No Tech or Sound package

Has anyone received their MS without the Tech or Sound package? I am thinking of voiding these as I need to trim down the cost and $3,750 for some of those 'tech' benefits does not seem worth it. However, I haven't seen any cars without these options and my dealer wasn't 100% clear on what I would / would not be missing.

For example:
- Power rear lift-gate (does this mean that I can't open AND close the trunk from the 17" display. I would assume that I could still 'pop' the trunk open and then manually open and close it)
- Navigation (obviously no turn by turn, but would I still have the Google maps. And isn't turn by turn now included in Google maps. Also, couldn't I just access Google maps from the browser)
- Automatic Keyless entry (this isn't clear. If I don't get the tech package, then what's the difference. I am assuming the handles still pop out. It's not like I need to use an old school key?)
- HD back-up camera (is there still a backup camera it's just not in HD?) I liked using the camera as my rear-view mirror on the test drive but I don't feel that it needs to be in HD.

I know that I might sound a little paranoid about some of these features but I have been burned with other cars where I didn't elect a certain high-end tweak and was disappointed to find out that it meant other features weren't there which I assumed any 21st century would have.

As for the radio, I don't care about XM radio and don't need 3,000 song storage. But for those that didn't get this option, what are your thoughts on the sound quality.

Obviously you can still open and close the trunk. Not sure about the details.

You can access Google Maps from the browser, but it doesn't have access to GPS, so it doesn't know where you are. That makes turn by turn pretty useless. It does have a Maps app that shows your current location on the map, but doesn't do turn by turn (or any directions at all).

- Automatic Keyless entry (this isn't clear. If I don't get the tech package, then what's the difference. I am assuming the handles still pop out. It's not like I need to use an old school key?)

You need to press the unlock button on the key fob to get the handles to pop out, rather than them just popping out when you approach the car.

- HD back-up camera (is there still a backup camera it's just not in HD?) I liked using the camera as my rear-view mirror on the test drive but I don't feel that it needs to be in HD.

Yes, there is still a standard def backup camera.

One other point. At some stage you'll need to pay a currently unknown monthly fee for the internet access required to make Google maps work (although you may be able to tether your phone instead). Nav system has offline maps.

Just to be clear, I think it's a reasonable choice to either get or not get the tech package, just supplying information.

Corrections:

Non tech does have GPS, and google maps will plot you a course, but turn by turn instructions will not be announced or displayed on the dash (maps still shown on dash as well)

For keyless entry you can either press the button on the fob or press on the handle itself to get them to present. With tech package they present automatically when you approach.

Once you configure No No No No changes!!!!!! Absolutely NNOOOOOT!!

This has been discussed in other threads. Without the tech package, you will still have a browser on your touch screen, and if you have internet access, you can navigate the browser to maps.google.com. That site will work just as it does on a computer that has no GPS: it will plot a course from point A to point B, display turn-by-turn directions, but will not know where you are.

You will also have an app called "Maps" for the touch screen. If you have internet access, it will display a map provided by Google, and will also have a GPS with a location pointer showing you where you are. It will not, however, be able to plot a course or provide turn-by-turn directions.

While I don't have my S yet, multiple people have confirmed that non tech has GPS functionality.

Thanks for the answers everyone. Sounds like I will be ok passing on the tech.

I hate asking questions that have already been answered but can't find how to search for forums. I am missing something here n

@PacyWhitter

Read my post. Non-tech does have GPS functionality. It's just not available to the browser.

@stuartjakub

Try www.volkerize.com to search.

this is so helpful, thanks!

You also won't get Xenon headlamps, LED foglights or cornering lights. You won't get electrochromatic mirrors either, and I'm assuming that also means you won't get heated mirrors. You won't get puddle lights on the handles I believe. I also wonder about the everything about the interior lighting is the same.

The handles popping out automatically is actually really handy. I like it because I almost never mess with the key fob at all. I just put it in my coin pocket and leave it there. I have only used it a handfull of times to open or close the trunk. Normally, I'm fine using the buttons on the car itself for that. No need to handle the key fob means a very low chance of dropping it, losing it, leaving it somewhere, locking it in the car, etc. It's also kind of been impressive for my passengers the way you just walk close to the car and it unlocks for you.

I think Homelink is also a pretty big feature as well.

We're trying to figure out what exactly constitutes "convenience lighting" on another thread. A non-tech package owner confirms he has puddle lights which would seem to leave fog and cornering lights as the primary candidates?

I think convenience lighting is the small lights on the interior of the doors.

For people not reading through this entire thread, please be aware that several inadvertently incorrect statements have been made throughout in the thread about GPS functionality and keyless entry without the Tech package.

Check out PaceyWhitter's and DouglasR's great posts for corrections.

OP's question about the standard sound system has not yet been fully addressed. Unfortunately I cannot speak from personal experience, but the consensus of posts in other threads from people who have the standard sound system in their cars seem to indicate it is extremely good and will likely satisfy most non-audiophiles.

All,

My Tesla S does not have the tech package or the sound system. The sound is good. I can confirm I have interior lights on my doors, and well as reading lights in the front and back seats. I do not have exterior puddle lights as far as I can tell. I can pop the truck and back from the touch screen, but i cannot close the back without going out and closing it. The SD back up camera works well, including in dark conditions. Door handles open by using fob or touching the door handle.

My prior email should have said I do not have the upgraded sound system.
