Tesla Service Plan

From website it looks like service plan covers regular maintenance like wheel alignment and wiper blade change etc.
Each service is about $500 ($1900 for 4 years) which seems high for such basic maintenance. Does it cover anything else.

I want to find out if current owners are using (or even can use) non-Tesla service station for regular maintenance. How much does it cost for each visit to Tesla service station if one does not sign up for it.

With my current car have used non-dealer reputed service station since dealer is 2-3 times more expensive and so wondering same applies here too.

I would agree. Tesla should lower the rate along with the price of the car, the price of the air suspension, the pano roof, the tech package, leather seats, the 21 inch wheels and fog lights.

The annual maintenance is $600 and the warranty remains in effect even if you don't maintain your car, although there has been much spirited debate in this forum on how advisable that strategy is.

I am not sure it would be wise to take your $100K car in its second year of production to your local mechanic for anything beyond things like rotating tires and balancing wheels.

The "annual" plan also appears to include 6 month/6K mile tire service for rotation and balance.

+1 GDH I would expand that to include: make a stretch version with a bar and a big TV in back and give me two of them with full-time drivers for the price of a bus pass.

There have been endless discussions on this topic. This forum has no search function - so it is understandable that these same type of questions keep popping up.

If you do not live near a Tesla service center, the Service Plan with unlimited Ranger service is worth considering for $2400. I have had 3 Ranger visits in the past 9 months (for which I otherwise would have spent $100 each), and there was no additional charge for the Ranger fee. That included having them come down to take a leaking tire off, take it to a local tire shop for repair, and then return and reinstall. As it turned out, the tire could not be repaired, so I ended up buying a new 21" Conti, which they brought along just in case. I also paid for the tire store charges. But, the Ranger service was n/c. I figure, if I have a repair that needs Tesla to fix, it is nice to have the service call charges, trailering, etc prepaid.

I agree that the routine maintenance does not seem to be worth $600 per year, but in the scope of $100k car it is in the noise level. They seem very good about tending to service notices when they do have the car, such as replacing rear window clips, rear hatch trim, and rear wheel axle nuts, etc.

There is no way a non-Tesla service professional will be touching my P85. This is not an ICE vehicle and no mechanic knows how to even perform basic systems checks on this car. I spent $106,250 on my car and I can find the additional $475-$600/yr for annual maintenance in order to make sure my car is properly cared for, inspected, and issues addressed before they cause collateral damage that would not be covered under any Tesla warranty. While Tesla says you don't need to have annual maintenance done in order to maintain your warranty, if your lack of maintenance caused one of your tires to fly off, the resulting damage to your vehicle would most certainly not be covered under warranty.

If you are going to skip the annual maintenance or take the car to your own mechanic, please make sure you read the full text of Tesla's written warranty that came with your vehicle. You need to know the limitations and exclusions before making such a decision.

The service "packages" are a great deal.

I am planning of forgoing it. I can do wiper blade changes and tire rotation myself and I suspect it is no different to align than any other car. I don't see that you are getting much for the price, unless you live far from a service center. Then again, you can have a lot tires repaired in a year for 600$

@ jcaspar1 - What about the inspection of systems that are not visible, i.e., air suspension, AC compressor, battery and its subsystems, etc.? What about hardware system upgrades that you will never know about because you don't take it in for regular maintenance? How about a computer diagnostic that only Tesla can do - only they know if your car is throwing error codes and can see if a component is on its way to failing. Do you know if your front bumper reinforcing beam is rusting, as has happened to others? How about galvanic corrosion on some of the frunk beams that others have reported? When those parts are fixed and sent out for retrofit, you'll have no idea.

Of course I'm just thinking out loud, but I can imagine a number of scenarios where it's a great idea to have the annual service. Or at least do the service your first year, because that's probably the most critical timeframe if something isn't right.

I bit the bullet & signed up for 8 year plan (No ranger needed for me).

Supposedly, TSLA doesn't make money from the service, if that makes you feel any better.

I certainly think that $500-600 per year is a small amount to maintain a $100k car.

I'm with Amped Realtor! No way I'd let anyone touch the car. I was going to do the 8 year plan but honestly I think that I'll probably upgrade to whatever is available after 4 years. I usually buy a car and hang on to it for a long time but this technology will for sure improve and the battery, range, options, features will definitely improve drastically.

I will definitely keep the car 4 years though. So I'm DEFINITELY adding the service. As others mentioned, this is a $100,000+ car. It's worth the peace of mind.

