Keless entry

I have had my model S for only a couple of weeks. I have the tech package, but for some reason, starting after only about 10 days of ownership, the keyless entry doesn't always work. Sometimes it does, and more and more often I may approach the car and even walk around it with the key in my hand, and the car won't react and won't unlock. I wonder if anybody else has had the same problem.

Occasionally I have to use the top of the key to open my doors, but I would say 60% of the time it works perfectly, and 30% of the time I reach for my key but before I press it opens (perhaps the prox-card in my pocket interferes with the signal), and the rest I have to actively unlock it.

I've had just a few incidences where I've done the pocket grab like @jat, but it works for me 98% of the time.
Sometimes when I lock it with the phone app, and then walk up I need to actually press the fob top twice.

This was an issue I presented to The Ranger. He told me that if I locked the door manually, I needed to touch the handle to open it. Assuming it is set for walk-away locking, the handles "present" when I approach. Now that I understand, I confirm that it works. I still have issues about trusting it to lock when I walk away. Today, I found that I thought it was locked, but it was not. I left the key in the cup holder. It was not a problem because the handles were recessed and the average person would not know they simply had to touch it to open. I won't make that mistake again.

Must have a robust fob battery first of all. Second be sure the fob is not being interfered with by key in your pocket. Fob works best if it lives alone.

I unlocked the car once with my phone, just for the fun of it. and it seems like that's when the Tesla started to occasionally ignore fob. I don't know if there's actually a connection between the two, but that's when the car started to not always response to me approaching it with fob in my hand or pocket.

Yea I also get that sometimes but I always though is because the car went on sleep mode to minimize the vampire drain.

If the fob is in the same pocket as my phone, it doesn't work well. I believe it interferes with the signal. Try keeping the fob away from other electronics. Works for me. Also, if I lock it with the fob and come right back, I must unlock with the fob.

Usually when this happens to me it is actually just a long delay in the handles presenting and time for a center console reboot...

@Newampster: Huh? Locking manually doesn't seem to make it work differently for me. I've noticed (and read other comments like this) that depending on how I approach, it may take a second more to auto-unlock-and-present, but that happens regardless.

Once in a long while they don't present, but it's definitely not connected to me manually locking, since I do that more often than I need to, being paranoid. ;-) I'm trying to train myself not to, but depending on what's in the car and where I am, I don't always want to wait for the auto-lock. . . .

@rchiang: There is no real sleep mode yet (unless you were on the old version...4.1?...that had it and never upgraded; they took it out after that).

I don't have the tech-package so I don't have autopresent, but this "90-98% of the time" is really not acceptable. Tesla has got to get on the ball with this. On any car I've owned with auto unlocking (triggered by touching door handle) it's always been 100%. Anything less would have been unacceptable.

The Auto-Present Handels feature is disabled if the key has been out of range for more than 24 hours, or if the key remains within range for five minutes after all doors have been closed.

I haven't had issues noted by others but have noticed that my car presents handles quicker when I approach it from the front rather than the rear. When approaching from the front they are out when I arrive at the car rather than me needing to wait a second or two when I approach from the rear.

Okay, I actually tested it and did find after over 24 hours it ignored me and I had to press the handles. I've had to do that a few times...just never connected it to how long the car sat (and have had that a few other times, so I hadn't made the connection). Learn something new every day.

Don't have my MS yet, but I'm curious after reading Wilier's statement about fob staying in range for 5 minutes. I will park and charge my car in the carport right next to my house. Basically, there would be just one wall (with a window) and about 10 feet of thin air between my car and the fob when I'm at home. Would the MS register that as the key fob being in range?

Well, you could give us the specs on the wall and the glass and we can do some studies on it for interference, structural design and such, or you can wait and walk towards the wall and have someone tell you if the car has responded. Which do you think is easier?

I don't see why it is so strange or such a bother to you to ask a question like this on a forum like this. I have ordered my car november last year and I still have a few months to wait probably. Can't I ask a little question like this, just in case there is someone who has a similar setup? Or perhaps someone can tell me that when you move only a few feet away from the car, it will sense the fob going away and it will auto lock..

Next week I am going to have the charger installed, and while I know where I'ld ideally have it placed, with my MS fully under the carport roof (but closest to the house), the answer I might get from someone in a similar situation might actually make me decide to put the charger a bit further away from the house.

Obviously, you are not that person, and you don't know the answer to my question. May I suggest that in future, when you see someone asking advice from someone in a similar situation, and you don't have anything to offer, that you just move on to the next thread instead of dissing that person's question?

I just took my keys and put them on a 5 foot pole and walked 360 degrees around my car. No response. If I move to 4 feet, then the car wakes up. There you have it, 5 feet away is all it needs. for my car anyway.

To be sure, put the fob in a foil bag or metal box overnight, etc.

Beware parking near large transmission towers - there is a very large antenna tower on Wisconsin Ave in Washington DC in Tenleytown - this interferes with the key if you park near the tower. Car says "Key not in car" and the fob will not work. I called Tesla Roadside and they talked me through several possible places to hold the fob - by the rear window was the only one that worked to start the car again. Never park too close to such tower. Perhaps Tesla should include a software warning signal when interference is detected.
