Passenger door won't open

For some reason, the passenger side front door will not open when pulling on the handle. We have the tech package so the handles extend automatically. All other doors open when pulling on the handle. Could the door sensor be bad? FYI, I have reset the computer thinking it might be a software issue. Now I am thinking the sensor is not working.

Do yo have any recommendations?

I had this issue with one of the doors after the 4.2 upgrade. Is your LED on? Mine was off. Then, after a day, it started working again. I called Tesla and they ordered the part, but I am going to keep the appointment but let them know it now works....

I am having same problem with driver's door. Tesla service first had me pull the fuse that controls the driver side door handles (should be noted which it is in the manual) to hard restart the controls - it can be that the handle isn't communicating with the latch. When that didn't work they've put in an order for a replacement handle.

My front driver side door had the same problem when I first got the car. The service center swapped the handle in about an hour the next day. No problems since.

Having this same issue now. I picked up my car last Sunday and last night the issue started with the driver door. The light on the handle is not lit on that handle, but the other three are lit. Auto extending works fine on all four. The service rep thought it might be software, which I was happy about, and I'm expecting a call back. But it sounds like, from this thread, that it's hardware.

I had this issue with the driver side handle. Tesla replaced it. I think it's a problem with the hardward, not the software.

I had the exact same symptoms as you guys. The handle would extend, but the puddle light would not be on and you could not open the door.

Call customer service. There's nothing you can do to fix it yourself.

In the meantime, you either have to leave the window open so you can access the inner door handle, or get in from another door and reach the inner door handle.

I hope the issues with door handles get sorted out before I get my car in Mar/Apr. :-)

You can force the windows to open with the FOB. Press and hold, IIRC.

I too had this passenger door issue, right after the 4.2 install. At the same time, the driver's display, left side stopped displaying music data. Resetting the driver's display fixed both problems (for this car on this day).

Same problem with my car after driving it for 3 days. Its the rear passenger door behind the driver seat. I hope they fix these small things fast. Opened a case yesterday night.

This happened to me after the software update. The first time the update did not complete. It eventually fixed itself. If you call your service guy or email Tesla they'll get on it right away

Funny, same thing happened to my driver door. No puddle light, won't open, but the handle extends/retracts fine. I am taking it in to service on Friday, but its an annoyance getting in to the car right now, having to roll all the windows down first.

Service rep asked me to reboot the 17" screen. I did, but it didn't make any difference. I will try to reboot the IC tomorrow morning and see if that does the trick.

Maybe the MS-SAI (Secret A.I.) is telling you it doesn't approve of your choice of passengers. Or, perhaps, drivers! >;p

My wife just called and said that she was unable to unlock the drivers door and had to get in from the passenger side. She said the handle extended. My son has also complainded about opening the rear door.

Same problem here, passenger front door doesn't open. Kind of extra sucks because the weather hasn't been great and my "passenger," got all wet while I was blaming her for not being able to figure out how to open a door. Hopefully they will send out a ranger. Few other glitches but so far so good. I really hope these software updates can add some needed features.

Mine was fine upon delivery, then developed the problem (front passenger door wouldn't open and handle light wasn't on) about a week ago. This evening, my wife noticed the handle light was on, and it opened fine several times throughout the evening without problems. I didn't reboot or anything. Not sure what changed.

The gremlin died.

I've had my car for about a month, and I just had this problem today when taking someone out to lunch. When we finished launch and tried to get back in the car the passenger door wouldn't open from the outside. I tried locking and unlocking it at the restaurant and that didn't work so I just opened it from the inside. NOTE: The door handle would pop out, but the door wouldn't open.

When we got back to the office I tried it again and it still wouldn't work. I tried the lock/unlock trick again, and I heard a motor in the door turn on and then it worked. I will see if this was a one time thing or if it happens again.

After reading:

- Problem starts after 4.2 upgrade
- Problem is not software (solved by changing out hardware)
- Clicking occurs during upgrade (perhaps not any more?)

I wonder if this could be a hardware problem caused by the upgrade process. Perhaps during the upgrade, some signals are not controlled as usual and result in burning out something. Perhaps high current is produced that doesn't go through a fuse.

I had it way before the upgrade, and once Tesla replaced the handle, it's been working fine and thru two upgrades, so I don't think it's software related.

I have had my car since Oct, and this just happened today with my front passenger door. I
had the rear right handle replaced a couple of weeks ago because it was opening by itself. I suppose I will have to take it in to replace this door handle. But other than that, the car has been great to drive!

Hmm, it started working again later last night! The led light in the handle is also lit, seems that the light won't work if the handle doesn't.

This just happened to me today. Handles extend, light not working on driver door and it won't open. Had it hand washed...wondering if water caused something to short out...Already have scheduled appointment on Thursday at service center for a few other minor items.

Both of my rear doors take turns with this problem. Handles extend, lights work, but I can't open from the outside. Then it goes away. Then it comes back. Right now it is the passenger side that won't open. They are coming Thursday to deal with it.

Add me to the list... I've had my car less then a week and the driver's door stopped working today. Same symptoms as described above. Hopefully they can fix it soon.

Seems the warnings about "one more thing to go wrong" had some validity! But probably the Wow factor is worth it.

Called the Rockville Service Center this morning and they walked me through pulling the fuse to do a hard reset of both driver side doors. Taking the fuse out for 15 seconds fixed the problem! Hopefully, it'll stay fixed.

I had this also happen on my 60 kWh model S tuesday night. My drivers door just suddenly stopped working with no puddle light. I called the local Tampa Service Center and Mark, the local service manager was very helpful in inviting me to come in the following morning to fix the problem. They ended up replacing the door handle assembly in about 90 minutes. Afterwards, the technician showed me the part. Model S owners, you have no idea what a complex piece of compact machinery is involved in opening our doors. The main parts include a motorized assembly for pushing out the door handle and a pressure transducer for picking up the pulling action when you grab the door handle. The technician explained that it's often the pressure transducer that goes bad. He explained that the hardware usually goes bad shortly after building the car or lasts forever. Not sure why more model S owners seem to have problems with the driver's door (except that it's used more?) Also not sure why the cycling the fuse trick didn't work either. Nevertheless, the door's working fine now. This problem has occurred to so many Model S owners that you almost have to wonder if it's a software issue.

As the tech explained, it's electronic "Infant Mortality". If it's gonna go, it's very likely to go early. Usual digital device issue; perhaps a weak channel or connection in a chip etc.; it overheats with use, and a swift "vicious circle" of connector heat damage breaks the connection. New resilient circuitry can self-route around such damage, but that's pricey/future stuff.