Just bringing my Yaris in for service every 15k miles plus oil changes adds up to more than that. And I still have to buy and change my own wiper blades. I think buying the service plan @ $475/yr is a steal. I plan to get the 8 year plan.

Just out of curiosity, do you think you will keep your Model S all 8 years? I'm in a dilemma if I should buy the 8 years. I do think that it will have future value even if you trade it in the future and I'm 99.9% sure they will keep raising the price on these.

So maybe I'll go ahead and get it as well. Probably would drastically improve resale/trade in value if these annual services are $1,000 a year in a few years. LOL.

Good question - I don't know if the service plan is transferable to another owner if you sell the car to someone, though I suspect if you were trading/selling it for a new model Tesla they'd probably apply the remainder to your new vehicle.

I will need to ask someone at TM that question myself. I remain 90+% leaning towards the 8 year plan.

And to answer your question, I'm not sure if I'll keep the Model S for 8 years but I'm confident that if I don't, my new car will also be a Tesla.

The service plan is transferable to another buyer, if you ever sell your model S.

I should mention that TSLA will surely raise the price of these service plans in the coming years, to keep up with the inflation. They just increased the price of the car itself & the warranty cost, too... you know.

Those are good questions. From reading the boards, I suspect I will be brining it in several times a year for warranty issues and hope the updates will be done then. I guess I am still unclear on what it includes. It seems similar items to all you have mentioned are usually fixed under warranty . If it just includes alignment, wipers and rotation, it seems excessively priced.
I have always done the service on my ICE cars (1993 Chevy truck, 1997 Dodge Viper) and was planning on doing the same with the Tesla. I would do all the same service items they recommend which hopefully they come out with a list of at some point.

Yes, as sanjuro noted, they told me it's transferrable. I'm like you. Even if I don't keep this for all 8 years my next car is DEFINITELY another Tesla. Whatever the coolest flavor is then. But I can easily see this car satisfying me for the next 4 years and maybe even the next 8 years.

I think that seals the deal. I have 9 more days to decide so I think I will go with the 8 years of annual services. I think I will also go with the 4 year extension.

I'm driving a lot more than usual and I went to Los Angeles today and back to San Diego and honestly I enjoy driving now. I can easily see driving up to LA just for a nice lunch! LOL. So the extended coverage would be good as it would kick in as soon as my 50,000 mile coverage ended and start another 50,000 miles.

It was funny as on the way back there was about 8 CHP motorcycle cops driving in the HOV lane all together. I moved over so they could pass and they ALL were giving me the thumbs up on the car. It was hilarious as one instead of giving me a thumbs up just made the international gesture of "it's expensive" rubbing his fingers together. LOL.

This is ONE fun car to drive.

I financed my Model S through Tesla financing to get the Tesla buyback guarantee. Was told by my delivery specialist that it would be necessary to get the car serviced every year for the buyback guarantee to remain valid.

The service plan agreement document says that the 4 year plan includes 4 inspections which include the following:

• Vehicle inspection;
• Replacement or repair at the time of inspection of normal maintenance items and wear and tear
parts, excluding the Battery and tires;
• Wheel alignment*; and
• Tire rotation*

I'm not sure where shocks fit in this. Seems to me they would fit in the wear and tear category. I don't know why they aren't more specific.

Also included is a loaner car if you need it for the inspection. There is nothing in the plan that allows for 6 mo tire rotation.

This is the problem with language Tesla uses. On the website they talk about Roadside assistance like it is part of the service plan, yet it is part of the warranty. The service plan is very limited.

And they use the term service in their extend service agreement which is really a warranty extension.

All very confusing.

AmpedRealtor is right - Do Not let a a non-Tesla service station touch your car! How much knowledge or experience could they possibly have to service your Model S even if it is just for a wheel alignment.

GaryREM is also correct that Tesla verbage is a bit vague and misleading when it comes to what is covered as service warranty and what is covered as new car warranty.

Personally i think Tesla would gain more business by extending the current 30-day service warranty purchase to 90 days.

I have the $2400 ranger warranty and just had my P85 picked up for its annual service from my workplace. No luck on a Tesla loaner (I should have insisted and rescheduled) but not only did they go through a long list of service items, they decided to replace the inverter/motor on their own initiative! Believe me, there was nothing obviously wrong to a discerning driver. No way would I forgo the expertise and free service and parts the warranty provides. Blind faith is not a money bet. This is a prototype, not a Ford F-150.

How long after taking delivery do we have to purchase the extended service agreement?

Warranty is included in all cars, at least for the first 4 years. I think I will probably get an extended warranty for an additional 4 years, depending on how reliable it ends up being.
