Why only one camera?

I am a bit disappointed that the Model S will only have one camera. I find my current "360 degree" camera set-up option (http://www.bmw.com/com/en/newvehicles/5series/sedan/2010/showroom/safety...) incredibly useful. Are there plans to install more cameras on the Model S?

Yeah, some of those 360 camera systems are cool.

I think it's just a matter of practically bringing a new car to market. I'm sure they could have included this if they really wanted, but if you look at the list of every feature that at least one person wants that the Model S lacks (cooled seats, motorized folding mirrors, temperature controlled storage, etc etc), you'll find that it's a long list and it probably would not have made sense for Tesla to attempt to do everything.

In the end, they picked a good set of features and went with it.

I'm sure that Model S 3.0, 4.0, 5.0, etc will be way better than this 1.0 version.

Maybe be among the retrofit options that Elon talked about. Upgrades most in demand, which are also reasonably feasible.

Did he expressly mention retrofit?

Yes, I think so (for some things, obviously all unspecified).

Yeah, but I think retrofit would be for things like replacing the "okay" sunvisors with "the best sun visors in the world" and adding the rear reading lights which the car is already wired for.

Unless the car already designed for and is secretly wired with whatever's necessary to install things like blind spot monitors and a 360 camera system, I would not expect existing cars to be eligible for retrofits of such major features.

And I've been saying this over and over, but if you're the kind of person who is going to be dissappointed that people driving the Model S 2.0 in five years will have way cooler cars than what we're going to get, then you should not be putting your money down right now.

I'm not saying that it will definitely be that way, but this is a 1.0 tech product, so you should definitely be prepared for that possibility.

Solution: upgrade the entire car after five years.

I'm pretty sure we are only seeing the beginning of the electric cars here, kind of "horseless carriage". Future cars will be different in ways it is hard to even imagine. Think cross between Minority Report and Demolition Man and add some Blade Runner to spice it up.

@Olanmills - we know (from a TM source) that the wiring harness has connections for Park Distance Sensors. It might have other things as well.
