Reserve Power when state of charge shows 0 miles

After reading Elon's blog today about the NYT article he refers to a reserve charge of -5 miles. This is the first time I have seen Tesla confirm that the car will continue to drive for several miles even when it states you have 0 miles left. I think this is a smart feature of the car and helps to lessen range anxiety. Keep on rocking Tesla!!!!!!!!!!

A Quite few owners have driven below 0 percent of charge.

Yeah, I think 32-51 = -19 miles when he rendezvoused with his tow truck buddy. I got reamed once by the mods at TMC for daring to suggest such a thing (based on brief hints and reports from drivers forced below 0). I implied they were uninformed, which didn't endear me to them!! ;) Touchy.

Is it possible that the car would not go into neutral, to be placed on the tow truck because no ass was in the driver's seat?

I think the battery is only 85kw but some believe it may be 90kw with 85 useable, like a reserve and to avoid bricking. I don't have any data on this but the long 400+ driver gives a clue since he said that he used less than 81kw.

Good point! The tow rig driver probably never saw a Model S before and SURELY the 12v functions of the car were still operational which is all you need to release the brake! Broder probably could be of little help perhaps never realizing this since he was likely always seated when shifting ranges etc.

Yeah, I wondered about that brake release problem too. You would think it would be powered by the 12V battery and surely he didn't drain that battery too?

I think battery is 90kWh, of which car gives you 85kWh and absolutely stops at that point in order to prevent damage to battery, and you reach 0 mile border before you even get to 85kWh.

Several people have driven beyond 0, including the Broder doofus.

That's what I said: " you reach 0 mile border before you even get to 85kWh". 81kWh or somesuch is "0 mile left".

Do not forget Elon's comments about loosing cells without affecting user perceived capacity. There is probably extra to allow "mapping around" failed cells (a little like a hard disk mapping around bad sectors without a loss in capacity).
