consensus? Lloyd's (matmycar.com) or weathertech? I probably don't need the "weather tech, all weather floor mats" in virginia. I guess that means Lloyd's. It sounds like the quality is good.

But what color would match the S? black? ebony? smoke?

Ditto.

I think someone swapped out the ebony because it wasn't a good match.

Yes, they are fasteners which screw into the carpeting and have a hook:

The grommets attach by making a small slit in the undercarpet and then slipping in the one piece snugly thru the tiny opening and then the may hold quit securely to that. Same as on my Honda when I received those mats. It was a puzzle at first but real simple. Any dealer will do it for you of your pleasant and they're not busy.

NO! Retention clips are screwed into carpet:

So what color should you get the mats in? Is the Tesla under carpet always black? My car on order has a grey interior.

@shop - Yes, I have a grey interior and the under carpet is black.

And for LLoyds mats, Ultimat, Luxe or Berber?

I love much about the S but it seems like some creature comforts were not really a priority and not given the necessary thought. Have any Model S owners come up with good solutions for:
1. No coat hook!
2. Crummy floor mats in the front. No mats for the back seat.
3. A decent storage solution for the floor level storage tray.
4. Cargo area mat.

Bedankt

For Lloyds, seems like most are going with Ultimat, which is what I plan to get. The others are good too - different price points and quality. The multi-color Berber looks best if you want to hide dirt. When you order and select Tesla, Model-S, it will default to "Black" which other users say is a good match.

I also want grey to match my seats, so I'm waiting for some color samples to arrive before picking which one. Lloydds has about 8 different grey colors, of which 4 look somewhat close. I'll post an update when I pick one (and/or get the mats and see how good the match is).

Someone reported that Ultimat Parchment is the closest match to the Tan interior.

Anyone found any other good colour matches?

Well, haven't taken delivery yet but expecting to hear from them in the next couple of days (window 1/26/13-2/9/13).

Anyway I order the Lloyd's Ultimate Mats for interior (2-front & 1 rear seat) and the trunk mat for $221.05 (15% discount code welcome15 and CA. sales tax with free shipping). Went to Tesla and ordered Frunk liner and cargo net for $174.50 ($$120 for the liner & net plus $32 FedEx ground shipping ((outrageous)) and balance CA. sales tax).

When I ordered the floor mats from Anything Auto I spoke to them about the Ultimate 32oz vs. Luxe 48oz carpet mats. Sales rep suggested the Ultimate for everyday use and they are less expensive than the Luxe. So that's what I did. Read a couple of Model S owner reviews on their site with positive reviews.

I do think that nice quality floor mats (at least the interior passenger area) should come with the car. But what's another $400 (that's a lot of money for many of us) in the scheme of things when it cost $600/year for service.

Yikes! You might die from improply place floor mats!

Safety warnings are funny sometimes.

So can anyone who has the premium Tesla mats comment on them relative to other options?

I called weather tech and they said they are working on mats that will be sold at the Tesla store. Weather tech is the best on the market now.

They may be selling them through the Tesla store, but they will also be selling them direct and likely without the 400% markup (direct selling confirmed by Weathertech).

Appreciate all the great info, tips, and opinions expressed in this thread!

Agreed, this on at least three other similar threads.

Based on what I learned from these I decided not to get the Tesla brand mats, and instead ordered the Lloyd Ultimat from anythingautocom. However, to apply the WELCOME15 coupon I had to toss in a random item ~ $27 item to bump the total over $150 (thus effecting getting that item for free).

Same here, ordered the full set of Lloyd Ultimat mats from anythingauto.com, added a set of Lloyd front rubber mats, and got all that shipped to my door for $148 (using the WELCOME15 discount).

Thank you forum!
