Nokian studded tires

Hello all,

I am currently trying to decide which winter tires to buy for my upcoming S (I live in Montreal), and have narrowed it down to Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7s, either with or without studs.

I have never owned studded tires (or a RWD car, for that matter), and would be curious to hear from any S owners who bought the studded tire package from Tesla.

Impressions on dry / wet traction, snow / ice traction and noise would be greatly appreciated.

There is precious little information to be found on these tires online (I know they are good though), and even less with a powerful RWD electric car...

Thank you!

I doubt you will find more than a few remote roads that allow studs. Their day has passed.

Studded tires are allowed in Quebec during the winter months (october to may), hence my original question.

Even on major hwys like the 401? And then crossing the borders into US or Ontario or NB?

I had Nokian Hakka 1s about 13 years ago in Colorado. Slightly limited performance on wet roads compared with regular snow tires. Significant improvement on ice over regular snow tires. This was on a front wheel drive car, but going uphill you are actually better off with rear wheel drive (based on experience with VW, Porsche, and smart) if you have rear biased weight.

If you encounter black ice in significant quantities, studs are an advantage. I am making an assumption that the Hakka 7s perform similar to the Hakka 1s.

In Norway the majority of the cars ar equipped with studs during the winter months. On Ice the studs are clearly better. But on wet and dry roads they are inferior. Consider also that they make more noise on wet and dry roads compared to tires without studs. I will choose studs for my S, I encounter lots of icey roads during the winter months.
