40's Need a Fix

Lots of folks who've waited faithfully for a long time, and committed to an MVPA for a 40kWh car, and now are justifiably hurt to hear production is delayed again, while noob 85's get their cars quickly.

This gripe is legitimate - TM has made business decisions that have the effect of stringing along 40KW reservation holders. (Even if that wasn't the intent).

I think TM needs to mend fences with them. Here is my suggestion:

If you have a 40KW reservation and signed an MVPA, TM will refund your money on request, but grandfather in your option to purchase at the original price when the 40 starts production.

This would be a good faith gesture to credit supporters who've loaned them money. I think it would fix the problem and reaffirm folks' faith in the company's decency.

What do all of you think?

Your objections and whining are almost funny. It's less than 1 year since the first customer "rubber hit the road", and almost everything being done or achieved is for the first time (by this company, and, in large measure, by anyone). The implications that TM is a cynical money-grabbing and grubbing fraudulent outfit are petty nonsense. Or worse.

Brian, I consider your knee-jerk defense of Tesla, apparently under any and all circumstances, to be as pathetic and peculiar as the ex-nnt's continuous and wanton attacks on Tesla, and now consider you to be a worthless troll to be ignored.

Hi, I got the red "services sign-up" button too. However, I also noticed that my status changed from something like "The Tesla factory is building your Model S" to "Your order has been submitted to the Tesla Factory". On the surface that may not seem like progress but I have to believe that initial status was a default. A status everyone gets after signing the MVPA. With the recent change i have to believe something real is happening. Or maybe I am just too hopeful.

Late last night, the TM side was "Updating", after about 30 min, the status changed and also the new "Services Sign" button appeared. I called yesterday, and was told that the 40 is not in production, and still no EPA rating for the 40.

Just as a data point, I placed my order for a 60 last month and this week got an update over the phone(I called them) that it was submitted to the factory on March 1st and they are expecting it to come off the assembly line the first week of May. I had always thought when it gets submitted to the factory, that is when it starts production and I have heard it takes less then a week to build a car. Turns out there is a queue before it hits the factory and then another queue when it hits the factory.

Here is a recap of the 60 kWh schedule:
12/7/12 EPA range announced
12/30/12 first "Deliver" buttons appeared (23 days after EPA)
1/18/13 first actual deliveries of cars (42 days after EPA)

Assuming a similar schedule for the 40 kWh, if the EPA announcement was today, we would have "Deliver" buttons appear about 4/14 with first deliveries about 5/3.

If George's post stating "customer deliveries will begin at the end of April or the first half of May" is correct, then we should hear about EPA range very soon.

TM's position and achievements are far easier to justify than knee-jerk cynicism. The proof is in the unique success and survival of the company and the experiences of the vast majority of its customers.

My thoughts exactly. We’ll need the EPA very soon, so that the 40’s make the production timeline as TM as stated.

In George’s last blog post, he did not say anything about the 40’s, you would think that TM would know that the 40kWh batteries (which should be going into production in March), that something would have been said (unless it is not going to happen soon?).

EPA and crash ratings appeared to hold up the initial deliveries of all Model Ses last spring/summer. I think that approvals held up the HPWCs significantly too.

Maybe Tesla underestimated the impacts governmental approval times and/or the impacts of budget threats caused by our tit-for-tat US Legislature's posturing.

I think that this is a problem that couldn't be solved by "throwing money at it".

I alsoI had the status change to "you order submitted..." On my 40, anyone know what that means?

Yes, at first the new red button gave my heart an extra tick. Then I looked at the status and for a minute hoped the change had meaning. But then I read more carefully. The previous status of "factory is building" was not correct. The new status of "submitted to factory" seems more accurate after signing an MVPA. I think all this means is that the order has been submitted, and the build has not yet begun. Sadly, nothing new or better. I suspect the status could change again once "build" begins.
On a separate note, I think the website malfunctioned and displayed the 3G service with a cost of $30 per month. I had not seen a price published before.

Sean, I would think that Tesla is trying to be a little more accurate in their status descriptions, and that that is now the default status once an mvpa is signed.

Clearly, the previous description, something along the lines of "your car is now being built" was not accurate. I am guessing that your status will revert to that once the build of your car actually starts.

I am pretty sure that the change means absolutely nothing regarding the timing of the production of your car. Yeah, Georgevet I think you are just too hopeful.

I went on the factory tour today and ask many people about the 40 but no-one would say anything and I couldn't see anything.

If you haven't been on the tour, all the secret stuff is assembled up-stairs where the tour doesn't go (batteries, motor and driver).

No 40s til Summer....I just got this disappointing email directly from a Tesla Rep today. Aaargh:

Xerogas - that looks like a month later than George indicated.

Either they slipped a month, or there are some earlier reservations that will ship in May.

What is your res # / date?

If they start production of the 40kWh in June, that is 2 months later than the third delay of April 2013;

My res# is 10,050 and date was July 3, 2012

I'm sure there must be plenty of other 40's whose res# is way lower than mine -- anyone care to chime in with their reservation dates?

Xerogas - Sounds like you're square in the middle of the gaussian distribution of res dates.

The curious thing is the language your rep used. He didn't talk about when yours would be built, but instead referred to 40kWh production starting in June. I read that as all of them.

As Chuck says, that would be a further delay.

George last said that 40's would first get to customers by end of April. So I wrote that down as May.

Looks more like June now.

We'll have to get a larger data pool here, and see if the 40's under reservation number 5000 are hearing the same thing.

Fastest way to get a clear read is for a few res holders to send a one liner to ownership / rep:

"Do 40kWh cars deliver starting in June?'

I think April will be for the assembly of the batteries themselves. The cars come later, after battery production has been smoothed and debugged.

Mark K, I'm not sure that would give us a clear read. Reps consistently give inconsistent information. Note my post several up - my rep told me on Friday he had no idea.

A barrage of emails to George and Elon might, with an emphasis on "might", provide us with some meaningful info, though. At least their current plans, subject to obfuscation and, of course, change.

I haven't canceled my Model X reservation. Sorry to see you cancel your Model S 40kWh order. I know how frustrated you must feel after waiting so long. I don't agree with your "being taken advantage" assertion since I purchased my Model S relatively late compared to you. I didn't have any broken promises - just some unfulfilled promises, which are being addressed.

DavidSlagle: How many different threads are you going to copy and paste that paragraph to? Are you a short hoping to suppress sales numbers? Why try to talk others out of the car you have supposedly cancelled?

I have a 60 kWh model S. Best car I have ever owned.

I called yesterday. For what is worth, they told me April Build, May Delivery. Reservation# 3565, Air Suspension, 40kWh.

I received an update from Tesla today. I sent an e-mail this morning regarding lack of communication in respect to 40 kWh car production, and although not formal communication to the larger group (which was my request), a lady from Tesla called late this afternoon. We talked for quite a while about the confusion around 40 kWh production, EPA range rating timing, different answers to different reservation holders, etc. The end result is that they still seem to be on track per George's latest post (here on TM and here on TMC).

So, for now it still seems that late April or early May for first 40 kWh deliveries. She did say that the EPA-rating-to-delivery timeline will likely be more compressed than for the 60 kWh cars.

Just one more data point.

I got a stock reply from ownership@teslamotors.com today that essentially stated the same thing that Longhorn92 was told. The official stance is to point to George B's lastest post and state that that is all the information they have on the production of the 40's. Not much love from Tesla for the 40's...and not any clear information on the timing of production.
